Please make the appraisals as uniform as possible, based on the guidelines below. IRS guidelines suggest a “market value”— however, there is NOT a large market for second-hand bicycles hence the values typically are quite low. The IRS suggests that valu- ations be in line with what a person would generally receive at a "rummage sale", "flea market", or "swap meet", i.e., linked to realistic fair market re-sale values.

Bikes hit me kind of like caffeine. Sparks in my bloodstream, voltage tingling my nerve endings, pulse stepping up into a proper rhythm. Stuff like that. That’s what bikes do to me that wool sweaters and herbal tea and comic books don’t. Changes_63175 Trek.indd 1 8/1/08 12:56:29 AM You know what I’m talking about, right? It’s not even riding bikes, necessarily. It’s just the thought of them, the smell, the feel, the idea, the notion, the daydreams and the nightdreams, the looking forward to rides I haven’t taken and looking back on a million rides I have taken. (Man, I wish I’d counted every ride I’ve ever been on. I’d love to know what that number is.) It’s true. I’ve been on, around, and about bikes for more than a few years now, and I’ve had time to refine my bike thinking. I’ve come to a conclusion. Not a big proclamation — more of a traveling thought from a guy breezing by on two wheels. Here it is: I think bikes have a purpose. I don’t think I’d be much for a bike museum. I like art museums, because paintings were painted for the purpose of being looked at and pored over in a museum. That’s what a painting wants to do.

Tire-Side Chat Series The U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame Presents Frank J. Berto The Birth of Dirt Sunday, Feb. 5, 2:00-3:00 PM. USBHOF Headquarters & Museum People argue about the invention of mountain bikes. It’s true that over 100 years ago, folks rode bicycles overland. But, with The Birth of Dirt, Frank Berto makes the case that it was the riders in Marin County, racing modified Schwinns, who began the mountain bike revolution. Innovators like Joe Breeze, Tom Ritchey, Charlie Cunningham, Charlie Kelly, Gary Fisher, and Otis Guy began by modifying old bikes, but quickly began making frames and parts designed for off road riding. The key development for the sport came when these pioneers began selling “mountain bikes.” They couldn’t meet demand, and the bicycle industry scrambled to support the growing sport. The Birth of Dirt documents the people, bicycles, and locale that spawned the greatest revolution in cycling since the invention of geared hubs. Frank Berto is a retired mechanical engineer who was engineering editor for Bicycling Magazine for ten years. His earlier books include Bicycling Magazine’s Complete Guide to Upgrading Your Bike and The Dancing Chain: History and Development of the Derailleur Bicycle. On Feb. 5, Frank will give a talk about his third book, The Birth of Dirt: Origins of Mountain Biking. He will be bring a few copies of The Birth of Dirt and The Dancing Chain for sale and will be available to sign your copies.
