This paper is an account of Dr Eric Mjöberg’s travels in the northeast Queensland rainforest region, where he went, what observations he made, and what types of Aboriginal material culture items he collected and returned with to Sweden in 1914. Mjöberg, a Swedish entomologist commissioned by the Swedish government to document rainforest fauna and flora, spent seven months in the tropical rainforest region of far north Queensland in 1913, mainly exploring areas around the Atherton Tablelands. -

Box 826, Lismore, New South Wales Australia, 2480 Introduction As a prelude to further work on the Chelidae of Australia, the following considerations relate to the Elseya dentata species complex. See also Wells and Wellington (1984, 1985) and Wells (2002 a, b; 2007 a, b.). Elseya Gray, 1867 1867 Elseya Gray, Ann. Mag. Natur. Hist., (3) 20: 44. – Subsequently designated type species (Lindholm 1929): Elseya dentata (Gray, 1863). Note: The genus Elseya is herein considered to comprise only those species with a very wide mandibular symphysis and a distinct median alveolar ridge on the upper jaw. All members of the latisternum complex lack a distinct median alveolar ridge on the upper jaw and so are removed from the genus Elseya (see Wells, 2007b). Bush Tucker of the Wet Tropics The Ma:Mu Rainforest Aboriginal people’s traditional lands are around Innisfail, Palmerston and Millaa Millaa areas. The area’s volcanic soils and high rainfall have produced some of the most diverse tropical rainforest in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. These forests traditionally provided a rich source of food, particularly in wetter months when animals were difficult to hunt. Even today when the easy option is to shop in a supermarket, Ma:Mu people gather and prepare these foods because it is still part of their culture and they enjoy eating their traditional foods. Bush tucker has also become big business. Restaurants are serving entire menus based on Australian native foods and it is now possible to buy rainforest fruit foods in supermarkets. Ma:Mu horticultural trainees at Innisfail TAFE are collecting wild rainforest fruits and domesticating them to produce commercially viable fruits for farmers to harvest and sell. Some of these plants are shown here. A wide range of animals including possums, tree-kangaroos and many birds including the endangered cassowary dine on these fruits. If you plant them on your property you will probably attract wildlife to your backyard. BEWARE! There are many poisonous plants in the rainforest. Rainforest Aboriginal Elders are very concerned that adventurous naturalists may sample some bush tucker and poison themselves. It is unwise to sample bush tucker unless you are absolutely certain what you’re eating. Johnstone River Innisfail – Queensland Government Will Not Take Real Action to Protect the GBRWHA

The Johnstone River is a high-energy high- volume river in the Wet Tropics of North Queensland, annual rainfall around five metres; most of which falls in the wet season. The river banks are intact (no erosion) and there is no polluted or sedimented ‘run-off’ because the river banks and nearby land is densely vegetated. The waters running into the GBRWHA are clean and clear. Goondi Wharf today. The bank has receded around it. Riverside land all cleared. THE JOHNSTONE RIVER RUNS RED EVERY TIME IT RAINS. 1. Runoff (horticulture and agriculture) 2. Bank erosion. State and Council hide behind complex jurisdictional and tenure matters. Finding out who has jurisdiction and responsibility for riparian land has proved difficult. Yvonne Cunnningham has lived alongside the Johnstone River for forty- two years, where she manages her plant nursery. Here is her story (from an article published with photos in ECOTONE Magazine): I have noticed that the River needs less and less rainfall to cause the river to run red. At the mouth of the Johnstone River the mangrove forest has died, thought to be due to chemical sediments carried by the river, including herbicides. The Australian Institute of Marine Science has reported the Great Barrier Reef has lost half its coral cover over the past 27 years. -

Milne Edwards, 1837 (Atyidae) and congeners from potential source populations throughout the Indo-West Pacific region. Numerous Australian taxa have close evolutionary relationships with non-Australian taxa from locations throughout the region, indicating a diverse origin of the Australian freshwater fauna. This implies many colonisations to or from Aus- tralia over a long period, and thus highlights the surprising adeptness of freshwater shrimp in dispersal across ocean barriers and the unity of much of the region’s freshwater biota. Interestingly, a study on Australia’s other main genus of atyid shrimp, Paratya Miers, 1882, inferred only a single colonisation. A number of potential species radiations within Australia were also identified. This agrees with patterns detected for a large number of Australian freshwater taxa, and so implies a vicariant explanation due to the development of colder, dryer climates during the late Miocene/early Pliocene.
