What’s the Buzz on Electric Vehicles?! Students will get to inspect and actively engage with the various components and mechanisms of an electric basic utility vehicle (frame, suspension, motor, transmission, steering, brakes, etc.). Students will also learn how to work with Unistrut to build frames and scaffolds for a variety of applications. Instructor: Warren Vaz, Assistant Professor of Engineering Water Beneath Our Feet Where does our water come from? How does it move? And what happens if it is polluted? Learn all about groundwater and how we use it with Dr. Beth Johnson. Students will test sediments to see which will hold the most water and compete against other students to see which one water will flow through the fastest. Then, students will watch as simulated water pollution moves through the ground and learn how it can affect drinking water in Wisconsin. Instructor: Beth Johnson, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Geography-Geology Genes in a Bottle

Come capture your genetic essence in a bottle! In this session, you will extract genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from your cheek cells and watch it precipitate from solution as floating white strands. Your very own DNA will be collected and transferred to a helix-shaped necklace that you can take home. Instructors: Caroline , Professor of Chemistry, UWO Fox Cities and Kim Schatz, Professor of Chemistry, UWO Fox Cities

Come Fly with Us!

Have you ever wondered how airplanes fly? In this session, you will learn the amazing basics of aerodynamics and how airplanes fly. You will build and fly a wood model airplane. Students will learn basic aerodynamic principles, and how teamwork and problem solving are important to engineers to in the aerospace industry. Come fly with us! Instructors: Carrie Forster, Lifetime EAA Member, President EAA Chapter 252 and Member of WAI (Women in Aviation, International) and 99s; and John Forster, Lifetime EAA Member and EAA Chapter Young Eagle Co-Coordinator

Luck and Logic in Games and Puzzles!

Explore math concepts by playing games and solving puzzles! In this session, we’ll investigate how probability and logic are involved in board, dice, and brain games. Learn a few tricks to improve your odds of winning, or take what you discover to build a game on your own. Taking your new skills home to impress and outsmart your family is just an added bonus! Instructors: Carrie Tirel, Associate Professor of Mathematics at UWO Fox Cities Campus and Jamie Douglas, Associate Professor of Engineering at UWO Fox Cities Campus

Fancy Feet!

You love shoes– now learn how to design them! You will use the engineering design process to solve a real fun, real-world problem—shoe engineering! Working in small teams, design, build and test a pair of wearable platform or high-heeled shoes, taking into consideration the stress and strain forces that it will encounter from the shoe wearer. We will finish up with a "walk-off" to test the shoe designs and discuss the design process. Students need to be safety minded to participate. Instructor: Betty Leonhard, Quality Engineer, Deluxe Plastics

Crocodiles and Mosquitoes and Wolves, Oh My!

What do these creatures have in common? How are crocodiles critical to wood stork survival? What does Lyme disease have to do with the extinction of the passenger pigeon? Should we eradicate all mosquitoes? How might wolves change rivers? Answer these questions and more in this session as we assemble a web of life and teach each other about the roles each species plays. We will discuss why biodiversity is important, the threats to biodiversity, and strategies to coexist with all creatures, great and small. Instructor: Shannon Davis-Foust, Senior Lecturer of Environmental Studies, UW Oshkosh

The Story in the Bones: Forensic Anthropology

Forensic Anthropologists study bones and human remains found at crime scenes, and help solve mysteries about the cause of death and the identity of the dead. You will examine real and model skeletons and discover the life story told by human remains. Become a bones detective for a day! Instructor: Terri Gonya, Ph.D., Professor of Biology, UWO Fox Cities Campus

Engineering Adventures for Middle School Students Sponsored by UW-Platteville Engineering Partnerships Program UWO-Fox Cities, Saturday, October 19th, 2019

"When done right, education should feel like an adventure." -A.R.M.

On Saturday, October 19th, right after the UWO-Fox Cities GEMS event for middle school students, a series of engineering adventures awaits. Each adventure is specifically designed for a group of middle school students to solve. Will you be able to save the spaceman launched from the cannon when disaster strikes? Will your robot escape the hunt in a robotic game of freeze tag? Will your team be able to solve the (somewhat devious) puzzles that await them?

But your team won't be facing any of these adventures alone. UW-Platteville has assembled a team of talented engineers and professors from across the state who will be there to guide their groups to safety while also teaching students a little bit about real-world engineering.

12:00pm-12:30pm Registration and Lunch (adventurers need to be well fueled for what's ahead) 12:30pm-1:30pm The First Set of Adventures… (the journey begins) 1:30pm-2:00pm Cookies and Swag with Industry (no one should leave without free stuff) 2:00pm-3:00pm The Second Set of Adventures… (the adventure continues)

Come join us for the first voyage of UW-Platteville's Engineering Adventures for Middle School Students, hosted right in the Fox Cities! Registration is FREE!

Maplewood Middle School Menasha Joint School District 1600 Midway Road Menasha, WI 54952

Dear Maplewood Families,

We want your child to be successful in school, and that means going beyond the basics. Excelling in academic classes is important, but students also need to know how to learn, make good decisions, handle strong emotions, and get along with others.

This year, we'll begin the Second Step Middle School Program, which focuses on skills and concepts that are designed to help students both in and out of school. These include:

Mindsets and Goals: Students learn about ways to grow their brains and get smarter, along with research-based strategies for achieving goals and handling difficult situations.

Values and Friendships: Students learn to identify their personal values and use those values to make good decisions and build strong, positive relationships.

Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn the positive role emotions play in their , how to handle unhelpful thoughts and strong emotions, and specific strategies for calming down.

Serious Peer Conflicts: Students learn how to identify and avoid serious conflicts, resolve conflicts that can't be avoided, think about other people's perspectives, and help stop bullying and harassment at school.

If you have any questions about the Second Step Middle School Program, please do not hesitate to contact the School Counselors for more information. Thank you for supporting your child in learning the skills and concepts that lead to success in school and in life.

Sincerely,

Erica Schmatz & Cymone Cowling
