La Leona Eco Lodge . Saladero Eco Lodge . Hacienda Baru/Damas Island/Damas Caves Some notes . Lodges were booked online beforehand, either directly on the lodge website or through Booking.com. These were all booked separately except for Danta/La Leona/Saladero which was a three lodge package for which we were collected at Puerto Jimenez and returned there afterward. We hired a car from Alamo for the first route ending at Puerto Jimenez, and then again a week later after returning from Danta/La Leona/Saladero for the second route. Alamo is the only big name car rental company in Puerto Jimenez as far as I know. We (my wife and I) landed at the San Jose airport around lunch time. After drawing colones from one of the ATMs which would be useful for certain purchases, we then bought a SIM card with the intention of using the Waze navigation app. Unfortunately the network was down so the card would only be activated the next day. We therefore took the GPS option on the hire car, but this worked well enough. A shuttle was available to take us from the Alamo booth at the San Jose airport to their offices a few kilometres away. This was a pleasant surprise because we did not know about this service and had planned to do so by taxi. Our experience with Alamo was quite satisfactory overall although both the cars we used were far from new (not serious) and it now appears to me that we may have been charged a collection fee that was never discussed with us (serious). -

How Do We Identify Micronycteris (Schizonycetris) Sanborni Simmons, 1996 (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) Reliably and Where We Can Find This Species in Brazil?

ANDERSON FEIJÓ1,3 PATRÍCIO ADRIANO DA ROCHA1,2 STEPHEN F. FERRARI1,2 ABSTRACT Micronycteris is divided into four subgenera, Micronycteris, Leuconycteris, Xenoctenes, and Schizonycteris. The latter includes Micronycteris (Schizonycteris) minuta, Micronyc- teris (S.) schmidtorum, Micronycteris (S.) sanborni and Micronycteris (S.) yatesi. Little is known of the biology of M. (S.) sanborni, which is widely distributed in the dry forests of South America, but is known from only few sites. The scarcity of records of M. sanborni appears to be at least partly related to the difficulty of differentiating this species from the other members of the subgenus Schizonycteris. The present study identifies the key traits that distinguish this species from other Schizonycteris, reviews the geographic distribution of the species, and presents some notes on breeding patterns. Six new localities are presented for M. sanborni, and are analyzed together with those available in the literature, providing new insights into ecological and zoogeographic patterns. A number of the diagnostic features established by Simmons (1996) in the description of M. sanborni proved to have little taxo‑ nomic value, especially for the differentiation of M. minuta and M. yatesi, which it closely resembles. The primary external difference is the pure white color of the ventral pelage and the proportion of the white base (2/3‑4/5) of the dorsal hair in M. sanborni, in contrast with dirty white or pale gray and a much shorter white base of the dorsal hair in the other species. -

Diversity of Bat Species across Dominica Brittany Moore, Hannah Rice, Meredith Stroud Texas A&M University Tropical Field Biology Dominica 2015 Dr. Thomas Lacher Dr. Jim Woolley Abstract: Twelve species of bats can be found on the island of Dominica, however there are still some species that have not been thoroughly catalogued. Our report is based on further findings regarding Artibeus jamaicensis, Sturnira lilium, Ardops nichollsi, Myotis dominicensis, Monophyllus plethodon and Brachyphylla cavernarum. We collected mass, forearm length, hind foot length, ear length, sex, and reproductive condition for every individual bat and then compared this information among species to observe morphological differences. We also added new data to past studies on wing loading and aspect ratios for the species we caught. We found a statistical significance among species in body size measure and wing morphology. Among the bats examined, the measurements can be used in order to positively identify species. Introduction: Dominica, also known as the Nature Island, is home to a great diversity of plants and animals. There are many various habitats ranging from dry forest to montane and elfin rainforest. Within each habitat, one may find species only endemic to that area. Animal activity at night in Dominica is quite different than what can be witnessed during the day. As nighttime falls, the call of the tink frog can be heard all over the island, and the mating click beetles will illuminate even the darkest of forests, but by far the most exciting nocturnal animals are the thousands of bats that come alive when the sun begins to set. -

BA KER AB STRACT In the past decade, seven new species and one new genus have been described in the Lonchophyllinae (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae), increasing the number of recognized taxa in the subfamily to four genera and 18 species. During this time, three studies, both morphologic and genetic, indicated the genus Lonchophylla was paraphyletic with respect to other genera in the subfamily. Using tissues from museum voucher specimens, including the holotypes of specimens of Xeronycteris vieirai and Lonchophylla pattoni, issues related to the previous paraphyletic assemblages were addressed. A combination of mitochondrial (Cytb), nuclear data (Fgb-I7, TSHB-I2), chromosome diploid and fundamental numbers, and morphologic characters was used to determine whether all species of Lonchophylla share a common ances- tor after diverging from other genera in the subfamily. Based on gene sequence data, a basal, monophyletic, statistically supported radiation within the subfamily Lonchophyllinae was observed in all phylogenetic analyses. -

[email protected] Ecosystem services are the benefits obtained from the environment that increase human well-being. Economic valuation is conducted by measuring the human welfare gains or losses that result from changes in the provision of ecosystem services. Bats have long been postulated to play important roles in arthropod suppression, seed dispersal, and pollination; however, only recently have these ecosystem services begun to be thoroughly evaluated. Here, we review the available literature on the ecological and economic impact of ecosystem services provided by bats. We describe dietary preferences, foraging behaviors, adaptations, and phylogenetic histories of insectivorous, frugivorous, and nectarivorous bats worldwide in the context of their respective ecosystem services. For each trophic ensemble, we discuss the consequences of these ecological interactions on both natural and agricultural systems. Throughout this review, we highlight the research needed to fully determine the ecosystem services in question. Finally, we provide a comprehensive overview of economic valuation of ecosystem services.
