Program for the Advancement of Children’s Education Week 1– American Pride Week

The students at P.A.C.E had a fun filled first week. The first themed week the students did ac- tivities around American Pride and you can see their work hanging outside of the classrooms at Mathew Jago School. The students in each of the groups did something special and different. Some of the A groups made flags with handprints, used finger paints using red, white and blue and make firecrackers with construction paper! A few of the B groups made tissue paper Flags and used their hands and made the American Flag! The upper B groups have been using their gardening skills and have used those skills outside and it looks great! The C groups made flags with dots, and enjoyed making chocolate covered pretzels with red, white and blue sprinkles. The D groups loved making acoustic poems and enjoyed their First Day of D’s Diner! For D’s diner they served the American Diner favorites, milkshakes and hamburgers! All of the students showed their American Pride during the first week of P.A.C.E through the various activities. Each of the groups enjoyed the first program called the Prismatic American Pride laser show, where they got to watch lasers and sing along to some of their favorite songs. American Pride week was a great first week to kick off P.A.C.E.

Page 2 The P.A.C.E. Times Week 2— Storybook Heroes Week

Story Book Heroes adorned the hallways of P.A.C.E. as the Crabgrass Puppet Theatre presented Jack and the Beanstalk. This English fairy tale truly captured the hearts of our students as they immersed themselves in a tale about an underdog who goes out into the world despite the challenges he faces. Our classrooms were filled with many story book heroes and superheroes from all of walks of life. One thing you can always count on at P.A.C.E. is that everyone has a unique and special quality just like our story book heroes.

Page 3 The P.A.C.E. Times Week 3– Math + Magic= Fun Week

The theme of Week 3 at PACE was Math and Magic is Fun! D’s Diner served fully stuffed tacos, Spanish rice, chips and salsa, and cool watermelon fresca in their famous Cantina. The Diner was decorated and the servers were dressed to impress! Mr. Fish invited stu- dents on stage to participate in his program. Mr. Fish incorporated numbers, counting, and addition into his intriguing Magic Show. The Math and Magic is Fun Theme created an ex- citing atmosphere for students to work on their math facts!

Page 4 The P.A.C.E. Times Week 4– Spin, Pop, Boom Week

Spin! Pop! Boom! This week our campers were transformed into scientists as we learned how science can affect our lives. Our guest scientist “Mad Jack” showed us how spinning a bucket of water will pre- vent spillage simply by the force and flow of liquid. By the looks of things maybe, just maybe we have a future “Bill Nye the Science Guy” among us.

Page 5 The P.A.C.E. Times Week 5– Beatlemania Week

A Yellow Submarine was allegedly seen on the campus of Camp Pace this week. As the students took a stroll down “Penny Lane” to “Strawberry Fields” as the sounds of the Beatles echoed through the hallways. We learned about the history of the Beatles. Don’t worry fame did not get the best of us!

Page 6 The P.A.C.E. Times Water Slide-A-Thon

The students at P.A.C.E. took some time off from working in their class- room to cool off at the spray park located at Highland Grove. During this time, the students enjoyed jumping and splashing in the re- freshing water and being silly with their friends. The P.A.C.E. Parents Organization and Mr. Patten ar- ranged for the spray park to be re- served exclusively for the P.A.C.E. students. Everyone had a great time getting wet and cooling off be- fore returning back to school. Thank you P.A.C.E. Parents Organization and Mr. Patten for allowing us to have such a great experience. I PLAY AMERICA

Students bounced out of their buses and through the door in excitement. Laser tag, arcade games, go-karts and more sparked the kid’s interest. Buzzing, ringing, and the screams of ecstatic children rang through iPlay America. It was a day to revel in the glory of the winners and bask in the enjoyment of the children. A day these kids will always remember having here at P.A.C.E.

This summer at P.A.C.E. has been a very excit- ing and eventful time. Children who were strug- gling in reading and writing were able to learn new reading skills throughout P.A.C.E. The new strategies helped the children to increase their skills in reading. In daily small groups, using Recipe for Reading, the students explored sound-symbol relationships, sound words, phrases, fluency, and phonics instruction.

P.A.C.E. was enjoyed by all this summer!! I would like to wish all the students the best of luck for their upcoming school year. -Miss White

Nurses

As usual, the nurse’s office has been its typical beehive of activity, addressing students, staff and parents. Mrs. Giannone and Mrs. De Noyelles en- joyed the company of your children on trips, visits to classrooms and the normal day to day encoun- ters in the nurse’s office. It has been a pleasure to be here for your children and look forward to see- ing you all again next summer.

Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 10 Speech

Students made a big splash into speech and language therapy at PACE this sum- mer. Speech-language lessons incorpo- rated the program’s weekly themes and engaged students in fun and interactive activities. From volcanic explosions to exploring our five senses, students were able to maintain their receptive and ex- pressive language skills using a hands- on approach. The speech-language pathologists thoroughly enjoyed their time working with the students and fac- ulty here at PACE.

Counseling

This summer has been an exceptional one at P.A.C.E. The children worked together on re- solving their conflicts, as well as, helping each other in class and during counseling sessions to be better students and better friends to their classmates. The P.A.C.E. staff has worked well with students in helping them resolve different issues that come up. The children have shown an understanding of the cultural differences in others, and have expressed themselves appropriately in and out of class. Students and staff working together have made this a positive year at P.A.C.E. We look forward to next year.

Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 11 A-1 A-1, led by Mrs. Zecchino, Mrs. Ratajczak, Mrs. Hahn, and Mrs. Gambetta, spent the summer at PACE 2014 growing into more skillful students and learning to love life and one another. We strengthened our relationships with our peers and developed language by playing alongside of and interacting with one another every day. Emphasis was placed on being able to convey wishes and needs to both teach- ers and friends in meaningful ways. We also practiced turn taking and self-control by playing some tra- ditional board games, like Candyland and Memory. Some highlights of our summer included Sing-A- Longs with our friends from A-2 and acting out classic stories, like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, with masks and props. You could often find A-1 dancing (and laughing) as we practiced music and move- ment exercises. It was certainly an active summer, successful because of the cooperation we received from home. Thank you to all of our A-1 families. Have a safe and restful remainder of the summer.

Mrs. Casoni’s crew in B-3 have been very busy during this fabulous fun filled summer here at P.A.C.E.! We’ve made new friends and practiced all the important skills we learned throughout the year. We started off strong with the red, white, and blue as we learned about American Pride. The children discussed the Fourth of July and many famous American heroes, and symbols. We had a blast talking about our favorite Fourth of July activi- ties (watching fireworks, going to the beach, and attending a picnic). The students made flags and celebrated the birth of America! We enjoyed a laser light show and singing American Pride songs. During Story Book Heroes week, the class put their knowledge of heroes and what it means to be a hero to the test! We read about Johnny Appleseed and what characteristics he possessed that made him a hero. We defined the word hero and used writing prompts to explain, in detail who our own personal hero was. The class explored community helpers who work effortlessly to keep us safe and we were reminded that everyday people are heroes too! The class was treated to a puppet the- atre show about Jack and the Beanstalk, they thoroughly enjoyed this presentation and learning the tale of Jack and the Bean- stalk. To extend this story and add a math component we traced and measured our feet and compared and contrasted our feet to the Giant’s feet. We measured objects around the classroom using our feet. The student’s made super hero masks and used their creative minds to come up with some awesome super powers they would like to have and how they would use them. Math and Magic week was one of our favorites here at P.A.C.E. We brushed up on our math skills that we have been learning throughout the school year. We practiced jump rope while counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. We read a story, Huggly’s Pizza by Tedd Arnold. As a whole group lesson we then graphed our favorite type of pizza and made a pizza craft that we then “cut” into fourths to review our knowledge of fractions. We added some Magic into our classroom by crafting our very own magical wands. The students were each given magical straws and we discussed why they changed colors when we drank through them, the children loved watching them change colors. We explored with shaving cream and food coloring to make a magical potion. The B-3 crew especially enjoyed the Mr. Fish show and were engaged and focused during his exciting “math magical” presentation. Spin, Pop, Boom week was AWESOME! The children were excited as we explored physical and chemical changes throughout the week. We made our very own bubble potion which was a blast. The class witnessed the wonders of air pres- sure as we experimented with helium balloons in the classroom. We talked about science and experiments. We made predic- tions and tested out our predictions with a floating egg, experiment, it was “egg-citing! The students participated in a sink/ float experiment, a taste test (5 senses), and a prediction experiment (how many minutes until the ice pop melts)! We explored our 5 senses again as we played Ned’s Head. During Beatlemania week we all learned that; “All You Need Is Love”. We were introduced to each band member and what instrument they played. We voted and graphed our favorite Beatles song after listening to their music. We improved our reading fluency and decoding of words as we read aloud the lyrics to “8 days a week”. We circled nouns and pronouns togeth- er and talked about the difference. We completed a classroom activity after introducing the Beatles song “Help”. We watched the song on youtube and the children said the names of every member when I stopped the image. We used the song “Here Comes the Sun” to review opposite words and explore weather and seasons. It was so exciting to see how interested the chil- dren were learning about these musical legends! Our students had the opportunity to see many amazing shows this summer, as well as spend the day at Iplay America, splash around at the spray park, and who can forget the amazing talent show and sing-a-long!! Friendships have been formed and memories have been made, we thank all who help to keep this wonderful program going strong. Mrs. Casoni , Ms. McGrath, Ms. Frazer, and Ms. Bagonyi had an amazing summer with the B-3 crew and wish them nothing but the best for the upcoming school year.

Miss Cardello, Miss Kathy, and Miss Lisa’s B-5 Balloons had a fantastic summer at P.A.C.E.! The children were ex- tremely busy since the first day they arrived in the classroom. We started off P.A.C.E. with American Pride Week. During this week we talked about the 4th of July and American symbols. We also made our own American flags and firework projects! To conclude the week the children saw a Lazer Show, which they absolutely loved. The second week of P.A.C.E. was Storybook Heroes Week. As a class we read about many storybook heroes including our fa- vorite “The Rainbow Fish.” The class also made their own “Rainbow Fish” to go with the story and wrote about who their heroes were. At the end of “Storybook Heroes Week” we saw a Jack-and-the-Beanstalk Puppet Show. The class had many laughs and really enjoyed this show. Along with doing crafts during our weeks at P.A.C.E. we also worked on both Language Arts and Mathematics skills. The class’ favorite Mathematics lesson was about fractions because they got to work with Skittles. Our third week was Math + Magic = Fun Week. During this week we had fun with our color changing straws, our growing reptiles, and making symmetrical masks. To end the week, the class saw a Math and Magic Show by Dr. Fish. At the beginning of our “Spin, Pop, Boom” Week, the class saw a “Mad Science Show” and were fascinated by the experiments. We even did our own experiment with called “Diet Coke and Mentos Eruption”. The class also learned how to hoola hoop and throw frisbees. To conclude to week, B- 5 went to D’s Diner for Japanese Cuisine exquisitely prepared by the all the D groups in P.A.C.E. The “Balloons” learned how to measure ingredients to make fruit smoothies. B-5 is excited for our final week at P.A.C.E. in which we will be going to the Spray Park and I-Play America along with many other fun activities! What a great summer we had!

B7 Brains have never been more anxious to experience another wonderful year at camp. Ms. Camuso, Mrs. Stepnowski, Ms. Donnelly, and Mrs. Maloney’s B7 Brains saluted their way into American Pride Week by creating booming fireworks and sparklers as well as comparing and contrasting between America’s birthday and our own birth- days. We experienced a spectacular laser light show and shared our favorite Fourth of July celebrations during the first week at Camp P.A.C.E. With excitement, B7 Brains brought out their imagination and creativity by writing their own story to go along with the hero character they made out of crafts during the week of Storybook Heroes. The Minute to Win It club is back again building paper towers sky high in one minute and practicing defying gravity with balloons. B7 Brains couldn’t wait to make their way to the other clubs such as crafts, performing science experiments, and playing games. Mr. Fish’s Magic show was phenomenal. As we made our way into Math + Magic = Fun Week, B7 Brains solved how many points their name is worth completing an “All About Me” involving numbers. The students in B7 reviewed the solar system and created planet mo- biles. A magic wand that could change anything was created by each student in B7 Brains. Our Wii bowling scores have been increasing each week as the students continue to bowl. As Spin, Pop, Boom week approached, the students in B7 Brains became scientists experimenting different things and bakers as they made a dessert and created a how to writing about how to make it. In addition, during Spin, Pop, Boom Week, B7 continue to share their background knowledge as well as gaining more of a hands-on learning experience about Physical science such as the states of matter. The students in B7 showed enthusiasm and excite- ment as we experimented surface tension. The students learned that surface tension is the result of a strong attraction between molecules in a liquid. They learned the steps of how to complete an experiment. Other experiments we per- formed involved air taking up space and many other various physic experiments using water. We watched as we formed an egg with the shell into a dancing egg without the shell by using vinegar. The students tried an experiment known as Potato Plummet. Each student tried and succeeded with yanking the pie pan out and watching the potato fall into the measuring cup due to the force of gravity. Last but not least, we gained knowledge during Beatles Mania week as we learned interesting information about a band before our time. B7 Brains are continuing to blossom and bring out the best moments of Camp P.A.C.E. 2014.

B12 Pirates Set Sail on Swashbuckling Adventures During the course of P.A.C.E., we the B12 Pirates have experienced many various activities from trips to assisting in various community service projects. One project we take great pride in is our commitment to improve the landscape around the school building itself. As a group, we pulled weeds surrounding the entire school, to create a more aesthetic pleasing image. In addition, to pulling weeds, we cut branches, created a more defined border in the garden, and swept up the loosened dirt. As a group, we have received recognition from Mr. Patten for continuing efforts. Whenever snack or ice cream day rolls around, you can count on the B12 Pirates to be in charge of setting up the snack area and distributing snacks to all of the groups. Don’t worry, even if you are on a trip, we will make sure your class gets their snack/ice cream as well. On pretzel day, we walk around with maps delivering the pretzels and envelopes to all classes. Our main focus during P.A.C.E. was to teach our students vocational skills that will benefit them not only in their ongoing education, but in their lives as well. The first trip we took was to what’s The Scoop in Metuchen. Instead of traveling straight there by bus, the bus dropped us off at Metro Park Train Station. As preparation for the trip, Ms. Huber and Mr. Scarano explained how to read a train schedule using technology as a visual aide. Target and Rainforest Café were our next destinations. While in Target, we distributed a scavenger hunt, tasking our students with find- ing, recording the price, and the expiration date of several of the same item such as potato chips. Rainforest Cafe offered the opportunity for our class to order their own food in a restaurant. Our final class trip will be at Trinity Church where our class will serve food in the soup kitchen.

It has been a magical summer in Ms. McFadden’s (Ms. Brittany) C-1 Mousketeer’s class at P.A.C.E.! The fun started out for our preschoolers during American Pride Week where we made some very patriotic art projects and learned some well- known songs to show our American Pride! We even made delicious chocolate covered pretzels decorated with red, white, and blue sprinkles! We went to infinity and beyond during our Storybook Heroes Week when we read our favorite books and found our favorite super heroes! We made handprints and turned ourselves into superheroes! Week 3 was so much fun because we learned our numbers and did exciting magic tricks by creating our very own putty! Math + Magic= Fun Week pro- vided fun projects where we counted items such as balloons, anchors, and animals! Spin, Pop, Boom Week we discovered all different objects and food that made these sounds. We identified objects and even finger painted these words and had a great time saying them! Finally, Week 5 was Beatle mania Week! C11 has done lots of fun things to celebrate the themes at P.A.C.E. this year. During American Pride week, we learned about the different shapes, sizes and colors of the flag, as well as some of its history. We celebrated this week by making American Flag collages. The students cut out various pictures and shades of colors to create an artistic ver- sion of the flag. The second week of P.A.C.E., we incorporated the theme of superheroes into our topical conversation, writing and math lessons. The most fun, however, was following a recipe to make an Aqua Man Ice Cream Float. Math + Magic week was a lot of fun in our room too. Our Following Directions Activity had us make Magical Bouncing Jello with common household ingredients. Our weekly club that week was also magical as we made ice chalk. Going outside in the hot sun was the best part because we got to create pictures outside with our chalk made of ice! Our trip to Rebounderz was a great way to get out and do some exercise! Everyone was really excited to jump on lots of trampolines and bounce all over! C11 really did have a wonderful time learning, while having some fun with our weekly themes at PACE!

Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 37 A Message From the Director

We have just completed our 48th summer here at the P.A.C.E. Program. Through- out the summer our staff has worked with your children to strengthen and reinforce the academic skills that are identified in their individual education plans while providing them with many activities that have helped to further develop their social and emotional growth. Our P.A.C.E. Parents’ Group has continued to grow and we are very grateful for all that they do for us. They continue to be successful in securing the funding for our annu- al events and for our P.A.C.E. shirts. We are grateful for your support for the Tenth Annu- al P.A.C.E. Water-Walk-a-Thon (now held at Highland Grove Spray Park) and the annual P.A.C.E. Breakfast at the Elks. These activities aid in raising funds to greater enhance the programs that we offer during the summer. The group also continues to meet dur- ing the course of the school year and they provide our students with several activity nights during the fall and spring months in addition to offering child care each month during their meetings. After each meeting they also conduct the Parents’ Support Group to discuss some of the issues that parents of special education students must deal with on a day to day basis. Please check your local cable station for some of the group’s upcoming events. You will also be able to locate the P.A.C.E. Parents’ Website as it will appear as a link to the Board of Education’s home page. On behalf of all of our students and our staff, we’d like to thank you for sharing your child’s summer with us. We are extremely fortunate in Woodbridge Township to work with a Superintendent and School Administration that collaborates with the Board of Education to provide continual support for the Woodbridge Township Extended School Year Program. Their and their commitment to the P.A.C.E. Program have created many wonderful experiences for our kids.
