News ABRIL Expediciones de Ciencia Ciudadana Malpelo Foundation and Other Marine Ecosystems initiated the Citizen Science expeditions to the SFF Malpelo Island aboard the Ferox Ship, our rst trip was made from March 1 to 11. In our dives, we surround ourselves with a notorious and fascinating marine and terrestrial biodiversity:

Sandra Bessudo -Malpelo and Other Marine Ecosystems Foundation From April 6 to 15, we made our second Citizen Science trip to SFF Malpelo. During this expedition, we found ourselves with a devastating panorama:

"Again the shermen of Ecuador and Costa Rica are illegally entering the protected area, violating our sovereignty. We found, along with ocials of National Natural Parks, anchors on the coral, shing lines (longline) with several dead hammerhead sharks (endangered species), we found several Ecuadorian shing boats, directly aecting populations of shes like groupers, snappers, barracudas, residents of the place and reproducers of the area ". Words exposed by our Executive Director Sandra Bessudo Crew, Citizen Science trip April 2019 Illegal Fishing

Olivier Borde - Malpelo and Other Marine Ecosystems Foundation This illegal activity was reported directly to the Colombian National Navy, who initiated the development of maritime control operations, stopping six (6) Ecuadorian-agged boats and capturing 27 people, 21 Ecuadorians and 6 Colombians, realizing illegal shing activities in 18 nautical miles southeast of the Malpelo Island. Those men were carrying more than one ton of tuna and grouper. This looting of the SFF Malpelo was reported by several Colombian media.

27 captured people and boat trailer – National Navy of Colombia We will continue working jointly and permanently on research and monitoring programs, as well as prevention, control and surveillance, to maintain the state of conservation of this Marine Protected Area and reduce illegal shing. Yuruparí Expedition Acandí Expedition April 8 to 14 April 23 to 26 This is the rst Yurupari scienti c expedition 2019, realized in the DMI YURUPARI-MALPELO, a pro tected area next to the SFF MALPELO. This is a joint project with Bioethos Foundation, Malpelo Foundation with the participation of our researchers (Felipe Ladino and Natalia Vélez, ecologists) and Cebaco Bay Sport shing.

This expedition starts with a cruise on the Caribbean Colombian Coast, until reaching the department of Chocó. The aim of this trip was to expand the scienti c knowledge about the sea turtles and to emphasize the importance of the coastal communities in their protection The Malpelo Foundation, under the direction of Sandra Bessudo, decided to join the work of the Community ATLANTIS VI Boat in Panama / Natalia Vélez Council of Acandí (Cocomasur), Tortugas del Mar They sailed from Panama with the aim of tagging Foundation and National Natural Parks of Colombia, in bill shes, seeking to preserve the marine fauna of this order to study and conserve one of the largest remote place in Colombia. endangered sea turtle species, the leatherback Sea Turtle or “Caná”, as they call it in the community. Likewise, illegal shing boats from Costa Rica were spotted in this protected area. These vessels were reported to the maritime guard, but shermen have learned how to hide. The National Navy of Colombia keep doing control and surveillance patrols.

Leatherback sea turtle / Callie Veelenturf Acandí is one of the beaches with the highest nesting of this species. The sighting happens at night, when the female removes with its rear ns the sand to deposit their eggs at about 40 or 60 cm deep. The work Illegal shing boat from Costa Rica / Felipe Ladino of the community is to safeguard the eggs in a safe area until they hatch, approximately during 60 days and thus safeguard these new ospring. - www.fundacionmalpelo.org - MARCH Encounter with the HEROES OF THE SEA In 2019, NAUSICAÁ chose to develop the theme Heroes of the Sea, in order to highlight those who discover, study, experience, protect, take us and are engage with the ocean, whether heroes whose exploits have crossed time or simply everyday heroes, and all citizens of the ocean.

Sandra Bessudo, godmother of the exhibition "Voyage en Haute Mer" presented in NAUSICAÁ, inaugurated the series of conferences as well as Laurent Ballesta, biologist and underwater photographer who was the second guest.

Monaco Blue Initiative 2019 The 10th version of Monaco Blue Initiative (MBI) presided by Prince Albert II of Monaco of HSH, realized on March 25 at the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, is a debate platform co-organized by the Oceanographic Institute Albert I, Prince of Monaco Foundation and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

The sessions covered three crucial issues for the future of Marine Protected Areas MPAs:

-How to continue developing MPAs collectively while ensuring their eectiveness?

-How do coherent networks of MPAs in order to contribute the protection of species?

-What is the next step after evaluating ecosystem services and how can they be integrated into blue economic development?

Topics related to the conservation of the oceans, the requirements and bene ts of Marine Protected Areas were discussed, seeking concrete cooperation actions between countries and dierent invited actors

FEBRUARY Symposium of Technological Tools The presentation and training of a public platform for the monitoring of shing vessels in Colombia was made. On February 20, through the collaboration of Pristine Seas - NatGeo, the Malpelo Foundation managed in Bogota the realization of the Fishing Table, coordinated by the Colombian Commission of the Ocean (CCO) together with 17 institutions of the national government, representatives of other NGOs united with Global Fishing Watch (GFW). "Online map is a powerful tool for the governance of the oceans, which allows to consult or download information and research shing activities globally in almost real time and free of charge. The platform promotes scienti c knowledge to combat illegal shing, not declared and unregulated and to promote sustainable management” GFW

Heroes to the Animal Rescue It seeks to unite those who want to care for and conserve the planet, with those who dedicate their lives to preserve it.

The new season of Heroes to the Animal Rescue premiere episode aired last Saturday, February 2 by Señal Colombia (National TV channel), where it was exposed the work of Sandra Bessudo and other researchers in one of the Malpelo Island key species, hammerhead sharks, working in cooperation with various government institutions, national universities and international alliances.

All the projects realized by her team aim to broaden the understanding of the population behavior of sharks, their migratory dynamics and eventually nding nursery areas in the Colombian Paci c that can be protected.Coproducida por
