Chapter 2 China’s cars and parts: development of an industry and strategic focus on Europe Peter Pawlicki and Siqi Luo 1. Introduction Initially, Chinese investments – across all industries in Europe – especially acquisitions of European companies were discussed in a relatively negative way. Politicians, trade unionists and workers, as well as industry representatives feared the sell-off and the subsequent rapid drainage of industrial capabilities – both manufacturing and R&D expertise – and with this a loss of jobs. However, with time, coverage of Chinese investments has changed due to good experiences with the new investors, as well as the sheer number of investments. Europe saw the first major wave of Chinese investments right after the financial crisis in 2008–2009 driven by the low share prices of European companies and general economic decline. However, Chinese investments worldwide as well as in Europe have not declined since, but have been growing and their strategic character strengthening. Chinese investors acquiring European companies are neither new nor exceptional anymore and acquired companies have already gained some experience with Chinese investors. The European automotive industry remains one of the most important investment targets for Chinese companies. As in Europe the automotive industry in China is one of the major pillars of its industry and its recent industrial upgrading dynamics. Many of China’s central industrial policy strategies – Sino-foreign joint ventures and trading market for technologies – have been established with the aim of developing an indigenous car industry with Chinese car OEMs. These instruments have also been transferred to other industries, such as telecommunications equipment. -

Consequently, the two companies - or more - have the desire to collaborate in order to share their skills, knowledge. In this guide we are going to explain you why companies use joint venture. You will see that this entry mode is used outside of simple skill sharing. It exists three types of joint venture : - The horizontal joint venture : This joint venture regroup companies who has a same activities and similar sector of activity - The vertical joint venture : It’s cooperation between two companies who have a same sector of activities, but who haven’t the same job ( a producteur of partition with recording studio) - The conglomerate joint venture : There isn’t a relation face to a sector between the partner ( a label and provider of internet ) Why companies use Joint Venture ? ● Opportunity to leverage the distinct strengths of both partner organisations ● Cuts investment or funding costs versus developing commercial opportunities in house ● Partner skill set should be complementary, making the value of the JV greater than the sum of its parts, as well as ● providing quick and low cost access to expertise in an area where you are weak ● Reduces downside risk should partnership not deliver the expected/ hoped for returns ● Increased power over the activities and principles guiding the JV's operations and objectives compared to a ● minority interest investment ● Allows a deal to be done when funding might otherwise preclude it, since you can contribute things other than ● cash, such as assets, IP or know-how Some examples : We are going to illustre why companies use joint venture thanks to some concrete examples. -

The Renault-Nissan Alliance 014 The Renault-Nissan Alliance Nissan has greatly increased its global footprint and achieved dramatic economies of scale through the Renault-Nissan Alliance, a unique and highly scalable strategic partnership founded in 1999. In 2011, 8.03 million cars* were sold by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, amounting to a 10.7% global share. The phenomenon of these autonomous Chinese Automakers is drawing increasing attention not only from academia but also from business and government circles. This paper attempts to clarify the relationship between emergence of ICAMs and International Technology Transfer. Many scholars indicate the use of outside supplies (of engines and other key-parts), as a sole reason for high-speed growth of ICAMs. However, the internal approach, at a level of how companies act, is also necessary to outline all the reasons and factors that might contribute to the process. This paper, based on organizational view, starts from historical perspective and clarifies the internal dynamics of the ICAMs. -

Changes in the Division of Labor in China Until the 1970s, China’s industries had followed a system which can be called a vertically divided division of labor. Under this system each enterprise within an industry generally specialized in producing a particular end product within a spe- cific narrow field, and each enterprise subsumed within itself all of the stages in the production process. In the machinery industry, for example, a firm manufacturing a particular machine would carry out the final assembly process as well as the upstream machining, casting, forging, and heat-treating processes. Figure 1 illus- trates the concept of the vertically divided division of labor as was found in the automobile manufacturing industry. An enterprise subsumed within itself all of those upstream-production stages encompassed by the solid line, but very often the firm produced only one particular end product. This division-of-labor system derives partly from the preconditions in China at the time the country began industrialization. The country’s preexisting industrial base was extremely weak, and there was little hope of procuring parts and compo- nents externally. In addition, the vertically divided division of labor reduced the uncertainties inherent in transactions among enterprises because only a small num- ber of enterprises became involved in the production process from the raw-materi- als stage to the final-assembly stage. As a result the system was seen as more suit- able for a planned economy. -
