Three colonies of Polybia platycephala (Richards) and one of Polistes versicolor (Olivier) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) were found on plants of banana (Musa spp.) in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. These colonies were at 3.50 m high, under the leaves, which provide shelter from environmental stress. Key Words: Banana, biological control, nest, pest, social wasps. ABSTRACT: The State of Rio Grande do Sul is a major producer of grapes in Brazil, highlighting the Serra Gaúcha as the main producing region. In the pursuit of good quality in grapes it is essential the control of pests, especially insects. This study highlights the incidence of wasps, which cause serious damage at harvest time. This study aimed to characterize the community of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) through faunal analysis and to examine the relationship of these insects with injuries to the grape berries in vineyards of Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul State. Therefore, active search were made in January and February 2014, followed by analysis of frequency, constancy, abundance, dominance and diversity. Ten species of wasps were able to use grape berries as food. The two dominant species were Polybia ignobilis and P. minarum , however, Synoeca cyanea has greater ability to break the intact berries. Other three species, Polistes cavapytiformis , P. versicolor and Brachygastra lecheguana , were also able to break the skin of grapes, but of damaged berries. -

Selectivity of insecticides with and without mineral oil to Brachygastra lecheguana (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), a predator ofTuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) G. L. D. Leite, M. Picango, R. N. C. Dose-response regression limes were estimated for adults of Brachygastra lecheguana (Latreille) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) exposed to the insecticides abamectin, cartap, phentoate, and permethrin with or without 0.5% (v/v) mineral oil. Insects were exposed to treated tomato leaves and mortality was evaluated after24 hours. The estimated LC^s and LC^s forB. lecheguana were compared to estimated LC^s and LC^s previously obtained for larvae ofTuta (= Scrobipalpuloid.es) absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), the main tomato pest in much of South America. The most selective insecticides favor- ing the predator were abamectin and cartap with differential selectivity indexes (LC^ predator, LC^ pest) of 9.5 and 8.6, respectively. The worst differential selectivity was obtained with permethrin. Mineral oil increased selectivity in favor of the predator when in mixture with abamectin, permethrin, and cartap, but had a strong negative effect on phentoate selectivity. Las curvas de regresión para respuesta a dosis fueron estimadas en adultos de Brachygastra lecheguana (Latreille) (Hymenoptera:Vespidae) expuestos a los insecticidas abamectina, cartap, fentoato, y permetrina, con y sin aceite mineral al 0.5% (v/v). Los insectos fueron expuestos a hojas de tomate aplicadas con los insecticidas, y la mortalidad fue evaluada después de 24 horas. Los valores estimados para LC5()s y LC^s para B.lecheguana fueron comparados a los valores LC5()s y LC^s obtenidos previamente para las larvas de Tufa (= Scrobipalpuloides) absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), la princi- pal plaga del tomate en la mayor parte de Sur América. -

Social wasps are common elements in Neotropics, although even elementary data about this taxon in the Amazon region is partially unknown. Therefore the purpose of this work was to increase the knowledge of social wasp fauna at the Jaú National Park. A total of 494 specimens of Polistinae was collected with active search, malaise trap and light trap. Forty-nine species belonging to fourteen genera were recorded. The richest genera were Polybia (14 species), Agelaia (07), Mischocyttarus (05), Apoica (04), Brachygastra (04) and Protopolybia (04); the remaining genera were represented by less than two species. The Jaccard similarity coefficient showed a higher similarity of the Jaú National Park with Ducke Reserve (Manaus, Amazonas). Four species were collected for the first time in Amazonas state Agelaia flavipennis (Ducke), Polybia affinis Du Buysson, Protopolybia nitida (Ducke) and Protopolybia sedula (de Saussure), only in the Jaú National Park, showing the importance of this park for the social wasps preservation in the Amazon region. -

Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document. *** Abstract: Colony defense is a necessary but dangerous task for social insects, and nest defensive behaviors often lead to a premature death of the actor. As an extreme form of colony defense, self- sacrificial behaviors have evolved by kin selection in various social insects. Most self-sacrificial defensive mechanisms occur in response to an acute threat to the colony, but some behaviors are preemptive actions that avert harm to the colony. Self-sacrifice has also been observed as a form of preemptive defense against parasites and pathogens where individuals will abandon their normal colony function and die in self-exile to reduce the risk of infecting nestmates. Here, we provide an overview of the self-destructive defense mechanisms that eusocial insects have evolved and discuss avenues for future research into this form of altruism.
