Brief History Behind ULM Basketball ULM first competed in 1931-32 as a junior college. The school’s name was Ouchita Junior College (OJC). It won its first-ever game, defeating Louisiana College Freshmen. Basketball at the school was on-and-off for the next 20 years, being replaced by boxing for financial complications, but re-started and re-dissembled several times. Basketball stuck for good in 1951-52 when it became a senior college and competed at the Division I level. ULM (then-known as Northeast Louisiana, or NLU) joined the Gulf States Conference in 1953-54, the Atlantic Sun in 1978- 79, the Southland Conference in 1982-83 and the Sun Belt in 2006-07. Calvin Natt is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,581points and played 10 seasons in the NBA after the New Jersey Nets drafted him eighth overall in the 1979 Draft. ULM has won 20 championships in 65 seasons and has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances. 14 ULM Warhawks Men’s Basketball University of Louisiana Monroe ULM Career Record Book Watch 3FG Made 3FG Percentage (min. 50 made) Games Started 1. History Behind the ‘Warhawk’ Moving into the Sun Belt Conference in the 2006-07 season, ULM’s athletic department completed a transforma- tion. The mascot holds a local historical connection to the P-40 ‘Warhawk’ airplane flown by northeast Louisiana’s General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers of WWII. The Warhawk is also symbolic of the red-shouldered hawk, a local predatory bird commonly found nesting along Bayou DeSiard and soaring above ULM’s athletic facitilities. ULM’s Warhawk moniker is the only one at the NCAA Division I level. Prior to becoming the ULM Warhawks, the school competed as the Northeast Louisiana Indians.
