Sample photographs of avian taken during the field study 76 ABSTRACT The present study was carried out to investigate avian species composition, relative abundance and distribution in Entoto Natural Park and escarpment. It was conducted from July 2009 to March 2010 during wet and dry seasons. The study area was stratified based on vegetation. Four habitat types: forest, farmland, church and eucalypts plantation were considered. Point count method was employed for forest habitat and eucalypts plantation, line transect method was employed for farmland and total count method was used for church areas. Data were collected in the morning (6:30-10:00 a.m.) and late afternoon (3:30-6:00 p.m.) T-test and ANOVA were applied for analysis of the effect of season and habitats on abundance of species. A total of 124 avian species belonging to 14 orders and 44 families were identified in the study area during the wet and dry season surveys. Oromia is the largest National Regional State of Ethiopia. Here we present the first comprehensive checklist of its birds. A total of 804 bird species has been recorded, 601 of them confirmed (443) or assumed (158) to be breeding birds. At least 561 are all-year residents (and 31 more potentially so), at least 73 are Afrotropical migrants and visitors (and 44 more potentially so), and 184 are Palaearctic migrants and visitors (and eight more potentially so). Three species are endemic to Oromia, 18 to Ethiopia and 43 to the Horn of Africa. 170 Oromia bird species are biome restricted: 57 to the Afrotropical Highlands biome, 95 to the Somali-Masai biome, and 18 to the Sudan-Guinea Savanna biome.

ETHIOPIA INTRODUCTION Many people imagine Ethiopia as a flat, famine- ridden desert, but this is far from the case. Ethiopia is remarkably diverse, and unexpectedly lush. This is the ʻroof of Africaʼ, holding the continentʼs largest and most contiguous mountain ranges, and some of its tallest peaks. Cleaving the mountains is the Great Rift Valley, which is dotted with beautiful lakes. Towards the borders of the country lie stretches of dry scrub that are more like the desert most people imagine. But even in this arid savanna, diversity is high, and the desert explodes into verdure during the rainy season. The diversity of Ethiopiaʼs landscapes supports a parallel diversity of birds and other wildlife, and although birds are the focus of our tour, there is much more to the country. Ethiopia is the only country in Africa that was never systematically colonized, and Rueppell’s Robin-Chat, a bird of the Ethiopian mountains.

On our 12-day exploration of this marvellous country, we sampled a great cross-section of these habitats and came away with great sightings and even better memories. We met on the first afternoon at our hotel in Addis Ababa, where the gardens offered the first taste of Ethiopian birding. Tacazze Sunbird, Brown-rumped and Streaky Seedeaters, Dusky Turtle Dove, scores of Hooded Vulture and Yellow-billed Kite, Abyssinian Slaty Flycatcher, Brown Parisoma and Wattled Ibis kept us entertained. After breakfast the next morning, we headed east of the capital towards the town of Debre Birhan. A few birding stops along the way bagged us Blue-winged Goose, African Black Duck, Black Stork, Bearded Vulture, a Lanner Falcon that literally flew between members of the group, unmistakeable Thick-billed Raven, near-endemic White-winged Cliff Chat, Long-billed Pipit and Yellow-crowned Canary. Our main targets for the day, though, were a ways past Debre Birhan to an area called Gemesa Gedel. Here, on steep cliffs overlooking the Great Rift Valley, we had Ankober Serin (only described to science in 1976) and the impressive Gelada Baboon.

    Tanzania, 30 November to 21 December 2020 Thomas Pettersson This tour was organized by Tanzania Birding and Beyond Safaris and unfortunately, I was the only participant as my friend was prevented from going as was planned. The flights from Stockholm via Addis Ababa to Dar es Salaam and back with Ethiopian Airlines were uneventful. The only differences from my previous flights were that wearing face masks on the aircrafts was mandatory, and recommended at the airports, and that they checked my body temperature at both arrival and departure. I am not sure what the consequences would have been in case of fever. You must also complete a health declaration both for transfer and arrival. The outbound flight from Stockholm to Addis Ababa was about half empty and on the return perhaps only 25 % of the seats were occupied, which meant good nights sleep on three seats both ways. The flights between Addis Ababa and Dar es Salaam were fully booked both ways. The domestic flights with Coastal Aviation from Dar es Salaam via Zanzibar (Unguja) to Pemba and on to Tanga were also smooth, with the same regulations as above. The aircrafts were painfully small though, 12 seats. Not much space for legs and hand luggage. On the other hand, the distances are short. All in all, the tour was a big success. Accommodation was generally good, although basic at some places, but nothing to complain about. Food was excellent and plentiful, and I had no issues with the stomach. The drivers and the guides were excellent, in particular the outstanding Anthony, who guided most of the tour.

ULTIMATE KENYA 1 – 20 / 25 APRIL 2017 LEADER: DANI LOPEZ-VELASCO Kenya lived up to its reputation of being one of the most diverse birding destinations on our planet. Once again, our Ultimate Kenya recorded a mind-boggling total of more than 750 species. This was despite the fact that we were prioritizing Kenyan specialities (a task in which we were extremely successful) rather than going all out for a huge list! 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Ultimate Kenya www.birdquest-tours.com The first leg of our epic adventure saw us focusing on the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest where the birding is tough but the rewards are great. Over the course of the two and a half days our talented local guide helped us find all of the main specialities, with the exception of the difficult Clarke’s Weavers, which were presumably on their recently discovered breeding grounds in marshes to the north. Crested Guineafowl and Northern Carmine Bee-eater. We spent much time creeping along sandy tracks, gradually finding our targets one by one. We succeeded in getting great views of a number of skulkers, including a rather showy East Coast Akalat on our last afternoon, some reclusive Eastern Bearded Scrub Robins, a very obliging Red-tailed Ant Thrush and skulking Fischer’s and Tiny Greenbuls. Once in the Brachystegia we kept our eyes and ears open for roving flocks of flock-leader Retz’s and Chestnut-fronted Helmet Shrikes, and with these we found awkward Mombasa Woodpeckers and a single Green-backed Woodpecker, and a variety of smaller species including Black-headed Apalis, Green Barbet, Eastern Green Tinkerbird, dainty Little Yellow Flycatchers, Forest Batis, Pale Batis, cracking little Amani and Plain-backed Sunbirds and Dark-backed Weaver.

    ETHIOPIA OCTOBER 30 - NOVEMBER 17, 2020 Comprising much of the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia is a poorly known but very beautiful country unlike any other part of the continent. On this new tour, you will discover that Ethiopia is culturally, scenically, and historically unique, and possesses a treasure trove of natural history wonders. Ethiopia, once synonymous with famine and desert, is actually dominated by a lush, fertile highland plateau occasionally referred to as “The Roof of Africa.” Ethiopia is an ancient land, home to lush highland forests, vast savannas, acacia thorn-scrub, the magnificent Ethiopian Rift Valley, and some of Africa’s highest mountains. Of the more than 850 species of birds recorded in the country, 37 either are endemic or near- endemic (the second largest total for any African country), among which are a number of captivating range-restricted species such as Rouget’s Rail, Prince Ruspoli’s Turaco, and the peculiar Stresemann’s Bush-Crow. In addition to its tremendous birdlife, Ethiopia hosts an impressive list of mammals including such remarkable endemics as Gelada Baboon, Mountain Nyala, and Ethiopian (Simien) Wolf. Our itinerary is designed with birds and other wildlife in mind, yet also offers a look at a broad slice of the country and its fascinating landscapes. We expect to encounter 400-500 bird species, and will make a special effort to locate as many of the endemic birds and mammals as possible. Enhancing the allure, this trip will operate in the boreal autumn when the diversity of the resident avifauna is augmented by the presence of large numbers of Palearctic migrants.

Received 27 April, 2018; Accepted 14 June, 2018 A study was conducted in Menz-Guassa Community Conservation Area (MGCCA) from November 2016 to March 2017, to assess the diversity, distribution and habitat association of birds. Three habitat types including forest, grassland, and moorland habitats were identified based on their vegetation composition. Point count method in Eucalyptus and Juniperus forest, and line transect technique in grassland and moorland habitats were used to study avian diversity. Data were collected in the early morning (6:30 to 9:30 a.m.) and late afternoon (4:30 to 7:00 p.m.) when the activities of birds were prominent. Species diversity and evenness was given in terms of Shannon-Weaver diversity Index. A total of 86 avian species belonging to 14 orders and 35 families were identified. The identified areas are rich with seven (8.14%) endemic bird species namely; abyssinian catbird (Parophasma galinieri), abyssinian longclaw (Macronyx flavicollis), ankober serin (Crithagra ankoberensis), black-headed siskin (Serinus nigriceps), blue-winged goose (Cyanochen cyanoptera), moorland francolin (Scleroptlia psilolaema), spot-breasted plover (Vanellus melanocephalus), and five (5.81%) near-endemic bird species including rouget's rail (Rougetius rougetii), wattled ibis (Bostrychia carunculata), white-collared pigeon (Columba albitorques), thick-billed raven (Corvus crassirostris), and white-winged cliff chat (Myrmecocichla semirufa).
