Jerome jail, redux ramps up production By Joshua Palmer Times-News writer Jayco Inc. said Wednesday it will hire 200 workers and boost production at facil- ities in Twin Falls and Middlebury, Ind., after sales outpaced inventories in the third and fourth quarters of 2009. Akos Sefcisk, gen- eral manager of Twin Falls operations, said his plant will hire as many as 30 addition- al workers, bringing its total payroll in Twin Falls to more than 180 employees. The plant employed about 200 before the national recession forced the company to lay off more than 40 people in October 2008. Jayco also consolidated its operations by moving production from the building at 621 Washington St. S., to the building in its 176-acre industrial park on Hankins Road. The recreational trailer manufacturer does not have plans to resume operations at the Washington Street location. TEXANSTEXANS VS. AT PATRIOTS BILLS TTHOUSTONeXeX (8-7) NEW AN ANENGLAND (10-5) S S TEXANS WRAP UP THE REGULAR SEASON WITH A HOME DATE AGAINST PATRIOTS The Houston Texans return home after two road wins seeking their first winning season as they face the New Eng- land Patriots on January 3, 2010 at Noon at Reliant Stadium. The Texans enter Sunday in the playoff hunt. Houston looks to extend its winning streak to four straight which would tie its franchise-best mark from 2008. The Texans face the Patriots for the third time in team history. Houston looks to gain their first win in the series. Houston last hosted New England in 2003 when the eventual Super Bowl champions escaped town with a 23-20 win in overtime. Houston’s 379.3 yards of total offense per game ranks fifth in the NFL. The Texans are paced by a pair of league leaders. WR Andre Johnson leads the NFL with 1,504 receiving yards. He became only the second receiver in league history to post back-to-back 1,500 yard seasons. He is 71 yards shy of matching his career best in receiving yards from last season. Johnson looks to become the first player in over a decade to lead the league in receiving yards in consecutive seasons. QB Matt Schaub leads the NFL with a career-high 4,467 yards. If Schaub and John- son can finish the season at the top of their respective categories, they would become the eighth set of teammates since the 1970 NFL merger and first since 1998 to lead the league in passing and receiving yards in a single season.

  • NFL Draft Breakdown --- One Week Before the Draft by MATTHEW HATFIELD --- Saturday, April 16Th, 2005
2005 NFL Draft Breakdown --- One Week Before the Draft BY MATTHEW HATFIELD --- Saturday, April 16th, 2005 Kansas State RB Darren Sproles draws comparisons to Barry Sanders, but will he be able to counter lack of size with speed at the next level? Arizona Cardinals 1. #8 RB Cedric Benson - Texas 2. #44 CB Brandon Browner - Oregon St. 3. #75 QB Adrian McPherson - Florida St. 3. #95 OG/OT Evan Mathis - Alabama 4. #111 DT Atiyyah Ellsion - Missouri 5. #168 CB Ellis Hobbs - Iowa St. 7. #226 TE Billy Bajema - Oklahoma St. Arizona Cardinals (6-10): What the Arizona Cardinals decide to do with their first round pick - 8th overall - all comes down to whether or not they can pull off a deal for RB Travis Henry. It’s very conceivable that one of the top two corners - Antrel Rolle and Pac-Jones - will be available as Tennessee seems like the only team in the top seven potentially after a defensive back. That sets up well for them as does the fact there’s also an increasing chance one of the three highest rated running backs should slide to them or beyond. Because the Henry deal appears off right now, my prediction is Dennis Green selects Cedric Benson. Like last year, look for Green and the crew to really do some damage in the second, third and fourth rounds of this draft with some players that slip through on draft boards. Atlanta Falcons 1. #27 S Brodney Pool - Oklahoma 2. #59 OG Elton Brown - Virginia 3. #90 WR Vincent Jackson - No.

  • Pavlik-Taylor II: Courage Under Fire
48 AN UNFORGIVING SPORT As 2008 began, Kelly Pavlik was seeking inclusion on the short list of boxing superstars. Pavlik-Taylor II: Courage under Fire The crowning achievement for one fighter is often the low point for another. In July 2005, when Jermain Taylor dethroned Bernard Hopkins, it was his greatest triumph. But for the Executioner, it was the most bitter defeat in an illustrious ring career. Two years later, boxing’s wheel of for- tune turned again. Kelly Pavlik seized the middleweight title by knock- ing out Taylor in seven rounds. This time, it was Jermain whose world was turned upside down while Pavlik enjoyed the celebration. Pavlik is from Youngstown, Ohio; a city in the heart of the nation’s rust-belt that has fallen upon hard economic times. After the fight, Youngstown and the surrounding region embraced its new hero with a fervor that America reserves for reigning sports champions. Kelly is a hometown boy who made good. Like Youngstown, he’d been on the canvas. But he got up and won in dramatic fashion.“My style is to come out swinging and keep swinging,” he says.“The thing I like most about boxing is, when the bell rings, it’s straight up; me and you.” When Pavlik returned from Atlantic City after his victory over Taylor, his SUV was met at the Ohio border by a caravan of police cars and fire trucks that escorted him home.Thereafter, the perks kept coming. Pavlik threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 4 of the American League Championship series between the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox (“It was a good pitch; 45 miles an hour, I think”); sat beside the legendary Jim Brown after presiding over the coin toss before a Browns-Dolphins match-up (“a real thrill”); and addressed the Ohio State Buckeyes before the Ohio State–Michigan football game; (“the greatest sports event in America”).
