CCA1103: Creativity: Theory, Practice and History Creative Project: Project Proposal Dillon Shaikh Overview Perth Glory FC has devised a competition to design their official third kit for use in the 2014/15 Hyundai A-League season. This competition is designed as a way of involving Perth’s football community into producing an Australian/West-Australian themed third kit which will be worn by the Perth Glory players on the Australia Day long weekend game against Melbourne Victory at nib Stadium on January 25th, 2015 (“Design Our Australia Day Kit!,” 2014, August 28.). Perth Glory has stated that they want a kit that symbolises the “pride of Australia’s football public” (“Design Our Australia Day Kit!,” 2014, August 28.). The game that takes place on the Australia Day long-weekend is known as the “Peoples Game” and is an event that celebrates the people who have made football great in Western Australia (“Design Our Australia Day Kit!,” 2014, August 28.). The event will largely acknowledge the importance and contribution of the fans, and those associated within the WA football community (“Design Our Australia Day Kit!,” 2014, August 28.). The winning design will be showcased to hundreds of thousands of television viewer’s via Foxtel, be placed on the cover of the Matchday magazine, and the competition winner will also have the chance to be on the pitch moments before kick-off (“Design Our Australia Day Kit!,” 2014, August 28.). As well as designing this third kit for the Perth Glory competition, my project is going to be a third kit design for all 10 teams in the Hyundai A-League (“A-League,” n.d.). My designs will be themed according to their state and/or local area. The end product at the conclusion of my Creative Project will be 10 full kit designs. Target Audience The design of the kit should aim to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, although smaller audiences have been identified as to who the design should be aimed at. First off, the design of the kit needs to appeal to the football community, which may include not just football fans, but the people associated with Perth Glory FC, as they will be the ones who choose the winning design. The majority of football fans who attend Perth Glory games are male, and those most interested in football are also male. The player’s themselves are also male, as well as the coach and the majority of the staff at games (these were made from observations I conducted at games), and so it is fair to say that the target audience is primarily male. The age bracket of these fans can vary, but those most passionate about football range from ages 13+, so youth, teenagers, young adults and also elderly men who enjoy football will be my target audience for the project. These designs must also appeal to women however, so small changes may be made to ensure the final design appeals to both male and female fans, but primarily male. Dillon Shaikh CCA1103: Creativity: Theory, Practice and History 1 Design & Requirements The requirements set for the design of the third kit are straightforward. Perth Glory wants a design that must contain an Australian or West Australian theme (“Design Our Australia Day Kit!,” 2014, August 28.). The rest of the design is entirely up to the designer, although keeping to the theme would produce a design more likely to be selected for the “People’s Game”. The design should incorporate the full kit: jersey top, shorts and socks. The A-League and club logos and sponsors are also required to be included on the kit (“Design Our Australia Day Kit!,” 2014, August 28.). An effective colour combination for Perth Glory could be something that incorporates a West-Australian theme (e.g. yellow+black). The design could also feature some sort of West- Australian identity, such as the Black Swan (which represents the state of WA). Since there are 4 teams based in the state of New South Wales, and 2 teams based in Victoria, a state theme for each club will have to either vary or incorporate more local elements into the design. For example, Central Coast Mariners (who are based ins NSW) could have a design associated with the ocean as they are based right next to the ocean and their Central Coast Stadium overlooks the water (see image to right) (“Central Coast Mariners FC,” n.d.) (“Central Coast Mariners FC,” n.d.). Some great example designs from last years Perth Glory “People’s Game” competition are shown below (Imach, 2013). This kit along with the other 9 kits I aim to complete have to be submitted as part of my Creative Project by Friday, October 31st. This will give me a month and a half to design these 9 kits, which should be an adequate amount of time to complete them. The first step I undertake when creating a design is identifying what it is I am designing and the target audience (see page 1). Next, I will develop an understanding of the local area in which the design will be featured, as well as research into past kit designs, colour schemes and objects/symbols which represent that area as whole. Once I complete this research, I create a kit template, which will include the top, shorts, and socks, and make sure they belong as a set. I will then create my design, incorporating the research I conducted previously, to create a unique design for each football club, which represents their state/local area. My overall goal for this Creative Project is to further develop my understanding of Graphic Design, the project-planning phase, further my skills with Adobe software such as Illustrator and Photoshop, and create a set of designs that I am proud of.
