By Holger Terpi Norway is a rich complex country with a small wealthy militarist and nationalist upper class, a relatively large middle class and a working class. The little known Norwegian militarism has always been problematic. A country that could produce a composer of the stature of Edvard Grieg can also claim composers who have made a sig- nifi cant contribution to the repertoire for the organ. A vibrant school of new music fl ourishes in Norway, and the Oslo-based composer Kjell Mørk Karlsen has fash- ioned a diverse and notable body of work over the course of a distinguished career. Karlsen is a prolifi c artist whose output includes ten orchestral symphonies and eleven oratorios, along with numerous cantatas, concertos, and chamber music.
