(AKA The Night We Sprang a Leak) Talking Pictures TV with Craig Douglas Craig Douglas was a popular singer in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His chart-topper, Only Sixteen (1959), sold more copies in the UK than Sam Cooke’s original version. Other top twenty hits include: A Teenager in Love (1959), Pretty Blue Eyes (1960), The Heart of a Teenage Girl (1960), A Hundred Pounds of Clay (1961), Time (1961), When My Little Girl is Smiling (1962), Our Favourite Melodies (1962) and Oh Lonesome Me (1962). His early career bridged the gap between the end of the easy listening period, when the focus was on ‘crooners’ and the beginning of teenage pop music; his ability was to combine both styles. Douglas topped the bill on the Beatles’ first major stage show and also appeared in the 1962 film It’s Trad, Dad! with Helen Shapiro. He continued his career on stage until 2010, and appeared at the Amersham Rock’n’Roll Club on 11 December 2010, at an event to celebrate his work. John Leyton, Mike Berry and the Flames all took part, while Jet Harris and other celebrities attended. He recently appeared on stage at a Talking Pictures TV/Renown Pictures film festival in St Albans in 2019. He was interviewed and also sang, the audience joining in with fond enthusiasm. In this exclusive interview, he shares memories of the 1960s music scene. Information derived from the published and unpublished work of others has been acknowledged in the text and references are given in the list of sources. Signed: Tom Hennessy Date: 2 Abstract The emergence of folk, jazz, blues, skiffle, rock n roll and R&B scenes in the post-war period of 1945 – 1964 was a major development in Anglophonic music culture. Key individuals operating within these scenes frequently pursued authenticity, or framed their musical activities as “authentic” – that is as cultural produce that was supposedly “true” to a certain way of life, or that offered something “real” in the face of the commercial culture of the mainstream. While this “authenticism” was productive in many respects it also represents a problem for the cultural historian. This thesis tackles this problem by first diagnosing the origins, nature and effects of authenticism, and then by undertaking three new historical studies through which a differently inflected history of this remarkable phase of popular music can be drawn.
