THE NATIONAL SHRINE OF ST. PHILOMENA THE SOCIETY OF SAINT PIUS X July 14th, 2019 A.D. – Fifth Sunday after Pentecost Welcome Visitors! The National Shrine of St. Philomena is part of the apostolate of The Society of Saint Pius X. The Shrine is maintained by an Association of Catholics known as “The Friends of St. Philo- mena, Inc.” (Code of Canon Law, N. 215). We teach the full Christian Faith and Morality. We adhere to the Traditional Roman Rites and follow the 1962 Roman Missal. The National Shrine of St. Philomena was founded in 1988 by Father Timothy Hopkins, R.I.P. He was a priest of the Diocese of Marsi, Italy, ordained by Mgr. Biaggio Terrinoni, O.F.M. (Cap.), R.I.P, on December 8th, 1984. Father Hopkins was privileged to have been Gregorian Latin liturgy associated with the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X for more than 23 years. Until 1969, the various Catholic liturgies were While obedient to the One True Church, and all of apostolic origin. The Gregorian Latin acknowledging and praying at each Mass for liturgy, celebrated in this church, follows the His Holiness Pope Francis, and the Most Rever- tradition of Saint Peter, the first Pope, and has end Thomas Wenski, Archbishop of Miami, the never undergone any essential change till the Shrine is not affiliated with the Archdiocese of present time. The feast of the Precious Blood of our Lord was instituted in 1849 by Pius IX, but the devotion is as old as Christianity. The early Fathers say that the Church was born from the pierced side of Christ, and that the sacraments were brought forth through His Blood. **** This year’s Saint Philomena’s Patronal Festival will take place on Sunday, August 11th with our usual street procession after the 10:30 AM Mass. A luncheon will follow. Volunteers are needed for the entertainment. Donations are needed to pay for the food, drinks, tent, tables, chairs, etc. Please contact Myrna Mendez-Seda for contributions/donations. **** Today’s second collection will be taken up for the new Shrine of St. Philomena. **** The Portiuncula Indulgence was the first plenary indulgence that was ever granted in the Church. He who gains this indulgence is freed from all temporal punishments and becomes as pure as after holy baptism. It may be obtained every year from August 1st to August 2nd. The conditions to obtain this plenary indulgence are: 1) Sacramental Confession to be in God’s grace (during 8 days before or after). 2) Reception of the Holy Eucharist. 3) Recitation of the Apostles' Creed and Our Father for the Pope’s intentions. 4) No attachment to venial sin. **** St. Bonaventure, known as "the seraphic doctor," was born at Bagnoregio, Italy, in 1221. He received the name of Bonaventure in consequence of an exclamation of St. Francis of Assisi, when, in response to the pleading of the child's mother, the saint prayed for John's recovery from a dangerous illness, and, foreseeing the future greatness of the little John, cried out "O Buona ventura" (O good fortune!). St. Bonaventure died in 1274 and was canonized by Pope Sixtus IV on April 14th, 1282. **** July 16 is the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Caramel. Mount Carmel is a mountain in Galilee on which the prophet Elijah called down a miracle of fire from the Lord. There is a tradition that traces the Carmelite Order’s beginnings to the prophet Elijah himself. The formal beginning is attributed to a group of monks who, in the 13th century, began living and praying on the mountain. They venerated the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and from this veneration was derived the name Carmelite. In 1226 the rule of the order was approved by Pope Honorius III, and 21 years later St. Simon Stock, an Englishman, was elected superior of the order. On July 16, 1251, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Simon and gave him the brown scapular and promised her protection to all those who wear the brown habit. Pope St. Pius X decreed in the early 20th century that this blessing of the Blessed Virgin would extend to all who wear the scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. “The LORD is in his Holy Temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him.” (Hab. 2, 20) St. Ambrose’s sermons. Chapter XIX (Number 1) Arius, then, says: "There was a time when the Son of God existed not," but Scripture saith: "He was," not that "He was not." Furthermore, St. John has written: "In the begin- ning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God." Observe how often the verb "was" appears, whereas "was not" is nowhere found. Whom, then, are we to believe? St. John, who lay on Christ's bos- om, or Arius, wallowing amid the out-gush of his very bowels? So wallowing that we might understand how Arius in his teaching showed himself like unto Judas, being visit- ed with like punishment. For Arius bowels also gushed out--decency forbids to say where--and so he burst asunder in the midst, falling headlong, and be- smirching those foul lips wherewith he had denied Christ. He was rent, even as the Apostle Peter said of Judas, because he bought a field with the price of evil- doing, and falling headlong he burst asun- der in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out." It was no chance manner of death, seeing that like wickedness was visited with like punishment, to the end that those who denied and betrayed the same Lord might likewise undergo the same torment.
