34 AFTERNOON CEREMONY

Saturday, November 12, 2:00 p.m.

35 HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

Thomas R. Louttit

Thomas R. Louttit will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 2 p.m. ceremony on Saturday, November 12, “in recognition of his wise leadership and gracious service to the community as an Elder and the inspiration he offers those he mentors and those privileged to witness his actions which constitute an honourable model of personal reconciliation and education.” From 1953 to 1963, Mr. Louttit attended residential schools in Ontario and Quebec. In 1963, he was placed in the care of the Children’s Aid Society. As an adult, he moved to Toronto where he became a flat roofer, a career that would last 32 years. In 1994, he graduated from the Ontario Native Counsellors Program. He is a traditional Sweat Lodge Keeper and the Keeper of the Traditional Pipe. Mr. Louttit is a respected Elder in the Ottawa community. The community relies on him for traditional teachings, counselling, spiritual guidance, traditional ceremonies, and land-based education and culture programs. Mr. Louttit regularly speaks to schools and community groups about his experiences within the residential school system and his personal healing journey. In 2014, the Aboriginal Veterans of Canada presented him with the Queen's Jubilee Metal. He is the father of Erica and Thomas Wilson (deceased), a grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of two girls. He currently lives in Ottawa with his wife Pennie.

Louttit Conferring of Degrees and Awarding of Medals Warrant Katharine Kelly, B.A., M.A., Ph.D. Marshal of Convocation Welcome from the Alumni Association Chancellor Charles Chi Closing Address by the President and Vice-Chancellor Roseann O’Reilly Runte, C.M., B.A., M.A., Ph.D. Recessional Music * Our honorary degree recipient, Thomas R. Louttit, will be presented with a Star Blanket to honour his accomplishments and to say kitchi-mìgwech (a big thank you) for supporting the Carleton community and beyond. The blanket is placed on an individual’s shoulders, and is symbolic of wrapping the person physically and spiritually in respect and admiration. Star Blankets are used at a time of life-changing events such as births, deaths, graduations and marriages. The star on the blanket represents the Morning Star, a symbol of a new beginning and shining leadership. For many Indigenous peoples in Canada, stars are used as teachings and blessings; they symbolize light (knowledge) and darkness (ignorance). For Indigenous students attending Carleton and all Indigenous students pursuing their education, the Morning Star shines light for Indigenous peoples, communities and nations, and signifies that hope for their future is bright. The gifting of the Star Blanket will be followed by an Honour Song for Thomas R. Louttit. An Honour Song is sung to honour a particular person or persons who have done something noteworthy. While all Honour Songs have a similar purpose, each song is unique to honour the person or persons.
