President’s Message continued Rebecca is already hard at work on ideas for the next volunteer workshop in February. As a follow up to our brief in- troduction to succession planning, she is developing a way to plan ahead for volunteers to rotate on a regular basis for the entire tea season and to know when they are scheduled well in advance. This is what currently happens in the kitchen. Each volunteer has a specific day or days on which they are available. If something better comes up, the volunteer just lets Bonnie know and we plan accordingly. It has worked well with that group and should for the ballroom as well. More details will be forthcoming and, as always, we will pay attention to your honest feedback. Enjoy summer and watch out for the mosquitoes!

New Lieutenant Governor for Saskatchewan is Appointed On July 17th, Prime Minister announced the appointment of Russell Mirasty as the new Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. Mr. Mirasty has dedicated much of his life to public service. During his 36-year career in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, he served in various roles across the country. A member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, he notably became the first Indigenous person to command a division of the national police force. In his retirement, Mr. Mirasty has continued to make a difference in his home province of Saskatchewan, working to improve the province’s education system. His appointment follows that of the former Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable W. Thomas Molloy, who passed away earlier this month after a battle with cancer. Her Honour Donna Mirasty was born and raised in Cumberland House and is a Licensed Practical Nurse. Their Honours have been married for 41 years and have 2 children and 2 grandchildren.

Victorian Tea Room (and the Happy Tale of a Bucket of Pickles) The volunteers who volunteer during Tea Weekend, be it for the Ballroom, the kitchen, or the Collectibles Sales, know that we provide a snack for them between 1:30 and 3 p.m. on each day. This past tea (July) I had many enthusiastic and glowing compliments on the pickles we serve and the request for the recipe. First of all, they are made in the House and nothing special is bought to make them. At the beginning of each tea season (March), we take a large bucket and put the following items into it: 4 c of sugar, 2 c of white vinegar, 2 tablespoons of salt, 1 tsp of turmeric, 1 tsp of celery seed and 1 tsp of mustard seed. This is stirred/sloshed until the sugar and salt dissolve. At the end of the tea, the thinly sliced cucumbers left over from preparing the cucumber sandwiches are stirred into the dissolved sugar/vinegar/ spice mixture. The bucket’s lid is secured, and the whole thing goes onto the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. The recipe (obtained from our prior kitchen Bonnie Racz and Elaine Miller at the 2019 coordinator, Leona H.) says it is ready in 3 days, other recipes say two weeks. PCC Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon We continue to add to it each month, and occasionally I will pour the brine from the pickles we purchase for our guests into it. So enthusiastic pickle eaters (and makers), that is the recipe. Enjoy! And a thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who make our Victorian Tea such a success.

Government House It is with great sadness that we recognize the passing of His Honour, The Honourable W. Thomas Molloy, the 22nd Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. His Honour has been an inspiration through his words and work on reconciliation, inclusion and language literacy. You do not have to look far within the halls of Government House to see the impact of his work and his pillar interests. We will continue to honour his legacy through our work and by living his values every day at Government House. Our focus to serve our community has resulted in the creation of new events, programing and exhibits that highlight our connection to ecology, stewardship and creating a space of inclusion. nd Our 2 annual National Indigenous People’s Day hosted a sacred tobacco planting Monique Goffinet Miller and the ceremony at the entrance of the LG’s Office. Special garden tours will highlight these Honourable Ken Cheveldayoff, Minister majestic plants at 10am and 2pm. responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission at the PCC Appreciation This summer, Government House has welcomed new Visitor Experience Hosts who Luncheon for GHHS volunteers have started first-person interpretation tours. We thank the GHHS for our ongoing partnership with refreshing Butler’s Pantry to now be the Vice Regal Coffee Bar, open 7 days a week. There are many new initiatives at GH but it is the ongoing legacy of what we stand for that makes us great. It has been a pleasure working for and with you.

GHHS VOLUNTEERS: The Society’s Invaluable Asset! Summer is here at last! Even though the summer months are shorter, the continuous beauty started in spring still captivates the eyes. That’s an aspect you cannot miss as you come into the House - the beautiful flowers by the ceremonial circle and the entire Edwardian Garden. I hope you take time to enjoy that beauty whenever you come in to volunteer. Some changes in the tea room scheduling: Adrienne Billings, our presenter on succession planning, gave us some clues to think about during her presentation, which we can also apply to the retention of our volunteers. Some of those clues were: “Individuals can leave unexpectedly regardless of retention efforts” and “Succession planning can enhance retention.” We can Back row L-R : Lisa Wang, Iris Sirke, Ronda attest to the truth of volunteers having to leave unexpectedly due to a per- Schmalenberg, Gayle White, Claire Thorseth, sonal or family emergency. In light of the above, in the new year, I helping) and Virginia Selby with Susan Hogarth (middle) will be experimenting new scheduling system with the tea room volunteers. It will give volunteers the opportunity to work on a bi-monthly rotation basis on a task. This system will not hinder those who want to work monthly from doing so, as long as they are willing to volunteer in a different task. For example, if I have you on a bi-monthly rotation as a server and you would like to work monthly, this will be possible if you are willing to work with dessert trolley or any other task on the month you are not on rotation – March: server; April: dessert trolley; May: server; June: Usher; July: server…. Please do not hesitate to email me or call to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about this new rotation system. Allergies, perfumes and scents: The issue of allergies is very prevalent during the spring and summer seasons due to new blossoms from flowers and even the green grass around us. Another source of allergic reaction that we rarely talk about is the use of perfumes and scents and how this could result in a very serious reaction to those who have the sensitivity. We will appreciate it if all volunteers would be aware of this and avoid the use of perfumes and scents when coming to volunteer at the House. I want to thank you all in advance for your understanding regarding this. Finally, the annual Volunteer Appreciation Tea is approaching. Email or call me to RSVP for the event coming up on Sunday August 25th at 2.00pm. I hope to see many of you there because you deserve the appreciation. I thank all GHHS volunteers for your continued commitment. Enjoy summer season and the beauty of the Edwardian Gardens around the House whenever you are at Government House.

Collectibles Sales Our July 1st sale is the biggest of the year. The entire Richard Lake Hall is available that day and with several thousand visitors on the grounds we work hard to fill the space with desirable vintage and collectible items. The weeks before the sale were spent washing, polishing and pricing items. We were fortunate to have a wonderful group of volunteers come in one afternoon to polish up the silver in preparation for the day. Many thanks to Lizhi (Lisa) Wang, Pat Taylor and Barb Binnie for restoring the silver to its brilliant shine. July 1st was a busy and successful day, soon followed by the July 5th and 6th tea and sale. We were happily able to leave the July 1st sale display in place, and the two sales saw a lot of happy customers as they carried off new-found treasures. The following weekend saw our intrepid volunteers at our first off-site sale. For some time we have been wondering if it would be worthwhile to attempt smaller sales associated with local events. When we were invited to participate in the anniversary celebration at Green Falls Landing Seniors’ Residence, we decided to participate by setting up two tables. While sales were modest, we were able to promote Government House and the Victorian Teas, as well as meet with people who were interested in providing items for the Collectible Sales or Black-Tie Auction. We have also just received two large donations of items, so our storage space is full, and we are unable to take in more items for the time being. Many thanks to our generous donors.

Newsletter Committee There is plenty of news packed into this edition ofThe Society Times. I’m sure you are all aware of the sad news of the death of His Honour, the Honourable W. Thomas Molloy. Then soon after that we heard the news of Monique’s promotion from Manager of Government House to being the CEO of the Provincial Capital Commission. Both are losses to our House, but we congratulate Monique on her promotion and hope to still see her at the House on occasion. And just recently, the appointment of a new Lieutenant Governor is big news. Also, for the Kitchen Volunteers, be sure to check out Rebecca’s report on proposed changes in the volunteers’ rotations. We are moving forward with succession planning! Canada Day was a big success at the House as usual. It was interesting this year with the focus on Métis culture, and we noticed there were many visitors totally new to Government House and to all the activities held here. Hopefully these people will attend more events at the House in the future. What a summer – hot and steamy, stormy and rainy, with just enough absolutely perfect days in between. The gardens at the House are green and blooming with life. Rebecca and Jennifer and I look forward to seeing you all at the August Volunteer Appreciation Tea.
