Cole, Ph.D. Western Michigan University, 2013 This study contributes to the description and meaning of student activism within the context of Christian college environments and cultures, and is interpreted through the sociological concept of symbolic interactionism. The purpose of this study is to help fill the void in the literature on student activism at Christian colleges and universities, positioning it within literature of broader Christian culture and activism, Christian higher education, generational history of college student activism, and student development theories and leadership models. -

Philanthropist Bruce Bastian, founder of WordPerfect, native of Utah, and supporter of the 2006 Equality Ride, has offered another challenge grant for the Equality Ride. He will match every gift to the project between now and March 21, the day the 2007 Equality Ride arrives in his home state of Utah! This is Mr. Bastian’s way of challenging you to support the 2007 riders! Let’s show him we can do it! As I write this today, the Soulforce young adults are working to make the 2007 Equality Ride a life-changing experience for the 56 riders and the 32 schools they will visit. Haven Herrin and Jake Reitan are in Los Angeles meeting with some of our funders. Jarrett Lucas, Co- director of the East Bus, is working on logos and designs for the buses that reflect the energy and hope of the students. Katie Higgins, Director of Operations for the Equality Ride, is crunch- ing the numbers and working with Co-founder Gary Nixon on figuring out ways to limit the expenses of the riders. Alexey Bulokhov, Co-director of the West Bus, is making sure each rider is in communica- tion with his or her designated university president. He is following up on the assigned readings and Bible studies that prepare the riders for the conversations they will encounter. Today Katie and Jarrett will be meeting with the Special Assistant to the President of Dordt college in Sioux City, Iowa, which is the first stop on the ride for one of the buses. -

A nonprofit organization located in Lynchburg, Virgina, Soulforce was founded by Reverend Mel White and his partner Gary Nixon in 1999 to combat the anti-gay rhetoric and political actions of the religious right. Soulforce is named for Mahatma Gandhi's teaching of satyagraha, or "soul force," which he defined as a plan of action to transform society. The "soul force" principles of relentless nonviolent resistance were also practiced by social activist Dorothy Day, who founded the Catholic Workers Union in 1933, and by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. As the organization's vision statement emphasizes, "The mission of Soulforce is to cut off homophobia at its source--religious bigotry." It employs a "take it to the streets" style of activism to underline the connection between antigay religious dogma and the resulting attacks on the lives and civil liberties of glbtq Americans. Nearly 5,000 people responded to Mel White's 1999 invitation to take the "Journey into Soulforce." Since then, Soulforce has recruited and trained tens of thousands of volunteers in the "soul force" principles of truth, love, nonviolence, and voluntary redemptive suffering through its educational program, Journey into Soulforce. The training program takes about eight weeks to complete; each step contains information and ideas, assignments for personal reflection and writing, and recommended readings and videos. -

February 20, 2006 Soulforce A Personal Note from Mel White, President, Soulforce, Inc. Dear friends of Soulforce, I am delighted that Jeff Lutes has taken on the day by day tasks of Soulforce as our Executive Director. Soulforce has grown so rapidly that we must expand staff, programs and budget just to keep up with it. Now, as President, I will be free to do what I do best, write and speak for Soulforce and travel across the US recruiting, training and mobilizing Soulforce volunteers. In fact, thanks to Jeff and our amazing Soulforce team, I can finish at last Religion Gone Bad: A Call to Resist (the sequel to Stranger at the Gate) to be released by Penguin Books Sept. 1, 2006, and made available to you first. Whether you're 65 like me or just starting out in activism, remember the words of Harriet Tubman when she said, “If you're tired, keep going; if you’re scared, keep going; if you’re hungry, keep going; if you want the taste of freedom, keep going.” With your help, Soulforce can give legs and voice to this critical work. I’ve spent my first dozen years as an out gay clergy bandaging and burying the victims of the false teachings and destructive actions of Protestant and Catholic Church leaders against my gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender sisters and brothers. Unfortunately, most of these same religious leaders believe their antigay rhetoric. These peo- ple are not evil, but we must resist the evil that they do. Relentless nonviolent resistance is the primary reason Soulforce exists.
