This is a translation and analysis of the Clivia entry in Bosse’s Handbook. It has been divided into five sections; namely the genus description, three species descriptions and some cultural notes, each presented on a separate page. There are four (occasionally five) entries per page. The top entry is an image of the section from the original publication. This is followed by a digitised mirror of the image given in Leipzig Fraktur Gothic font. Then the German is rendered in Roman font, with all of the abbreviations expanded; and finally there is an English translation. Any pertinent notes may be offered at the bottom of the page.

Clivia (Imatophyllum Hook.) Clivie Hexandria Monogynia. Winter. — Blätter zweizeil, wurzelständig, 1½— 2' lang, riemenförmig, stumpf; Schaft zusammengedrückt, aufrecht, mit einer ungefähr 14blumigen Dolde; Blumen 2" lang (ohne den Fruchtknoten), einwärts gebogen, dunkelorange- oder ziegelrot, nach oben zu in Gelb übergehend und an der Spitze grün.

June, July? — Root bushy, fleshy-thick fibrous; leaves basal, two-rowed, strap-like, large, broad and spanning at the base; stem flat vaulted, broad, with a large, magnificent, multiflowered umbel; sheath multileaved, withering, coloured; flowers large, minium-coloured or minium-rose, coloured yellow at the base, off- standing bell-shaped. The umbel is more than 8" broad.

† The interpretation of the abbreviation ‘Var.’ has given a lot of trouble. As it commences with an upper case letter, it is obviously a noun. There are not very many words in German which begin var- – and as in English, such words are based on the Latin root varius, varia, varium, which means ‘different’. Amongst the nouns (in English), we find variety, variable, variant, variation, variegation; all similar to various German Var- words. However, none of this group of words makes any sense in context. I am unable to find any list of abbreviations offered in Bosse’s book to help clarify this.

Cultur: Sie verlangen einen verhältnißmäßig weiten Topf mit starker Drainage, eine sandige Lauberde mit etwas mürbem Lehm gemischt (oder andere gute, lockere, sandige Erde), im Sommer bei warmer Witterung einen nicht zu sonnenheißen Stand im Freien (oder im offenen Kalthaus) und reichlich Wasser, im Winter im Glashause oder Zimmer + 4—6—12° und je kühler der Standort, desto weniger Wasser. Junge Pflanzen lieben etwas Bodenwärme zum raschen Heranwachsen. Die Wurzeln werden beim Umpflanzen nicht beschnitten. Vermehrung durch ablösbare Nebensprossen und durch Samen im Warmbeet.
Culture: They require a comparatively large pot with strong drainage, a sandy leaf mould mixed with a little friable loam (or other good, loose, sandy soil), in summer during warm weather a not too hot place outside (or in the open cool glasshouse) and abundant water; in winter in the conservatory or indoors at +4—6—12 ° and the cooler the location, the less the water. Young plants love a little bottom heat for more rapid growth. The roots are not pruned at transplanting. Propagating through removable suckers and through seeds in a hotbed.
