Incarnation Anglican

Defying Gravity

June 20, 2021 Order of Service Fourt Sunday of Pentcost WELCOME

Our service follows a liturgical tradition handed down to us since the time of the Apostles. Please follow along, and participate by reading the portions in bold. Some people choose to follow the ancient Jewish tradition (see Ezekiel 9) of making a “cross” sign at certain portions of the . Those wishing to do so, may, at portions marked with a ☩ sign.

We have modified our liturgy today to include portions from the 2019 for the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). This includes prayers, confessions, and creeds from the past 2000 years of church history! For more information, visit: http://www.anglicanchurch.net/?/main/texts_for_common_prayer. It also includes all the scripture readings from the Revised Common , used by Anglicans, Reformed, Lutherans, and other Christian Traditions worldwide.

As Christians in the Anglican Tradition, we follow the Church Calendar in order to establish a life-rhythm whereby we regularly focus on various aspects of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Doing so helps us better understand how all these aspects of the Christian Narrative intersect with our everyday lives.

As Anglicans who observe the Church Calendar, we currently observe Time, which begins on Sunday and lasts until later November. During this season, we reflect upon the gift of the Holy Spirit, given to the church on the Day of Pentecost, as recorded in Acts 2. We believe that the miraculous work begun that day has continued through to the present day. reminds us of the intersection between our story, and that of the early church, and provides us with an opportunity to reflect on how God operates even in the midst of common, ordinary events.

Minister here reads comfortable words from scripture, then says: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, (+) confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. READING 2 Corinthians 6:1-13 English Standard Version

6:1 Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says,” In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 3 We put no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, 4 but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, 5 beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; 6 by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; 7 by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; 8 through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; 9 as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything. 11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians; our heart is wide open. 12 You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections. 13 In return (I speak as to children) widen your hearts also.

Mark 4:35-41 English Standard Version

35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

SPECIAL SONG Every week we utilize a special pop song to help us teach the message,The Apostle Paul utilized a similar method in Acts 17, 1 Corinthians 15:33, and Titus 1:12, where he quoted popular poets and philosophers to help communicate the gospel. “Gravity” And leave it all behind (behind) Christopher E. At the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD, this creed underwent further modification, in order to better communicate a Biblical understanding of the Trinity. It uses the word “catholic” to refer to the universal church, consisting of Christ followers throughout the ages, as opposed to a particular denomination. Together with the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed has helped establish the boundaries that define “Christian” and unify followers of Christ for almost 2000 years.

The following version of the Creed is used in the 2019 Book of Common Prayer. It is a newer English translation, that better reflects the language of the original Creed in Greek. The phrase “and the Son” †(Latin: filioque) is not in the original Greek text. The Coptic and Orthodox Traditions do not use it. Its recitation is now optional in ACNA Congregations.

Minister: Followers of Christ, what do you believe? Minister & People: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son],† who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead ☩, and the life of the world to come.

Amen. You may be seated

*”Catholic” means “universal” or “true”. It does not refer to a particular denomination or tradition. MINISTRY OF HOLY COMMUNION The second section of our service, The Ministry of The Holy Communion, focuses on the sacrifices and praise that we, and all the saints throughout history, have given to God in response to all He has done for us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Many of these words have been sung or recited by Christ followers around the world for over 1800 years!

OFFERING OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS

Christ followers support the church’s mission and ministry through offering a sacrificial portion of our resources–time, talents, possessions–as an act of faith and gratitude in response to God’s grace. This pattern presents itself to us throughout the scriptures. (See, for example, Deuteronomy 26; Proverbs 3: 8,9; Malachi 3:10) For many at Incarnation, it is easier to give online. OFFERTORY PRAYER

Minister & People: Through Christ may we continually offer to God the sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his Name. May we not neglect to do good and to share what we have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Amen. (-Based on Hebrews 13:15, 16) OFFERING SONG The Boat Ashore -Michael Roe, from The Boat Ashore (2010)

Woke up in the morning, and it felt like the black of night Tumbled out of bed Tripped on my Bible Stumbled over the light Blinded by the break of day, I shut my eyes I was alone Couldn't say my prayers Good God almighty, where's my telephone? And now I know Now I know Know what You meant when You told me You wanted to hold me Hold me (Take my hand and lead) Hold me forever (Walk this land with me) Hold me and never (I'll be there, don't leave) Tell me you'll ever (For forever) Let me go

No, no I did not know I did not understand the plan You had for me And it isn't that I don't believeI do believe that You truly love me Yeah, but how do I reciprocate when I know there's nothing good in me? Say it's so Say it so Say it 'til I really hear it when You say, "Don't fear it Let go"

Crash me Wash me on Your shore Drifted way too far from my moorings and more Overboard the oars went Relentless was the roll of the restless sea Set me free from its treacherous shoals

Now that I have run this boat ashore, don't let me go Now I know Now I know I know like never before You wait You waited for me, and I know Now I know

Please stand for singing of CLOSING PRAYER

Minister: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord; according to whose most true promise, the Holy Spirit came down from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all truth, giving them boldness and fervent zeal constantly to preach the Gospel to all nations; by which we have been brought out of darkness and error into the clear light and true knowledge of you, and of your Son Jesus Christ. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord, Hosannah!

Minister: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son Jesus Christ into the world for our salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the Cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” ☩

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” ☩
