Swimming Queensland is the peak body for the administration of swimming activities in Queensland. It conducts, encourages, promotes, advances, controls and administers swimming activities throughout the State through a number of distinct functions, including:

2007 Zoggs Queensland Swimming Championships Officials & Volunteers

The merry band of officials & volunteers who ensured the success of the 2007 Queensland Swimming Championships

We have pleasure in submitting this report to members on Swimming Queensland’s activities for the 2007/8 financial year.

2008 Olympic & Paralympic Trials

The exceptional depth of our world class swimmers was underlined with the announcement of the 2008 Australian Olympic Team. A total of 22 Queensland swimmers – just over half the team - were selected for the Beijing Olympics following a dominant performance by Queenslanders at the selection trials, where our team won both the women’s and the men’s divisions. Similarly, six of the 10 coaching positions on the Australian team were claimed by Queensland coaches. Subsequently, Melissa Gorman was added to the team after she qualified for the 10km women’s open water event at the 2008 World Open Water Swimming Championships.

The most noteworthy performances, amongst many, by Queenslanders at the trials were delivered by Libby Trickett, Stephanie Rice, and Emily Seebohm. Stephanie’s breathtaking swims in the women’s 200m Individual Medley and 400m Individual Medley both produced world records, while Libby, in winning the women’s 50m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle, became the first woman to officially break 24 seconds and 53 seconds, respectively, in those events. Emily, at just 15 years of age, claimed the world record in the women’s 50m Backstroke. Commonwealth records were also broken by Cate Campbell, Bronte Barratt, Linda Mackenzie, Meagen Nay, Brenton Rickard and Nick D’Arcy.

One of Queensland’s great servants of swimming, Julie McGinley, has been selected as the sole Australian to officiate at the open water component of the swimming competition in Beijing.

Eight Queensland swimmers were selected on the Paralympic Swim Team, along with coach Glenn Baker. At the trials, Annabelle Williams and Michael Anderson set new multi-disability world records in the women’s 50m Butterfly and men’s 50m Backstroke.

2008 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships

The 2008 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships served as the selection trials for the 2008 World Open Water Championships in Seville, Spain. Alexandra Bagley and Melissa Gorman won the women’s 5 km and 10 km events, respectively, while former world champions, Brendan Capell and Josh Santacaterina, produced a nail biting finish in the marathon 25 km men’s event, with Brendan edging out Josh by a mere .28 of a second. These four swimmers were joined by Kate Brookes-Peterson, Brooke Fletcher and coach Don Watson-Brown on the Australian team selected for the World Championships.

2008 World Open Water Swimming Championships

As alluded to above, Melissa Gorman’s achievement in finishing ahead of all other Oceania swimmers earned her a berth on the 2008 Olympic team. Top 10 placings at the Championships were achieved by Kate Brookes-Peterson and Brendan Capell.

2008 World Short Course Championships

Kylie Palmer was Queensland’s most successful swimmer at the 2008 World Short Course Championships in Manchester. Kylie won the women’s 200m Freestyle and 400m Freestyle and finished runner-up in the women’s 800m Freestyle. She set Commonwealth records in

3 the 400m and 800m events. Nicholas Sprenger was a member of the gold medal winning Australian men’s team in the 4 x 200m Freestyle relay.

2007 INAS-FID World Championships

Nerice Holland and Tamleh Wilson represented Australia at the 2007 INAS-FID World Championships in Belgium. INAS-FID is the international federation for sport for people with an intellectual disability.

The daughter of SQ Hall of Fame Inductee, Stephen Holland, Nerice won a total of seven gold medals at the Championships, two of which were in individual events. Tamleh’s tally of gold medals was eight, which included three wins in individual events.

2008 Australian Age Championships

The 2008 Australian Age Championships showcased the large contingent of promising Queensland youngsters. Once again, Queensland won the W.B. Phillips Trophy for Premier State by a wide margin, making the sequence of wins nine in a row. Pro-Ma Miami topped the club point score, with St Peter’s Western taking out second place.

Australian Age individual records were broken by Brittany Elmslie, Emily Seebohm, Maddison Bruce, Zach Featherstone, and Jayden Hadler. Jayden won six events, and Emily, five.

In the open water section of the Championships, 10 of the 18 events were won by Queenslanders, with George O’Brien winning gold in two events.

In total, 71 gold medals were won by 39 Queensland swimmers in the pool and open water competitions.

2007 Zoggs Queensland Championships

The 2007 Zoggs Queensland Championships were bigger and better than ever with the transfer of the relay events to the first day of competition. 6,120 nominations were received for individual events from 1,503 swimmers representing 169 clubs/teams.

4 Jessicah Schipper tied with Christian Sprenger for the Swimmer of the Meet award. Other major award winners were Jayden Hadler (Age Group Swimmer of the Meet), Nerice Holland (SWD Swimmer of the Meet), and Regan Leong (Country Swimmer of the Meet). Brothers won the President’s Trophy as champion club.

Athlete and Coach Development

Swimming Queensland’s various athlete development squads catered for 430 swimmers across the State. Squad activities included participating in the Sydney leg of the FINA World Cup, the Great Barrier Reef meet in Mackay, the AIS Invitational meet in Canberra, and a dual meet against Victoria in Melbourne. Several clinics and camps were also conducted at various locations around Queensland, including the Gold Coast, Townsville, Yeppoon, Caloundra, Toowoomba, Warwick and Brisbane. Every one of these activities also gave coaches the opportunity to gain vital development experience.

Coach education courses were attended by 420 participants, as follows: Green Licence, 297; Bronze Licence, 57; Silver Licence, 39; and SWD, 27. There were also 10 coaches from six different regions in the Coach Mentor Program jointly conducted with the Australian Swim Teachers and Coaches Association (Qld).

A special forum for male swimmers was run as the prelude to the Queensland Championships at Chandler. Called Boys2Men, the forum featured Steve Holland, Duncan Armstrong, Brenton Rickard, Peter Wells and Simon Black. Three hundred people attended.

Technical Official Development

The Mentor Official Program conducted each year during the Queensland Championships provided invaluable pool deck experience to four Technical Officials from Far North Queensland (2), North Queensland and the Gold Coast.

Assessor and presenter training delivered to 25 Technical Officials towards the end of the year will be put to good use in 2008/9 when formal assessments of officials will be undertaken in all regions.

The annual Referees’ forum was once again well attended, with 29 Referees in attendance. All regions were represented. An awareness and education seminar held at Chandler passed on vital information to 20 club officials.

Membership Development

Just over 3,000 Queensland junior swimmers qualified for the Australian Junior Excellence Program (JX), which was expanded to include open water swimming and to cater for swimmers with a disability. Special forums for JX qualifiers, and their parents and coaches, were held at Townsville, Rockhampton, Noosa and Brisbane. Presenters at the forums included Jessicah Schipper, Andrew Mewing, Ashley Callus, Bronte Barratt, Kylie Palmer, Alexandra Bagley, and Josh Santacaterina.

New initiatives included participation ribbons and a fun book, both featuring SQ’s mascots, Webster and Tilley. Nearly 20,000 ribbons were distributed to clubs for use at swim meets and club championships to recognise and encourage participation. Clubs also received 15,000 fun books for their junior members.

Zoggs clinics were delivered at Alpha, Clermont, Muttaburra, Dysart, Baralaba, Townsville, Moura, Goondiwindi, Roma, St George, Allora, Hervey Bay, Gladstone, Mt Morgan, Proserpine, and the Gold Coast. GO Club forums were conducted at Gladstone,

5 Rockhampton, Gympie and Brisbane. Clinics for swimmers with a disability were held at Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns and Mackay.

In addition, over 6,000 kits were distributed to new members, and 1,000 Swim Star caps provided to clubs for presentation to children who best exemplify each club’s values.

Awards

Decades of dedicated service to sport, and in particular to swimming, by Mrs Margaret Pugh was recognised in The Queen’s Birthday 2007 Honours List through the award of the Order of Australia to her and at the Sport Federation of Queensland annual dinner, where she received the highly prized Service to Sport Award.

The Swimming Queensland Hall of Fame was enriched through the induction of Dr Brendan Burkett, Samantha Riley and Arthur Cusack (posthumously), while due recognition was given to Geoff Wright (FNQ), Marvyen Whittaker (DD), Paddy Steele (WB), Norm Fyffe (GC), Wendy Ryan (CQ), and Gloria Williams (BSA) for their service to swimming by the presentation to them of the Swimming Queensland Award of Excellence.

Long, meritorious service to the sport by Julie McGinley, David Urquhart and Laurie Lawrence earned them the honour of Life Membership of Swimming Queensland.

Swimming Australia’s Swimmer of the Year award went to Libby Lenton, while Jessicah Schipper received both the Telstra’s Swimmers’ Swimmer of the Year Award and Telstra’s People’s Choice Award. Stephan Widmer was named Telstra Coach of the Year for the third year in succession.

Acknowledgements

Swimming Queensland’s long-standing sponsors, Zoggs, Heritage Building Society and Central Apartments, were joined late in the year by new sponsors, McDonald’s and Retravision. The remarkable success being enjoyed by the sport of swimming in Queensland could not have occurred - and cannot be sustained - without the very valuable financial and other support provided by our sponsors and by the Queensland Government. To all concerned, we express the deep appreciation of Swimming Queensland.

We also thank the huge number of people who volunteer their time and energy to assist swimming across Queensland in a multitude of ways. The importance of your contribution is both profound and crucial.

VALE In 2007-2008, Swimming Queensland lost members Lionel Hogg CBE (SQ Life-Member), and John Allen (SQ Official) each of whom made significant contributions to our sport.

The sympathy of Swimming Queensland goes to the families and friends of those no longer with us.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I submit the Treasurer’s Annual Report, together with the audited Annual Financial Report, for the year ended 30 April 2008.

A deficit of $4,075 was recorded by the Association in the 2007/8 financial year. Total Accumulated Funds are now $482,115.

Grants income declined by nearly $54,000 largely because of less funding being received from the Queensland Government and Swimming Australia. The shortfall in Grants income was off-set by the acquisition of new sponsors, McDonald’s and Retravision, which resulted in sponsorship revenue increasing by just over $58,000. Sponsorship revenue will increase further in 2008/9 due to those new arrangements.

The only noteworthy variation from last year’s report on the expenditure side relates to Membership Development, which increased from $104,093 to $155,846. This change reflects the application of the increased sponsorship income in this particular area of Swimming Queensland’s extensive development activities. The amount spent on Membership Development is in addition to the $240,902 invested on Athlete Development. The success of Swimming Queensland’s development programs over recent years is, I believe, directly reflected in the number of Queensland swimmers selected on the Australian Olympic Team for Beijing.

I am pleased to report that the Association’s financial profile remains very healthy.

I take this opportunity to acknowledge the very able assistance I received throughout the year from my Finance Sub-Committee colleagues, Margaret Pugh OAM, Suellen Hardie, Dr Simon Hooton and Joe Dixon, and to Swimming Queensland’s Finance Officer, Joanne Phillips.

It is with pleasure that I present this report regarding the progress of the Association over the last twelve months. The members of the Management Committee, members of various committees, together with a whole range of technical and voluntary helpers have ensured the advancement of our sport within the Brisbane Region.

At the Olympic Trials in Sydney this year 5 World, 14 Commonwealth, 16 Australian, 8 Australian Open Allcomers, 1 Australian Club, 9 Australian Age & 8 Australian Allcomers Age Records were broken, and this was just the Queenslanders’ tally. In this wonderful display of world class swimming, to have 17 of our swimmers selected for the Olympic Games Team is the greatest example anyone could offer as to the strength of Brisbane Swimming.

Congratulations to all the Brisbane Swimmers who were selected on the Australian Team for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing: Bronte Barratt , Leith Brodie, Ashley Callus, Cate Campbell, Alicia Coutts, Alice Mills (AIS), Meagan Nay, Kylie Palmer, Stephanie Rice, Brenton Rickard (AIS), Jessicah Schipper, Melanie Schlanger, Emily Seebohm, Christian Sprenger, Nicholas Sprenger, Lisbeth Trickett, Tarnee White (AIS) and congratulations also to Melissa Gorman, who will now compete in the first ever 10km Open Water Olympic Event. Team Coaches - Michael Bohl, Matt Brown, Stephan Widmer and Ken Wood.

The Brisbane Premiership Divisional Competition was impossibly close this year, with sometimes 1 point between clubs, and in the 2nd division we had a tie for second place. The 2007/2008 Champion Clubs were: Premier Division, Albany Creek - John Rodgers, First Division, Acacia Bayside - Shaun Crow, Second Division, East Brisbane - Mark Lorrimer, Third Division, Marist Ashgrove - Mathew McMahon, Fourth Division, Southern Cross - Stephen Hadler, Fifth Division, Newmarket Racers - Robert Miller.

The Brisbane Swimming Association Presentation Day held at the City Hall on Sunday the 20th April was extremely successful, with all of the Award Winners presented with their trophies. The Rising Star this year was won by Jayden Hadler, The President’s Award went to Ridge Grimsey & Swimmer of the Stroke awards were: Backstroke - Michelle Gianotti, Breaststroke - Liam Kinneally, Butterfly - Jayden Hadler, Freestyle - Darthea Clydsdale & Individual Medley - Anastasia Osadchuk.

Teams travelled to Bundaberg, Pittsworth, Warwick & Caloundra this year and all performed well, Relay teams at the State Titles won most of the events and set 2 record times. A McDonald’s clinic was held at Dunlop Park Pool, 78 swimmers attended with 5 top coaches to ensure they gained the maximum from the clinic.

Coaches have been regarded as a vital part of our structure as they improve the quality of our swimmers, but this year as we have the Ipswich area clubs as an integral part of our region, the local Ipswich ex-Olympians, now coaches have themselves created a squad to have a swimmer from Ipswich in the Olympic Team by 2012. This is the spirit that forges Champions and strong regions.

It is a pleasant responsibility to thank all those who have supported the Association throughout the season. Without their assistance nothing would have been achieved. Special thanks to Brisbane McDonald’s Family Restaurants, Vorgee, the Management Committee, BSA Officials & Volunteers, Swimming Queensland for their patience and assistance, the coaches, clubs and swimming families who come down to timekeep for us - Thank You All.

It does not seem a year since my last report, so it shows that our Swimming year has passed very quickly as a result of the Region’s involvement with all the Clubs and their important undertakings. The season saw the Regional Officials officiate in over 30 meets for the season. This season has seen an increase in the demand for officials at school level. Diane Daw and her merry band have continually aided and attended the many meets requiring the Region, to supply its equipment for club, school and Regional meets. Diane has trained and upgraded many parents wanting to learn the aspects of Team Manager and Meet Manager. As seen by the many meets attended there is the essential need to train more members from all clubs so they may be efficient in this area and assist Diane at their annual Carnival in the 2008-09 season.

Mandy Savage has continually supported the clubs and Region assembling meets into Team Manager format and distributing the information to Clubs not only in Qld, Mandy has made sure that the Northern N.S.W. Clubs are invited to the many meets. The Region now has a Club in Western Australia that attends the Regions Winter Short Course Meet and looks forward to returning each season. Thanks must also go Mandy who keeps the Gold Coast Regional Web Site up to date with all relevant information.

To Karen Macleod the Chief referee, of the Gold Coast and Swimming Qld and now a FINA referee has ensured all meets on the Gold Coast, either at club, Regional and school level always have officials to officiate at these meets. Karen too like Diane continues to train parents and volunteers the art of officiating. Karen’s request for the 2008-09 season is that more parents learn some aspect of officiating as many of the Region’s personnel have retired or moved on. The new season will require an increase in parent participation in this vital area, which without officials the meets cannot be run and times accredited to swimmers.

Thank you to Norm Fyffe, Maree Oberg, Guy Bagot, Norma Hanby, John Dove, Sharon Wicking, who gave up many week-ends to ensure the successful proceedings off all meets.

Norm Fyffe assisted the Region for the first part of the year in being our unofficial Treasurer. Thank you to Norm who ensured bills were paid and accounts in order. Michelle Sabotic then took over the Treasurer position, maintaining the high standard of book-keeping that Region is fortunate to benefit from. Thank you to Wayne Hatchman who has assisted the Region in numerous ways in the position of Vice President.

Once again the Region had the benefit of our superb sponsor McDonald’s who donated a McDonald’s Tent, sponsored all Regional Meets, supplied Regional Swimming Caps, medals, drink bottles and towels to the competitors in the Region. This sponsorship being in the value of nearly $10,000, for which the Region is truly grateful. This is our fourth Season with McDonald’s and they continue to support the Region in a highly esteemed fashion. The Region thanks Gold Coast McDonald’s for their continued support.

The Region’s Patron Peta-Kaye Croft continued her role ensuring all our Regional Meet Programs are printed and any other printing the Region may require during the season done. This too ensured money was put back into the Region for our swimmers. This season again, the Region was able to give prize money to the various winning clubs at the Gold Coast Championships. With the formula worked out by the committee, monies were returned to some of the smaller clubs, thus boosting their finances.

The Region aided the Deaf Society, in organising the Swimming Program for the Australian Deaf Society. Media releases, outings to Dreamworld and a long day’s competition were all arranged and administered by the Region.

As the season drew to a close, an extremely sad event occurred with the tragic death of our wonderful Secretary Diane Daw’s son Daniel, in a horrific car accident. Our thoughts and prayers have continued each day since this event, hoping that it will give some solace to Diane and her family.

The season 2008-2009 will be an Olympic year. The Region congratulates Andrew Lauterstein from Southport on his Olympic selection and wishes Andrew and the Australian Team, all the best in Beijing. The season will once again be a busy one for the Region, the swimmers and their families.

It is with pleasure that I present this report regarding the progress of the Association over the past twelve months. The members of the Management Committee, members of various sub committees, together with a whole range of technical, professional and voluntary providers have assisted to guide and influence swimming on the Downs, working tirelessly for this great sport.

Development The weekend of 27- 28th October was set aside for the Regions Development program. With help from Swimming Queensland, Development Head Coach Tim Taylor and our Development Coordinator Jenny Veivers, the Region was able to conduct a variety of education and support programs for the Coaches, swimmers, officials and administrators throughout the Downs. This season the program was very well organized and the feedback has been positive. Also a new initiative was introduced with a series of stroke clinics which were conducted throughout the season. These clinics proved very popular and were conducted by coaches from the Darling Downs clubs. However as with any Development programs there is room for improvement and therefore the Association is keen to run it again next season implementing helpful ideas gained from feedback. This is an evolving process, but one which is important to swimming on the Downs, continuing to assist our swimmers to the “next level”. The development of clearly defined pathway opportunities leading into the State program is important and has a positive impact on swimmers, coaches and parents.

The other development for our swimmers was the National JX program. This had the desired effect of swimmers setting a goal to be in this program. The majority of our Regions development programs involve the swimmers being in the JX program. For many of the swimmers this is an achievable goal.

On behalf of the Association we wish to thank Tim Taylor who steps down at the end of the season as Development Head Coach. The work he has put into the Development programs over the past three seasons is appreciated.

Regional Activities The Regional Championships were held in Toowoomba on the 1st - 2nd March 2008. The Standard of swimming was very high and the Championships ran smoothly with keen officials and volunteers helping over the weekend. Mrs Margaret Pugh and Ms Sue-Ellen Harding attended the Championships and their input was most welcome.

The Country Championships were held in Pittsworth on the 19th January. This continues to be an important event in the Regions Calendar as it provides country swimmers and clubs a chance to lift their profile outside Toowoomba. 191 swimmers attended with 769 nominations, the participants were from clubs throughout the Region. The inaugural mixed 200 Freestyle relays for 12yrs and under and 13yrs and over, named after Marvyen Whittaker and Bob Wharton respectively were the highlight of the day.

This season the Regional Short Course was held at Warwick in conjunction with the McNamara Sprints Open. This meet continues to meet our goal to have a Short Course meet that recognizes the Regions Swimmers over a Short Course.

The Inaugural Presentation Night for our Association was held on Saturday 8th March. This was a big occasion for the Association and was very well supported, beyond our expectation. The planning for this night started some 12 months before and the Association thanks Rhonda Sondergeld for all her work in making it a success. It is expected that the presentation night will become an annual event.

25 This event gives the Region a chance to recognize our swimmers with Hayley Wolff being awarded the Swimmer of the Year.

Congratulations The Association is proud to congratulate Marvyen Whittaker on being awarded Swimming Queensland Award of Excellence for his dedication to swimming. Marvyen is still an active member in the Association and is still working on pool deck as the Pittsworth coach.

Also we wish to congratulate Alastair Bell, selected to Represent Australia at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India.

The Association also rewarded Life Membership to Rhonda Sondergeld, Christine White and Lindsay Clyde for their tireless work for our Association over many years.

Conclusion On behalf of the Association we would like to thank the staff of Swimming Queensland for all their help and support throughout the season and thanks to Retravision and our local sponsors for their support. With continued support swimming on the Downs has a positive future.

WBRSA has had another very successful season with success in the pool, admin areas and with the accreditation of technical officials.

Wide Bay held its inaugural Winter Short Course Championships in August 2007 at Kawana. After cyclonic weather in the week leading up to the championship we had a great day with sunshine and no rain. 149 swimmers from 21 clubs nominated a total of 868 individual swims. Very good for our first time.

Wide Bay also separated the relay events from Wide Bay Long Course Championships and held the WB Relay Meet in Hervey Bay. Although attendance was small the meet was a great success with lots of enjoyment displayed all.

Wide Bay relay teams performed very well at the state relays in December. Our younger swimmers particularly enjoyed being part of the relays. The format of having the relays on one day worked well from a regional perspective.

WB Championships were held in Maryborough with Fairymead taking out the honors again for the 7th consecutive year. Cooroy won the very exciting mercantile relay. Dr Simon Hooton attended the weekend and gave us some valuable feedback concerning our championships.

This season our Junior Skills clinics continued; 100 people attended the JX forum in Noosa; our Early Achievers and Achievers will have their camp in August and the Development Squad competed in Wellington, New Zealand at the Spring competition.

Congratulations to David Towner and the technical official sub-committee. Wide Bay saw an increase in the number of people gaining accreditation with the Sunshine Coast improving by 300%.

Forums were held in September, December, March and June. Many thanks to the attending delegates. The Management Committee has worked hard and had lots of fun as we meet, plan and implement things across the region throughout the season. Special thanks go to SQ for their support throughout the season.

Our presentation evening capped of a great season with a really enjoyable dinner held at the Boat Club in Hervey Bay. Lars Olsen - Young Queenslander of the Year spoke of his Forget-Me-Not children’s home in Nepal. Swimmers received recognition and new squads were announced. Special

26 thanks to SQ for the gifts given to swimmers. Bradley Byrne was awarded WB swimmer of the year. Paddy Steele received recognition for her untiring work in the region and especially Eidsvold SC.

Points score - Winners of our divisional points score were Div. 1 Fairymead; Div. 2 Maroochydore. Div. 3 Hervey Bay; Div 4 Burpengary; Div 5 Quad Park; Div 6 Kilcoy. Overall winner was Maroochydore and overall handicapped winner was Murgon.

The coming season will see the trial of an 1800 membership hotline for families wanting to join their local swimming club. This would not have been possible without the dedication of John Wallace and the sponsorship from Brett Mills Toyota and the donation of $2000 from SQ. Our aim is to put people in contact with their nearest swimming club. Advertisements will screen on television and radio leading up to the Olympics.

Our new project for the 2008-2009 season will be to implement a program for Junior Officials - teenagers who would like to continue in the sport while maybe not swimming. The program will offer assistance to applicants to gain technical official accreditations assist with the implementation of meets and to learn meet manager.

It has been a busy year for our association with much being achieved.

 Installation and commissioning of our Web Meeting System as well as conducting preliminary work to provide online technical presentations using the web meeting system from 2008.  Organizing and conducting the successful CQ Emerging Squad Camp at Cooee Bay, along with providing assistance to Swimming Queensland to conduct its squad camp.  Assisting SQ to organize JX Forum and pool session at Rockhampton CQU, as well as supporting Go Club Forums and helping SQ arrange Zoggs Clinics.  Apply for grants and acquit monies received.  Ensure CQ was represented in the Regional Relay at the Queensland Championships.  Provide free coach travel for swimmers to attend a Western Queensland Meet.  Host the CQ Championship dinner. Then [with the assistance of Gladstone swimming Club as host] conduct a successful CQ Championship Meet that weekend.  Administer the 2008 Club Zone and Premiership Competitions and commence to plan for an inaugural CQ Championship Sprint Meet in 2009.  Our association records have been brought up to date.  Provide financial and other assistance to swimmers, technical officials & coaches as well as introduce a club and technical officials recognition program.  Produce the CQ 2008-2009 Swimming Calendar for clubs to review at the 2008 CQ Championships.

Rhiannon Oliver’s selection as a Beijing Paralympian is the highlight of achievements for CQ swimmers and I am certain her success this year will motivate many others to achieve similar successes. A member of Gladstone Swimming Club and former member of Biloela Swimming Club, Rhiannon [coached by Caroline Hayes] will have all of CQ supporting her when she competes in Beijing and we wish her every success.

Our CQ Club Zone and Premiership competitions, along with the CQ Championship prize-money pool, are proving successful. However, it is the combined efforts of our coaches, technical officials, parents and the swimmers themselves that is making all of this possible.

27 Our coaches are challenging swimmers, our officials are overseeing meets so swimmers have the best opportunity to excel and parents are supporting the efforts of their children as well as accepting club and competition duties. Combine this with clubs supporting our own regional meets and promoting team competition between one another and we have a recipe for success.

Major competition will still need to be travelled to. However, with CQ clubs supporting one another, we will create necessary competition that will not only lift the standard of swimming throughout CQ, but also encourage swimmers from other regions to visit us.

In this Olympic Year, television coverage will generate great interest in our sport, so CQ coaches and clubs are encouraged to take advantage of the impetus generated by this great sporting event. It will be the catalyst to ensure CQ Swimming has another exciting and productive year ahead.

Greetings to all our swimming friends around this great state.

Once more we draw to a close another swimming season, as in past years it has been an action packed season in North Queensland. It felt like every weekend there was a swimming carnival or activity associated with swimming. Nominations for all carnivals in the region were again high and it is pleasing to see that swimming continues to attract eager new devotees’. Competition amongst swimmers was of a high standard and results achieved were very pleasing,

The development programs are proving their worth during the season as NQ swimmers achieved their goals of competing at state and national levels. The effort put into the development programs is greatly appreciated by the swimmers and I thank those that give their time so our future stars can shine.

NQSA was asked to participate in the North Queensland Games held in Townsville. Whilst not part of the Queensland Swimming calendar the challenge was readily accepted. The event included swimmers from all over the region and this year a contingent of swimmers from New Zealand. The event was a great success and some very happy swimmers went home with fond memories of the carnival and also plenty of medals. It would be remiss of me not to thank the many volunteers whose efforts made the event so successful.

We at NQSA would like to thank SQ for the assistance they have given us throughout the season. Without, this two way communication of ideas and information the smooth running of regional activities would not be possible.

Last but not least may I say a sincere thank you to my fellow members of the NQ Management Committee, Vice President Theresa Manning, Treasurer Louise Baker, Secretary Judy Hicks and Technical Sub-Committee Member Alan Johnston. The efforts of these volunteers have been greatly appreciated. Thank you and very well done!

Another swimming season has come to a close and I am honoured to have the role of writing a report for our region.

Our season commenced with a farewell to Swimming QLD & FNQRSA Inc Life Member, Saints coach Glen Evans. The club hosted a farewell party for Mr Evans and many swimmers and their families past and present turned out wish him all the best in his retirement. Good luck Mr Evans we thank you for your many years of dedication to swimming in our region.

We also had success with a grant application with the Gambling Community Benefit Fund – we applied for funding to purchase a trailer to suit recently purchased semi-electronic timing gear and to house our volunteer recorders. Although the trailer was not complete, we were still able to utilise the facility at our final swim meet for the season the FNQ Regional Short Course Championships. As one of the recorders I certainly appreciated the use of this new facility, it had been a particularly wet season and as the event was hosted at the recently completed Gordonvale Swimming Complex the grounds proved to be extremely boggy. Before the trailer was purchased tents had been utilised for shelter from the elements and conditions were often not very good. We thank the Gambling Community Benefit Fund and the Queensland Government for their assistance with this project; it has certainly improved the lives of some of our volunteers.

Swimming Queensland Squad Development Once again we thank Swimming Queensland for providing our young athletes with the opportunity to advance with the aid of a squad development program, the following swimmers have been chosen from our region due qualifying for Nationals and beyond:

Multi Disability Development - Grant Patterson has been selected along with his coach Andrew Howard to attend an Australian Flipper camp.

Congratulations to these swimmers for achieving at this level, we hope you will all achieve your goals.

The Australian Junior excellence program has also been well received – 172 FNQ regional swimmers have been recognised through this program, congratulations to these swimmers also.

Squad Recognition at Region Level This season the region introduced another level of recognition, we now have the Endeavour Squad, Achievers Squad & Target Squad. Swimmers that achieved the required IPS received an embroidered towel, which were presented at the Long Course Championships.

In closing I would like to offer thanks to James Crompton for taking on the role of president again, I would also like to mention Wayne Sexton for his continued support particularly with the construction of the trailer, Kelly Morrison – treasurer, John Ellsworth – Vice President, Judy Billiau – Registrar, Andrew Howard – Squad Coordinator and Roxanne Wu – Publicity Officer. Thank you also to our referees and club delegates – without your valuable contribution we could not continue the sport of swimming in the manner we are all accustomed to. I hope the 2008/2009 season will be great.
