Jan Clemons Warwickshire Amphibian & Reptile Team (WART) THE WARWICKSHIRE ADDER HUNT • In 2004 WART became the lead partner for the adder in the Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull Local Biodiversity Action Plan. THE WARWICKSHIRE ADDER HUNT • In 2004 WART became the lead partner for the adder in the Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull Local Biodiversity Action Plan. • The adder then was acknowledged as rare in the Midlands and listed as a priority species on the current UK Biodiversity Action plan. WART’s first step was to determine the current distribution and status in the region. THE WARWICKSHIRE ADDER HUNT • In 2004 WART became the lead partner for the adder in the Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull Local Biodiversity Action Plan. • The adder is acknowledged as rare in the Midlands and is listed as a priority species on the UK Biodiversity Action plan. Our first step was to determine the current distribution and status in the region. • There were 24 sites where adders had been recorded so our first step was to go back to these sites to have another look. What did we find out? • Half the sites had gone due to urban development and unsympathetic agricultural practices. • On the remaining 12 sites we placed arrays of refugia (tins, onduline, roofing felt) which were checked yearly for 3 years. 6 of these sites turned up grass snakes. • After 3 years we narrowed the search down to 5 sites which seemed to have habitats suitable for adders and had recent records from the 1990’s Kenilworth Common • Best reptile assemblage site in the WART Reserve county.

MORGAN WATKIN County Health Department, Abet ystwyth Received7.x.66 1.INTRODUCTION THEwestern limits of Worcestershire lie about thirty miles to the east of Offa's Dyke—the traditional boundary between England and Wales —yet Evesham in the south-eastern part of the county is described by its abbot in a petition to Thomas Cromwell in as situated within the Principality of Wales. The Star Chamber Proceedings (No. 4) in the reign of Henry VII refer to the bridge of stone at Worcester by which the king's subjects crossed from England into Wales and the demonstrations against the Act of 1430 regulating navigation along the Severn were supported by large numbers of Welshmen living on the right bank of the river in Worcestershire. The object of the investigation is to ascertain whether significant genetic differences exist in the population of Worcestershire and south-western Warwickshire and, in particular, whether the people living west of the Severn are more akin to the Welsh than to the English. The possibility of determining, on genetic grounds, whether the Anglo- Saxon penetration was strongest from the south up the rivers Severn and Avon, or across the watershed from the Trent in the north, or from the east through Oxfordshire and Warwickshire is also explored. 2. THECOUNTY Worcestershirehas fluctuated in size over the centuries and Stratford-on-Avon came for a period under its jurisdiction while Shipston-on-Stour, now a Warwickshire township, remained in one of the detached portions of Worcestershire until the turn of the present century.

WARWICKSHIRE, COVENTRY & SOLIHULL SUB-REGIONAL GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE STRATEGY ANNEXE A: LOCAL BIODIVERSITY OFFSETTING STRATEGY ANNEXE A: LOCAL BIODIVERSITY OFFSETTING STRATEGY Contents xxx 1 ANNEXE A: LOCAL BIODIVERSITY OFFSETTING STRATEGY Introduction and Policy Context The Business and Biodiversity Offsets Programme1 defines biodiversity offsets as: “measurable conservation outcomes resulting from actions designed to compensate for significant residual adverse biodiversity impacts arising from project development and persisting after appropriate prevention and mitigation measures have been implemented”. The rationale for the use of biodiversity offsetting as a means of enacting conservation is set out within recent publications such as Sir John Lawton’s review of England’s wildlife sites and ecological network, Making Space for Nature2 and in the Natural Environment White Paper3. In the Natural Environment White Paper, Defra announced that it would establish a new voluntary approach to offsetting and would test this in a number of pilot areas. In association with Natural England, Defra has produced accompanying introductory and technical documents to assist pilots in their delivery of Biodiversity Offsetting4. Biodiversity Offsetting is considered as a mechanism to enact National Planning Policy Framework (2012) sustainable development principles involving “seeking positive improvements in the quality of the built, natural and historic environment, as well as in people’s quality of life, including (but not limited to): making it easier for jobs to be created in cities, towns and villages; moving from a net loss of bio-diversity to achieving net gains for nature;5 replacing poor design with better design; improving the conditions in which people live, work, travel and take leisure; and widening the choice of high quality homes.” This net gain approach is being promoted in all the sub-regional local development documents and this Annexe describes the sub-regional approach to achieve theses and NPPF’s principles for plan-making.

Coventry and Warwickshire Lep Getting Building Fund
COVENTRY AND WARWICKSHIRE LEP GETTING BUILDING FUND The Government is making £900 million available through the new Getting Building Fund (GBF) for investment in local, shovel-ready infrastructure projects to stimulate jobs and support economic recovery across the country. The Coventry and Warwickshire LEP has been allocated £8.1m from the GBF for a wide-ranging package of projects that will deliver a much-needed boost to the economy of Warwickshire.1 The funded projects are expected to build on previous government investments and support the area to capitalise on future opportunities, including arts projects related to the City of Culture and projects in Nuneaton which will complement the upcoming the Town Deal. The package is a broad mix including transport, skills, town centre regeneration, enterprise support and housing projects. The projects will support green growth by delivering new and improved cycleways, retrofitting, and improving green spaces and public realm.
