These Amendments amongst others provided for i) Constitutional status to all the Local Self-Governments in the Country, and ii) Independent State Election Commission in each State for timely conducting of elections in a free, fair and transparent manner. State Election Commission, Maharashtra which was established in 1994 returns more than 2,50,000 people’s representatives every 5 years in nearly28,000 LSGs (27 Municipal Corporations, 228 Municipal Councils, 130 Nagar Panchayats, 34 ZillaParishads, 351 Panchayat Samitis and 27781 Village Panchayats). With the advancement of economy, trend of urbanisation is increasing all over the Country. Maharashtra today is one of the most urbanised States with nearly 45% of its’ population staying in the Municipal Corporation, Municipal Council and / or Nagar Panchayat areas. While conducting elections during 2015-18, a need was felt to have information about various LSGs at one place on the lines of District Gazetteers published by the Government prior to Independence. This being a herculean task, it was decided after detailed consultation at various levels to initially collect basic statistical information about all the Municipal Corporations, ZillaParishads& Municipal Councils and publish the same as separate volumes. Gradual improvement could be made in those books later on. State Election Commission, Maharashtra keeping the above in mind, asked the Divisional Commissioner, Pune to prepare formats for collecting the required information after consulting various Municipal Commissioners and experts. I am happy to learn that the information has been provided by all the Municipal Commissioners in the finalised formats and the same has been compiled by the Divisional Commissioner, Pune with the help of all Divisional & Municipal Commissioners and the same is being published now. The information in this book primarily pertains to demographic details, composition of Local Body, city infrastructure, development plan and important features of city etc. I am sure this book would be extremely useful not only to the Election Managers but also to the planners of the urban local bodies besides researchers, students and stakeholders. This being the first attempt of its kind, it is possible that some discrepancies and / or errors might have crept in while publishing this Book. If it is so, the same may be brought to our notice so that they could be rectified in future. I take this opportunity to congratulate Mr. Deepak Mhaisekar, Divisional Commissioner, Pune, all the Divisional & Municipal Commissioners of the State and their staff for making this publication a reality. I wish this book all success. J.S.Saharia State Election Commissioner Maharashtra 5 Foreword We were pleasantly surprised when Hon’ble State Election Commissioner, Maharashtra, looking at the complexities of the ever increasing urbanisation in the State asked me to devise the formats and compile the basic information of the various Municipal Corporations at one place. I am happy to mention that the required information was readily provided by all the Municipal Corporations in the formats agreed to by all of us and the same has been collected &compiled in a short span of time with the help of the all Divisional Commissioners and Municipal Commissioners. I am further happy that this compilation of basic information of all the Municipal Corporations is being published by the State Election Commission for the information of the various stakeholders of democracy. I am sure this publication would be of extreme use not only during the elections but also for urban planning. I would like to thank all my colleague Divisional Commissioners & Municipal Commissioners and their staff for so painstakingly collecting and compiling this information in a short period of time. • Parasitosis in Wild Felids of India: an Overview
Journal of Threatened Taxa | www.threatenedtaxa.org | 26 August 2015 | 7(10): 7641–7648 Review Parasitosis in wild felids of India: an overview Aman Dev Moudgil 1, Lachhman Das Singla 2 & Pallavi 3 ISSN 0974-7907 (Online) 1,2 Department of Veterinary Parasitology, College of Veterinary Science, GADVASU, Ludhiana, Punjab 141004, India ISSN 0974-7893 (Print) 3 School of Public Health and Zoonoses, GADVASU, Ludhiana, Punjab 141004, India 1 [email protected], 2 [email protected] (corresponding author), 3 [email protected] OPEN ACCESS Abstract: Being a tropical country, India provides an ideal environment for the development of parasites as well as for vector populations resulting in a high degree of parasitism in animals and humans. But only a few detailed studies and sporadic case reports are available on the prevalence of parasites in captive wild animals, and the knowledge of parasites and parasitic diseases in wild animals is still in its infancy. The family felidae comprises the subfamily felinae and pantherinae, and within those are all large and small cats. Most of the available reports on parasites in felids describe helminthic infections, which caused morbidities and occasional mortalities in the infected animals. The parasites most frequently found include the nematodes Toxocara, Toxascaris, Baylisascaris, Strongyloides, Gnathostoma, Dirofilaria and Galonchus, the trematode Paragonimus and the cestodes Echinococcus and Taenia. Almost all the studies identified the parasitic stages by classical parasitological techniques and only a few new studies confirmed the species using molecular techniques. Amongst the protozoan parasitic infections reported in felids: babesiosis, trypanosomiasis and coccidiosis are most commonly found.

  • About Mumbai
About Mumbai Welcome to the city that never sleeps! Pulsating, Alive, On the Move, Vibrant, Fun -- this is Mumbai or as it is still frequently referred to -- Bombay. The most modern city in India, it captures the spirit of the changing pace set by liberalization and modernisation. Once a cluster of seven islands, Mumbai was presented to King Charles II in 1661 as part of the dowry when he married Princess Catherine de Braganza of Portugal. Over the years, as colonialism gave way to independence, Mumbai has transformed itself into an entity with thriving markets, business houses and many different communities reflecting a cosmopolitan and trendy atmosphere rarely seen elsewhere. On the surface, it represents the ever-changing face of today's India -- the old coupled with the dynamic new, and yet at its very core, the heart of the city is steeped in Indian customs and values. It is the capital of Maharashtra state, and its official language is Marathi although English and Hindi are widely spoken and understood. The fast-paced life has given rise to hordes of "fast- food outlets" on almost every road, offering lip-smacking choices of Mumbai's very own pau bhaji, bhel puri and kababs. There is no dearth, though, of multi-culinary delicacies dished out in posh restaurants by expert chefs. Mumbai is a shopper's delight with bargain buys, exclusive boutiques, ethnic markets and mini bazaars. This busy city is also the hub of a thriving cultural life, with a constant stream of performances in music, dance and drama. The seat of the Hindi film industry, known locally as Bollywood, it produces the largest number of films in the world.
