Le sedute, gli assicura Giacometti, dureranno solo qualche giorno. Lusingato e incuriosito, Lord accetta. Non è solo l’inizio di un’amicizia insolita e toccante, ma anche – visto attraverso gli occhi di Lord – di un viaggio illuminante nella bellezza, la frustrazione, la profondità e, a volte, il vero e proprio caos del processo artistico. FINAL PORTRAIT è l’affascinante ritratto di un genio e la storia di un’amicizia tra due uomini profondamente diversi, eppure uniti da un atto creativo in costante evoluzione. Il film racconta anche le difficoltà del processo artistico – a tratti esaltante, a tratti esasperante e sconcertante – chiedendosi se il talento di un grande artista sia un dono o una maledizione. -

Press Release Berlinale 2017: Competition and Berlinale Special Are Complete – Master Directors, Newcomers, and Stars Galore The Competition and Berlinale Special of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival are now complete. 18 of the 24 films selected for Competition will be competing for the Golden and the Silver Bears. 22 of the films will have their world premieres at the festival. | 1 “BIG NIGHT”, QUANDO HOLLYWOOD PARLÒ PESCARESE di Piercesare Stagni* PESCARA – Nel 1996 la coppia di attori e registi americani formata da Stanley Tucci e da Campbell Scott sorprendeva l’ambiente del cinema indipendente americano con Big night, una sorprendente e originale commedia brillante incentrata sui sacrifici e sui sogni di alcuni italiani emigrati negli Usa. Ancora oggi il film è considerato tra le migliori commedie di ambito culinario mai realizzate, con un ritmo sorprendente, una regia attenta e controllata e l’incredibile prova dei due protagonisti, con un continuo e complesso alternarsi di registri comici e drammatici. Dei due registi soprattutto l’italo americano Stanley Tucci risultava coinvolto nel film a più livelli, come attore protagonista, sceneggiatore assieme al cugino Joseph Tropiano e www.virtuquotidiane.it | 2 avendo inoltre coinvolto nella lavorazione anche la sorella, Christine, come attrice e la madre nella preparazione dei numerosi e succulenti piatti. Anche Campbell Scott, noto per Il tè nel deserto di Bertolucci, è presente nel film nella duplice veste di regista e attore, ma in un ruolo minore: tra gli attori svetta poi la prova di Ian Holm, grande interprete britannico. Dietro la perfetta ricostruzione storica dell’atmosfera di un tipico ristorante italiano anni ‘50 è presente fortemente nel film, con un tono dolce-amaro, una riflessione sull’allora assai probabile fallimento del sogno americano per molti emigranti nostri compaesani: molto argutamente l’opera mette in evidenza le profonde differenze culturali e sociali che esistevano tra gli agiati americani e gli italiani che con ostentata cocciutaggine insistevano nel voler proporre le loro tradizioni importate, in questo caso culinarie, integralmente e senza mediazioni con chi li ospita. -

His American friend, the convivial and impeccably turned out 40-something James Lord (Armie Hammer) comes to find him. Giacometti muses that Lord has never posed for him. Although Lord says he has to leave for New York in a couple of days, Giacometti reassures him that it will be quick so Lord agrees to sit for a portrait. Lord arrives at Giacometti’s ramshackle studio with its adjoining bedroom and rickety staircase, all leading off a cluttered courtyard. Annette Arm (Sylvie Testud), Giacometti’s tired looking though much younger wife greets Lord warmly. Giacometti works on a sculpture but laments to his brother and right hand man, Diego (Tony Shalhoub) that the piece is a miserable failure. Giacometti starts work on the portrait but tells Lord that he will never be able to paint him as he sees him. He also issues the ominous warning that it is impossible to finish a portrait. Lord reminds him that he has a flight to catch, but the artist reassures him. Caroline (Clémence Poésy), a prostitute who is Giacometti’s lover, muse and model arrives and Lord smiles as the pair kiss and giggle. -

(/) Film Review: Final Portrait Alberto Giacometti paints a portrait of his friend James Lord in this sterile exercise that fails to gain dramatic traction from the artist's quest for perfection. This film asks the viewer literally to watch paint dry as renowned artist Alberto Giacometti (Geoffrey Rush) paints, wipes out, cusses, and re- paints a portrait during some 18 sittings by his friend, the dapper James Lord (Armie Hammer). It's as exciting as watching a writer write. Writer-director Stanley Tucci, the esteemed actor and Academy Award nominee, attempts to compensate for Portrait's schematic premise by sketching in la vie boheme in the artist's Paris atelier, which could be situated in some Montparnasse of tourist fantasy. But the film never gains amplitude, keeping claustrophobically focused on Giacometti's maddening struggle to complete the portrait. You can lecture, write books and perhaps make a short doc about the artistic process, but, at least in the case of Final Portrait, you can't pistol-whip it into a dramatic feature film. In 1964, while on a brief trip to Paris, Lord, a wealthy art writer and a kind of American flaneur, is asked by Giacometti to sit for a portrait. The process, Giacometti assures Lord, will take only a few days. Flattered and intrigued, Lord agrees. "A few days" expands into weeks, possibly months of sittings that point to no conclusion because Giacometti, who can never find satisfaction with the work—or even understand the nature of "finished"—continually destroys it.
