Bin collection dates for 2014 From The Rectory Some people wonder what we are for—the church, I mean. Sometimes I wonder how we find it so difficult to explain what we are for. I suppose it is partly because we are different things to different people. But I do know that we ‘frail earthen vessels’ who make up the church do get in the way of showing what the church is for. That is because we are all human and in some way broken. All human life is here though... What do you think we are for? I would love to know – please ring or email. But we do have one thing in common and that is that we want to be better. We say we want:  To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom  To teach, baptise and nurture new believers  To respond to human need by loving service  To seek to transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and to pursue peace and reconciliation  To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth all as stated by the Anglican Communion in the 1980s and known as the Five Marks of God’s Mission. And what is this Kingdom? Is it a money-making exercise to keep ’s historic ecclesial treasures and for people who like that sort of thing, or does it have a meaning? The Kingdom to me is wherever there is justice, freedom and respect, security and resources, education and healthcare for all. Pie in the sky I heard it called last year in one of our villages and that may be so but it is our aim and our work. Progress is constantly being made. Look at what the churches do and enable in our communities and if you agree with these aims come and join in. But remember - if you are looking for excuses not to, you will certainly find them in us frail earthen vessels but they are presently trying—and trying especially hard during the traditional time of Lent when we ask ourselves how we live and whether we could do better. With all good wishes, Chris 01449 673280 [email protected]

Buxhall WI At our first meeting of 2014, members were War Horse captivated by our speaker, Amanda Richmond. In 2009 Amanda, along with several other colleagues The International Hit Play and six years of training behind her, set out on an expedition to climb Mount Everest. At 8,850 metres above sea level this was no mean feat. Based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel With Everest claiming the life of at least one climber per year, she spoke of the wonderful Sherpas who are responsible for the safety of each individual climber on a one to one basis. However, a large percentage of 2.30 pm Saturday 4 October 2014 climbers that meet their death on Everest are Sherpas, as this is such a very difficult and dangerous climb. The Sherpas are paid amply, at the providing them with a good lifestyle and high standard of living. The talk provided many humorous moments, Amanda enlightening us on New London Theatre the difficulties of bodily functions when undertaking such a task!!! Her photos delivered the beauty of the summits but also within the blink of an eye how the weather can turn and become extremely dangerous with Ticket price £38.50 plummeting temperatures able to freeze you solid. Amanda pointed out that the sun is dangerous for climbers because of the thawing effect Coach £11.50 causing avalanches and causing treacherous conditions underfoot. Leaving from Great Finborough With 500 letters being sent out requesting sponsorship, £10,000 was raised for The British Heart Foundation by Amanda’s climb. Great Finborough and District Garden Club What a winter—we should count ourselves fortunate that we live in the driest area of the country and even here the ground seems to have been saturated since forever! I suspect that even the most fortunate amongst us may find that some plants have rotted with the incessant wet even though the lack of any really cold weather is bringing on the bulbs and hellebores early. The start of the new gardening year meeting on 13 February was an illustrated talk given by Barry Gayton on the subject of wall plants and climbing shrubs. He reminded us of the variety of shrubs that, while usually grown freestanding, also make an impression when trained up against a wall. He also showed us that annual climbers are also an option to consider, particularly when a south facing wall is available, allowing the choice of some more tender species than would normally be the case. Extending the artistic aspects of gardening, the next meeting in the Pettiward Hall on Thursday 13 March at 7.30 pm will take us behind the scenes of the grand garden shows like Chelsea, when Simon White of Beale’s Roses gives us an insight into all the hard work that produces STOWMARKET SKIP HIRE the magnificent spectacle we see on show day. What’s been happening in and around the area… A window was damaged in a vacant property within the village between 18 and 19 January. No offender has been identified as of yet. Great Finborough and a number of other villages within Mid Suffolk have been subjected to dwelling burglaries and shed burglaries over the last month. Jewellery, power tools and garden equipment appear to be the prime target. Suffolk Police will always encourage marking your property to make it identifiable and ensuring homes and sheds have good strong security because it does discourage thieves. I know it’s another job that people haven’t the time to do but if I can urge you just to obviously mark those more valuable items and secure them away, it may make the difference. We have a number of crime prevention, low cost equipment that can be purchased from us for example, £10 for a shed alarm. There is a lot of good advice on the Suffolk Constabulary The Nutshell · Milton Road South · Stowmarket · IP14 1EZ website how to help you protect your home too. In recent days there has been a noted rise in Catalytic converter thefts in the villages of Haughley, Elmswell & Norton. Peugeot, Citroen, Mitsubishi & Ford Rangers are makes that have been targeted. Patrols from different departments within the constabulary are being dedicated night and day to catch those responsible for this and other recent crime trends. Tools with a Mission TWAM (Tools With A Mission) is a charity based in Ipswich sending tools of all types, haberdashery, sewing machines and school books to Christian-run charities in the third world, mostly Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. In many countries people have few skills, little education and no means of earning a living and a switch from aid dependency to self sufficiency is impossible without help. TWAM started 29 years ago and has since then provided this help by collecting and refurbishing tools and equipment no longer required in the UK and sending them overseas. We have volunteer collectors all over the UK who collect unwanted tools. These are in reasonable condition but no longer wanted by their owners. The tools are sorted according to the trade they will be used by and made up into tool kits according to a specified list. All completed kits are sent to Ipswich where they are stored until requested by one of our partners in the third world; tools are sent only in response to specific requests. When we have enough orders for one country everything is sent to a partner organisation who provides secure storage until the tools can be collected by the recipient partners. In the case of tradesman's Great Finborough and Buxhall Under 5’s toolkits they will be received by a training organisation who runs courses Easter Bunny Trail to train local people in a trade. These trades include carpentry, metal- with the special guest appearance of “Mr Gucci” work, vehicle mechanics, building, sewing and dressmaking, office work, and many others.
