Language was to be used as art to question art. It would provide a scientific and critical device to address what was wrong with modernist abstract painting, and this approach became the basis for the activity of the Art & Language group, active from about 1967. They investigated how and under what conditions the naming of art takes place, and suggested that meaning in art might lie not with the material object itself, but with the theoretical argument underpinning it. By 1969 the group that constituted Art & Language started to grow. They published a magazine Art-Language and their practice became increasingly rooted in group discussions like those that took place on their art theory course at Coventry College of Art. He is returning to the land of his birth after thirteen years abroad. This move is the culmination of a series of contradictory desires, relationships, and life demands. Burn is leaving the New York art scene after years of involvement with the people, institutions and ideas that comprised a vital strand in the history of contemporary art. His departure, at first sight, appears as the end of his engagement with the ideas and strategies of a vanguard movement of which he was a significant member. Against this, we will argue that Burn’s exit must be understood as the continuation of the more radical dimensions of his work, and that his decisions and actions remain a model for alternative practice today. Illustrations for Art-Language’ developed in partnership with the Château de Montsoreau – Museum of Contemporary Art. Opening on 16th September to coincide with European Heritage Days, this presentation de- monstrates how initiatives of the Art & Language collective are at the root of an important part of the history of 20th century art and have largely contri- buted to the emergence and the recognition of conceptual art as a major artistic movement of the 1960s-1970s. By incorporating reflective surfaces, live video feedback, or sensors in their works, contemporary artists around the world have been challenging what had come to be a binary relation between the beholder and the art object, thereby, heightening viewers' awareness of the social and spatial contexts of aesthetic experience. Mirror Mirror presents classic mirror pieces from the 1960s and early 1970s by major international artists alongside more recent mirror works by contemporary Australian artists. curated by Ann Stephen 3 4 Jumping through the Mirror Ann Stephen some time in 1967, the expatriate Australian conceptual artist Ian Burn had a revelation when, like a sleepwalker awoken, he discovered his mirror pieces were not alone: ‘I recall my surprise when I realised how many other artists were using materials like mirrors, glass and clear plastic ([Robert] Morris, Robert Smithson, Michael Baldwin, Keith Sonnier, Joseph Kosuth.)’.1 Burn’s recollection of this moment—in his book Dialogue, published in 1991, midway between then and now—inspired this exhibition. Mirror is the surface par excellence of late modernism. Its paradoxes confound the illusion of transparency—indexing the instabilities of perception, while offering the possibility of reflexivity. As Burn observed, ‘a mirror produces not only an event or a piece of self-conscious theatre, but also deflects visual attention away from the object itself. Like [Ad] Reinhardt’s paintings, mirrors and glass have a low level of visibility.’2 Mirror Mirror: Then and Now extends beyond the company of 1960s and ’70s international minimal-conceptual artists by including contemporary Australian artists who reference and play with their legacy.

Ian Burn was an Anglo-Australian artist best known for his participation in the New York branch of Art & Language, a Conceptual art collective that flourished in the early 1970s. The New York branch of this collective published, most notably in The Fox, Marxist analyses of power relations, commodity production and exchange within the art world. Its members also composed, performed, recorded and videotaped some extremely funny rock-and-roll songs with revolutionary lyrics that often quoted from Marx. But Burn had an artistic career both before and after this period. Before, his work evolved from early traditional landscapes and self- portraits into increasingly abstract and, beginning in 1965, Minimalist paintings. These led to Conceptual art works and installations which then motivated his participation in the Art & Language group. After Art & Language disbanded, he seemed to disappear from the international scene. In fact he returned to Australia in 1977 to work for the Australian labor movement through a small company, Union Media Services. There he organized cultural programming for trade union members, curated exhibitions of their art work and wrote related essays and commentaries. He published articles on Anglo-Australian landscape painting and on Albert Namatjira, an Aboriginal artist of the Aranda (Arrernte) tribe.

    Foreword Art & Language: A Conquest By Stephanie Cristello In April of 2016, I was invited by Jill Silverman van Coenegrachts, as part of a research trip for EXPO CHICAGO through President | Director Tony Karman, to attend the opening of the Philippe Méaille Collection at the Château de Montsoreau—a beautiful renaissance style castle installed at the convergence of two rivers, the Loire and the Vienne in France. The château was built on the remains of a XI-century construction, then used as a strategic military point, until renovated to completion during the second half of the XV–XVI century. The perfectly picturesque building held, contrary to its outward expectations, one of the largest collections of work by British conceptualists Art & Language. Defined by their rigorously stark and administrative aesthetic, the pieces included within the château exhibition are spaced sparely throughout vaulted dining rooms, chambers, and turrets—each painted a stark chalk white, the closest impression to a contemporary art situation the context could achieve. Within the stone walls, the air was saturated and soft; the large expanse of the shallow river drifted steadily by. The first encounter is with Mirror Piece (196 5), a line of sixteen reflective surfaces, each a slightly varied size of standard proportions, neatly installed between two inset windows, and flanked on either side by the castle’s impressively large chimneys. Despite its minimal approach, the piece glimmers ornately as the sun sets, casting a myriad of reflections about the room. Each metallic panel captures its surroundings—rather than contributes to them—blithely reproducing passages of the pale green stained glass opposite the piece, catching angular fragments of the wooden timbers that lined the ceiling above, and returning the image of a void that once held fires from either edge of the work.

The editing combined footage of inside the Pompidou Centre, invaded by thousands of visitors, with other shots filmed outside in the streets. Outside the museum, various crowds demonstrated and were confronted by riot police. The programme, produced by The Open University in collaboration with the BBC, was originally supposed to be educational. To judge from the tone, however, it could be deemed an exercise in institutional critique, the same kind of artistic practice associated with Hans Haacke, Marcel Broodthaers, Michael Asher or Andrea Fraser. The political, economic and social questioning of the museum carried out by these artists constitute what we nowadays call, broadly speaking, artistic research. Baldwin’s commentary threw out a ‘critical and provocative’ observation about the modern art museum housed in the Pompidou Centre. To his mind, that was ‘a strategic and administrative response to the 1968 events’. He went on to say that ‘its raw materials are people’, and after commenting on its genuine construction lattice, considering it a place for ‘the spectacle following the death of culture’, he concludes with a remark about the impression the massive building left. ‘Inside’, the voice-over said, ‘practice is made a mythology’.
