  • The Case for Kevin By
The Case for Kevin By Http://DraftKevinDurant.Blogspot.Com 24 June 2007 Please send comments, questions, corrections and additional citations to: [email protected] Background : In 1984, a decision was made that altered the course of the Portland Trailblazers and left mental and emotional scars on their fan base that exist to this day. That decision, of course, was to draft Kentucky center Sam Bowie with the team’s #2 pick in the NBA draft, leaving Michael Jordan, who became the undisputed greatest basketball player in the history of the world, to the Chicago Bulls at #3. In a recent interview, Houston Rockets President Ray Patterson defended the Blazers’ decision to draft Bowie, stating, “Anybody who says they would have taken Jordan over Bowie is whistling in the dark. Jordan just wasn't that good.”1 “Jordan just wasn’t that good? ” Reading that quote more than twenty years later, it’s almost impossible to fathom that there existed a day in which “basketball people,” the executive who today are paid millions of dollars to judge the relative mental and athletic skills of teenagers, could not determine that the mythic Michael Jordan was, and would be, a better basketball player than the infamous Sam Bowie. Many things have changed since 1984: AAU youth basketball allows fans to watch players at younger ages, the internet disperses grainy street court video across the world, the NBA has its own television network making famous any and all of its players, mathematical algorithms are used by executives to aid in personnel judgment, and scouts, writers, journalists and bloggers are able to weigh the relative merits of players in ways never thought possible in 1984.

Kennesaw State University Oral History Project KSU Oral History Series No. 106 Interview with David L. Waples Conducted by Thomas A. Scott Edited and indexed by Thomas A. Scott Friday, 17 June 2011 Location: Sturgis Library, Kennesaw State University TS: David Waples was Athletic Director from 1987 to 2010 and then retired and stayed this last year working on the history of the Athletic Department. Dave, we start all these interviews by just asking people to talk a little bit about their background, where you were born, when you were born, where you grew up, and things of that sort—where you went to school and so on. DW: I’ll be happy to give you that and hopefully make a long story short. I was born in Columbus, Ohio, where we lived on a farm which was 10 miles outside of Columbus, and five miles out in the country from where I went to school in Grove City. My father worked in the post office, and we lived with my grandmother, his mom. My grandfather had died in 1947, and so the farm was worked by our cousin who lived down the road, as we say in Ohio.

  • Draft Previewpreview “From Purely a Star Power Standpoint, Yes, the Class of 1984 Is the Best Ever
1984-851984-85 DraftDraft PreviewPreview “From purely a star power standpoint, yes, the Class of 1984 is the best ever. There are four Hall of Famers; five if you include Oscar Schmidt, who never actually played in the NBA. But Jordan, by all accounts, is the best player in NBA history. Olajuwon and Barkley are probably among the top 15 players to ever play the game, and Stockton isn't too far behind. Many consider the 90s the 'golden era' of NBA basketball, and the 1984 Draft is the driving force behind that notion.” ----------------- NBA.com “Top Players (Career Win Shares): Michael Jordan (214.0), John Stockton (207.7), Charles Barkley (177.2), Hakeem Olajuwon (162.8), Otis Thorpe (106.4), Sam Perkins (105.4), Kevin Willis (81.8), Michael Cage (74.4), Jerome Kersey (69.5), Alvin Robertson (52.1). The star power at the top of this class is second to none. In NBA history, 20 players have accumulated at least 160 win shares, and four of them (20 percent) were drafted in 1984: Michael Jordan, John Stockton, Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon. Only two other classes (1960 and 1987) produced multiple members of this club, and 1984 is the only one with at least three such legends. In their collective careers, Jordan, Stockton, Barkley and Olajuwon combined for 47 All-Star Games, 45 All-NBA teams, 23 All-Defensive teams, 10 scoring titles, nine assist titles, five steal titles, three rebound titles, three block titles, eight NBA championships and seven MVPs. Stockton is the career leader in both assists and steals, Olajuwon is the all-time blocks king and MJ is No.
