To commemorate the event, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway called on owners of classic cars to display their magnificent machines in competition for blue-ribbon awards as part of the 100th Anniversary Indy 500 Mile Race Celebration of Automobiles festivities. Congratulations to Charles Gillett whose 1931 Cadillac V-16 All-Weather Phaeton (pictured left) was selected to participate (a Cadillac served as pace car at the 1931 race). The two day event will be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 13-14th. To read more about the event, visit www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/indy500/ev entinfo/39708-Celebration-of-Automobiles/. In 1973, the Cadillac Eldorado was the pace car. The sheer weight of the Eldorado convertible forced the Cadillac engineers to take some measures to allow the car to reach the high speeds needed. The 8.2 liter (500 cubic inch) engine was tweaked to add horsepower. Pictured left is Daniel Jobe’s Pace Car replica. To read more about the 1973 Eldorado pace cars, visit www.indy500pacecars.com. The 1992 pace car was once again a Cadillac. This time it was an Allanté. Nick Ferrantino’s 1993 Allanté (pictured left) was used by Al Unser, Jr. as a pace/parade car (he won the race). What makes this pace car different than the 1973 Eldorado that was used is that its engine did not need any performance modifications to stay ahead of the field. [Editor’s Note: Did you know that a LaSalle has been used as an Indy 500 Pace Car as many times as a Cadillac? LaSalles were used in 1927, 1934 and 1937 and Cadillacs in 1931, 1973 and 1992.] Visit us on the web! 3 www.clcpotomacregion.org Cadillac & LaSalle Club Potomac Region Caddie Chronicle May 2011 2011 CALENDAR OF EVENTS DATE TIME EVENT LOCATION CONTACT INFORMATION May 6 5:30 pm – 3rd Annual Dover Days Legislative Mall 302-734-4888 or www.visitdover.com Fri 9:00 pm Car Show Dover DE May 7 8:00 am – 53rd Annual AACA Jim Barnett Park Duane Catlett at 540-869-6668 or Sat 4:00 pm Apple Blossom Meet Winchester VA www.huskyclub.com/abmeet.htm May 7 10:30 am – Asbury Methodist Village Asbury Methodist Ken Jones at 301-216-5210 or Sat 2:00 pm 85th Anniversary Celebration Village [email protected] Car Show Gaithersburg MD May 8 10:00 am – Stratford Hall’s Inaugural Stratford VA Beth Sharpe 804-493-8038 ext. 9578 or Sun 5:00 pm Antique Car Show [email protected] May 14 12:00 am - Darnestown Day Saint Nicholas Liz Kraft at 240-447-2995 Sat 4:00 pm Episcopal Church Darnestown MD May 15 9:00 am – 20th Annual Capitol Cadillac Capitol Cadillac Car Show: Diane & Henry Ruby at Sun 3:00 pm Spring Car Show/ Automobilia Greenbelt MD 301-894-8026, Automobilia Auction: Auction George Boxley at 301-261-5634 May 16 7:30 pm – Potomac Region Silver Diner Vince Taliano at 301-258-8321 or Mon 9:30 pm Monthly Meeting Merrifield VA [email protected] May 21 10:00 am – City of Fairfax City Hall www.nvrg.org Sat 3:00 pm Antique Car Show Fairfax VA May 21 10:00 am – CLC Valley Forge Region Faulkner Cadillac Ronnie Hux at [email protected] or Sat 4:00 pm Car Show Trevose PA www.vfrclc.org/upcoming_events.htm Jun 4 9:00 am – CLC Central PA Region's Kelly Cadillac Art Archambeault at 717-557-6974 or Sat 3:00 pm 22nd Annual Spring Show Lancaster PA [email protected] Jun 4 4:30 pm – 25th Annual Leesburg Car Show Leesburg VA's Bob Brown at 571-237-2888 or Sat 10:00 pm Downtown Historic www.novarodsnclassics.org District Jun 4 22nd Annual Burkittsville MD Jon Battle at 540-364-1770, Sat Orphan Car Tour [email protected] or (A LaSalle qualifies www.orphancartour.org as an orphan car Jun 8-12 CLC National Driving Tour Hosted Texas Panhandle Rubye Hubbard Musser at 817-795-2032 or Wed-Sun by the North Texas Region [email protected] Jun 11 10:00 am – CLC Valley Forge Region Delaware Cadillac www.vfrclc.org/upcoming_events.htm Sat 4:00 pm Car Show Wilmington DE Jun 18 9:00 am – CLC Raritan River Region Royal Cadillac Darren Muso at [email protected] Sat 3:00 pm Car Show Florham Park NJ Jun 19 10:00 am – 38th Annual Sully Plantation Sully Plantation Bill Worsham at 703-250-5474, Sun 3:30 pm Father’s Day Car Show Chantilly VA [email protected] or www.gwcmodela.org Jun 20 7:30 pm – Potomac Region Hamburger Hamlet Vince Taliano at 301-258-8321 or Mon 9:30 pm Monthly Meeting North Bethesda MD [email protected] Jul 2 11:00 am – 7th Annual Picnic with Lincoln J. • The Hirohata Merc
Award-Winning Custom: The Hirohata Merc It started out as a standard 1951 Mercury Coupe. And then Sam and George Barris got their hands on it. Here’s a look at the “the most famous custom,” a one-of-a-kind original that set a new standard for style and attitude in the custom car building scene. In 1952, fresh out of the Navy and eager to cruise Los Angeles in a full-blown custom, Masato (Bob) Hirohata located a 1951 Mercury Coupe to become the basis for his radically modified ride. Hirohata took the car to the leading shop at the time, Barris Kustoms, who had already produced many notable customs and had previously chopped Hirohata’s 1949 Chevy. As far as customs go, there are few names more inseparable from the form than Barris. Hirohata had only one request for the final result, a pillarless “hardtop” look similar to what the shop had done to Nick Matranga’s then famous 1940 Mercury Coupe. Beyond that Hirohata allowed the shop to flex their creative muscle. Having little to no restrictions placed on what they could do to the car, the Barris brothers, Sam and George, assisted by Frank Sonzogni, let their imagination run wild, modifying and customizing nearly every square inch of the car. Taking ideals and styling cues from a number of different sources, their radical chop and customization of the car lent it a wholly unique look. From its “Frenched” headlamps, custom grille built from three 1951 Ford grilles, to its 1952 Buick side trim, nothing was left unaltered.

CALIFORNIA!! Detroit was attaching the customizer with great interest. GM’s Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell studied the styling trends, the enthusiasts, the influence of customizers and it was felt the country over. Special interest coolness rides imported all the style and fashion centers from coast to coast. George Barris, long considered king of customizers, was of Greek ancestry and former U.S. Navy man. At age 12 in 1938 he made car models out of balsa wood. George and brother Sam transformed factory stock cars into low slung wildly painted machines gracing Balboa Island South of Los Angeles. Barris Kustom City, North Hollywood covered a half block with a show room filled with show cars and trophies. Harry Westerguard, owner of a fender shop put up with George, finally teaching him torch welding, grinding, cutting, reshaping body panels, layout and leading. George built for Elvis Presley a 1960 Cadillac limousine, double circular rear seat of yacht design, stereo record player, makeup kit, television and drapes. George Barris’ most famous custom was the “Golden Sahara” built in 1954. Each body section was hand formed. Bumper bullets, new then, later came out on the Cadillac becoming famous.
