Bill Russell’s Motivation to be a Basketball Star in Bill Russell’s Go Up for Glory. Yogyakarta: English Language Education Study Program, Department of Language and Arts Education, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Sanata Dharma University. This study discusses a novel written by Bill Russell entitled Go Up for Glory. It pictures an African-American, named Bill Russell, who is trying to prove the white American that people in his ethnic have talent and can be a leader. Being a basketball star is one of ways he can prove. This study analyzes Bill Russell’s motivation to be a basketball star. There are two formulated problems. They are: (1) How is Bill Russell, the main character, described? (2) What are Bill Russell’s motivations to be a basketball star? A library study was applied to gather the data. The primary source was gained from the novel. The secondary sources were books of psychology and literature, and the internet sources. Theories of character and characterization were used to
