She was the recipient of the Volunteer of Distinction Award for 2020. Mary Ann gave every Tuesday af- ternoon to help the students at Forest View. She worked with Mrs. Ding- man’s Grade 1 class last year. She selected this grade to volunteer in as she wanted to see the progress continue with some of her former Kindergarten students. Mrs. Ward retired the year before but wasn’t quite ready to not come to school– we are so thankful that she wanted to come back to Forest View. She built great relationships with all in the classroom and supported the learning in many ways. Congratulations to Mary Ann—we couldn’t have done it without your help. Bus Cancellation Durham Student Transportaon Services updated weather cancellaons procedures. In an effort to beer address inclement weather cancellaons, DSTS introduced weather zones. Oshawa is considered Zone 4. DSTS encourages you to review the new zones on our website at www.dsts.on.ca. In case of extreme weather, you can also listen to one of the local radio stations below for notices of transportation cancellations: CKDO-AM 1350, KX96-FM 95.9, CFRB-AM 1010, CBC/CBL 99.1, Q107-FM 107.1, CHFI-FM 98.1, CHUM-FM 104.5, Y92-FM 91.9, EZ ROCK 97.3, CICX 105.9, CKLY-AM 91.0 Information can also be found at www.dsts.on.ca IMPORTANT REMINDER: If for any reason your child’s bus is cancelled in the morning (e.g. inclement weather), the bus WILL NOT run in the afternoon. If you choose to drive your child(ren) to school, please arrange to have them picked up promptly at 2:40 pm. Page 3 FOREST VIEW PUBLIC SCHOOL BOOKING A VIRTUAL INTERVIEW On Friday, October 30, families would have received an email from the school with the complete instructions on booking virtual parent/teacher interviews for November 12 and 13. If you did not receive the email, please reach out to us in the office and we will re-send. In short, please go to https://fvps.parentinterview.com and use the passcode that was sent in the email. Then, find your child(ren)’s teacher(s) and select an available me(s) to virtually meet. Booking will be open unl No- vember 11 at 11 PM, and meslots will be 10 minutes each. Teachers will communicate with families as to the method (phone or online) that meengs will take place. PROGRESS REPORTS At the Durham District School Board, home and school communication is an essential component of student success. We would like to remind parents, as directed by the Ministry of Education, the way we com- municate a student’s progress to parents/guardians is through the Provincial Report Cards. A Progress Report will be sent home via email on Wednesday, Novem- ber 11th. This report will help parents understand their child’s growth in learning skills and work habits. Future dates for report cards going home this school year are: First Term Report Cards - sent home Wednesday, February 10th, 2021 Second Term Report Cards - sent home Monday, June 28th, 2021 STUDENT LED CONFERENCES In a typical year, Forest View students have led the Progress Report discussions with their parents in collaboration with their teacher. Students shared examples of their work, individual strengths, needs and goals for improvement. This allows our students to be responsible for their learning and helps them to self evaluate their work and to be reflective thinkers. This year our confer- ence will be held online through google meet or via phone conference. Some teachers will still attempt to run student led conferences while others will have more traditional parent/teacher conferences this year. This change is due to the limitations of the virtual/phone conference platforms. We hope that you have signed up for a conference time indicating which day/time would work best for you and your family. Treaties Week—November 2-6 Ontario has designated the first week of November as Treaties Recognition Week to promote ed- ucation and awareness about treaties and treaty relationships. All students, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous are enriched by learning about the histories, contributions and perspectives of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples in Canada. Here at Forest View Public School we honour Treaty relationships we have with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and Chippewas of Georgi- na Island as a school and part of the DDSB. Here at Forest View we will be recognizing Treaties Recognition Week with lessons and activities in individual classrooms. Page 4 FOREST VIEW PUBLIC SCHOOL Page 4 Even in the midst of a pandemic, Remembrance Day remains an extremely important fixture on our calendar here at Forest View PS. Normally, we would host an assembly in our gym which is always well-attended by our community and thor- oughly put together by our staff and students. This year, students will be observing Remembrance Day in their classrooms with the help of their teachers, and Mr. Hart and Mrs. Reid have especially been working hard at getting resources together for all grade levels. If any of our ceremonies can involve community participation (i.e., through Google Meet, etc.), that will be communicated out prior to the day itself. Thank you for your ongo- ing support of this meaningful day. Attendance Tips… Arriving on Time for School Attendance at school is important for student success as lessons taught in the classroom often can- not be replicated through the use of a worksheet at home. Arriving on time for the start of school also has an impact of student achievement. Teachers start lessons right away and arriving late often leads to confusion on the child’s part as they miss important parts of the les- son. We recognize that there are times that being late cannot be avoided but here are some tips that may help: Check weather forecast before bed Select and lay out your clothing for the next day Students set their own alarm clock Prepare lunch and snacks in the evening Place coats, gloves, hats, boots, backpack at front door Have breakfast set out for the morning Post a morning routine checklist; NO TV until everything is completed Allow enough time to walk and meet friends on yard before bell time Getting a drive? — leave enough time to find parking and plan for longer wait times once inclement weather arrives Online resources for students !!!!!!! • Sheigra Dxpedition Report
Sheigra DXpedition Report 12 th to 25 th October 2019 - with Dave Kenny & Alan Pennington This was the 58th DXpedition to Sheigra in Sutherland on the far north western tip of the Scottish mainland, just south of Cape Wrath. DXers made the first long drive up here in 1979, so this we guess, was the 40 th anniversary? And the DXers who first made the trip to Sheigra in 1979 to listen to MW would probably notice little change here today: the single-track road ending in the same cluster of cottages, the cemetery besides the track towards the sea and, beyond that, the machair in front of Sheigra’s sandy bay. And surrounding Sheigra, the wild windswept hillsides, lochans and rocky cliffs pounded by the Atlantic. (You can read reports on our 18 most recent Sheigra DXpeditions on the BDXC website here: http://bdxc.org.uk/articles.html ) Below: Sheigra from the north: Arkle and Ben Stack the mountains on the horizon. Once again we made Murdo’s traditional crofter’s cottage our DX base. From here our long wire Beverage aerials can radiate out across the hillsides towards the sea and the Americas to the west and north west, and eastwards towards Asia, parallel to the old, and now very rough, peat track which continues on north east into the open moors after the tarmac road ends at Sheigra. right: Dave earths the Caribbean Beverage. We were fortunate to experience good MW conditions throughout our fortnight’s stay, thanks to very low solar activity. And on the last couple of days we were treated to some superb conditions with AM signals from the
