OCTOBER 2018 SPECIAL OLYMPICS – YORK COUNTY NEWSLETTER Special Olympics USA Games Seattle 2018 Bob Laudeman, Guest Reporter Throughout the first-week of July two athletes from Special Olympics York County, Jonathan Martin, and Jenny Laudeman, participated in the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games held in Seattle, Washington. As members of Team Pennsylvania, they competed for three days at the Willows Run Golf Club in Redmond, Washington under the direction of Coach Nat Martin. Jonathan competed as a Level 4, Individual Play golfer, playing nine holes of golf each day on a well maintained, challenging course. Jenny participated as a Level 1 Individual Skills golfer that included: chipping, pitching, short putt, long putt, driver, and five-iron competitions. Both athletes improved their scores each day, and at the end of the competition, Jonathan and Jenny proudly accepted Silver Medals at the Awards Ceremony. Team Pennsylvania gathered in Philadelphia on Friday, June 29th and flew to Seattle on Saturday, June 30th. Team Pennsylvania included 50 athletes and unified partners, 16 coaches, and SOPA staff, who were all housed in Terry Hall at the University of Washington Campus. The Opening Ceremony was held on Sunday, July 1st at the University of Washington Husky Football Stadium and televised on ABC Sports and ESPN. The competitions, held in fourteen (14) sports, began on Monday, July 2nd and ended on Friday, July 6th. Team Pennsylvania athletes competed in Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Golf, Gymnastics, Powerlifting, Unified Soccer, Swimming, and Tennis. The Closing Ceremony was held Friday evening, and Team Pennsylvania returned to Philadelphia on Saturday, July 8th.Jonathan and Jenny enjoyed competing, but also loved the Opening Ceremony, visiting the Fan Zone, the Mariners baseball game, and sight-seeing in Seattle with their families.

The 2014 Games official website is www.2014specialolympics.org and is constantly being updated with information, including feature articles on participants, tentative schedules, photo galleries, and much more. What are the official dates of the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games? The official dates for the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games are June 14-21. The Family Center will open at 8:00am on Saturday, June 14. The Opening Ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 15 and competition will commence on Monday, June 16. The competition will conclude on Friday, June 20 and the Closing Ceremony is that same evening. What airport do we fly into? What started as a radical idea has since grown into a powerful international movement of more than 5.7 million athletes and unified partners in 172 countries. Those Games were revolutionary because they challenged the dominant social beliefs about the capacity and potential of people with intellectual disabilities (ID). The inaugural Games demonstrated that people with ID were capable of things that were previously considered unimaginable—not only athletic prowess on par with any population, but a model of sportsmanship, inclusion, and joy the world rarely sees. Now, on the momentous 50th anniversary of the first Special Olympics, the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games are sending another important message—by setting a new bar for sustainability. The 2018 USA Games will leave a lasting positive legacy on the Seattle area, and inspire future Games to not only meet this new standard, but to re-define the limits again and again, sending a message of possibility to an ever-broader audience. CELEBRATING THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS MOVEMENT WHO: More than 4,000 athletes and coaches from all 50 states and the District of Columbia along with 10,000 family members and friends will descend upon Seattle and the surrounding region for the 2018 USA Games. In total there are 14 sports that will be offered including swimming and softball in Federal Way. Over 10,000 volunteers have already been recruited to support the USA Games and 70,000 spectators are expected to attend. WHAT: History of Special Olympics Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the sister of former President John F. Kennedy, launched a crusade to change the way the world treated – or ignored – intellectual disability. This program gained credence as the Kennedy’s disclosed that one of their family members, Rosemary Kennedy, had an intellectual disability. Throughout the 1960’s, Shriver’s commitment saw not only landmark legislation dealing with intellectual disability and disability rights, but was also instrumental in bringing intellectual disability out of the darkness and into the light of public acceptance. The genesis of Special Olympics was a summer day camp that Eunice and her husband, Sargent Shriver, started in the backyard of their Maryland home. The goal was to explore the children’s skills in a variety of sports and physical activities. The Special Olympics movement has grown to more than 5.7 million athletes and Unified Partners in 172 countries and in 2018 will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. With the support of more than 1 million coaches and volunteers, Special Olympics delivers 32 Olympic-type sports and over 108,000 games and competitions throughout the year.

Overview of the 2022 USA Games The 2022 Special Olympics USA Games will bring together more than 4,000 athletes and Unified Partners, 1,500 coaches and 10,000 volunteers to compete in a variety of sports from June 5-12, 2022. Hosted in Orlando, Florida, participants will have the opportunity to experience one of the world’s most cherished sporting events and compete at some of the country’s top athletic facilities. Team Southern California For the 2022 USA Games, Team Southern California will compete in 7 sports and consist of 73 delegation members: 50 athletes & Unified Partners, 13 coaches, 3 youth leadership experience participants, 5 support staff, AHOD and HOD. Although we will be competing in different sports, we make up one team - TEAM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. We will represent Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) proudly and be prepared physically and mentally for competition. Our success will be determined by becoming the best we can be and always striving to reach our maximum potential. Team SOSC’s composition is detailed in Tables A and B below. 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games
COACH 2022 Special Olympics USA Games, Orlando Florida Special Olympics Team Virginia Head Coach, Assistant Coach, AS Coach Application Orlando, Florida will welcome Team Virginia to the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games. From June 4-12, 2022, Orlando, Florida will be transformed into an Olympic Village to host 4,000 athletes, 1,500 coaches and delegates, and 20,000 family members. Athletes from Virginia will compete in the following sports: Swimming Golf Open Water Swimming Power Lifting Track and Field Tennis Bocce Unified Basketball (coaches selected with team) Bowling 5 v 5 Soccer (coaches selected with team) Coaches selected to represent Team Virginia at the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games must be well educated in coaching and demonstrate qualities that include sportsmanship, dedication to quality training, understand the rules of the sport, and have the ability to function well as a part of a team. All selected coaches will serve a dual role of both coach and chaperone. For selection criteria for all sports please refer to the Athlete Selection document for the games. The Unified Basketball and Soccer Team coaches will be selected with the team and are not part of this application process.
