Commissaire d’expositions, formateur à la méthodologie de l’inventaire du patrimoine culturel immatériel. Il a travaillé de 2005 à 2010 à un projet de création d’un musée centre culturel postco- lonial en conduisant principalement une campagne de collecte des patrimoines culturels vivants de La Réunion, puis à un projet de création d’un musée sur la valorisation des eaux douces en milieu tropical. Il est également consultant coach en conduite de changement et accompagne les porteurs de projets culturels. Éric Alendroit est engagé, depuis plus de vingt ans, dans la réflexion et l’action sur la connaissance et la valorisation de la langue et les cultures réunionnaises et sur les processus d’émancipation dans un contexte postcolonial. Barbe Noël Noël Barbe est anthropologue, chercheur à l’Institut interdisciplinaire d’anthropo- logie du contemporain. Ses travaux portent les formes de présence du passé et leur politisation, les politiques de l’art, l’épistémologie politique des savoirs ethnogra- phiques, les expériences de l’anticapitalisme, une approche anthropologique de la littérature. Engagé dans des dispositifs culturels, sa pratique est attentive aux effets de pouvoir qui y sont à l’œuvre, comme aux prises qu’ils peuvent permettre pour une micropolitique critique. Bénos Rémi Rémi Bénos est géographe, enseignant-chercheur à l’Université de Toulouse (INU Champollion Albi et au laboratoire GEODE (UMR 5602 CNRS/Université Toulouse Jean Jaurès). Son travail relève d’une approche critique des processus de patrimonialisation de la nature et des paysages, à partir d’enquêtes de terrain conduites dans les zones de montagne d’Europe (Pyrénées, Massif central) et d’Afrique (Kilimanjaro, Tanzanie). Dassié Véronique Véronique Dassié est chargée de recherche à l’Institut d’Ethnologie Européenne, Méditerranéenne et Comparative (Aix Marseille Univ, CNRS, IDEMEC, Aix-en- Provence, France). Ses travaux portent sur la manière dont les individus s’engagent 5 dans des projets de reformation du monde à travers la genèse d’objets d’affection et des négociations avec l’intime. Martínez González Rocío Noemí M. Historienne de l’art par l’UNAM à Mexico et docteur en anthropologie sociale par l’EHESS-Paris. Depuis plus de 20 ans, elle fait des recherches sur les struc- tures artistiques et iconographiques dans divers villages mayas, de la jungle et des hautes terres du Chiapas. Elle a étudié la mémoire rituelle dans différentes festi- vités, notamment un carnaval tsotsil dans une commune autonome du Chiapas. Elle est professeur à la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales/UNACH de San Cristóbal de Las Casas et membre des séminaires de l’Universidad de la Tierra et du collectif des femmes de la Sixième déclaration de la forêt Lacandone à Jovel (San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas). À Paris, elle collabore avec le LESC, et est membre du Séminaire des Américanistes. Elle est également l’auteur du film documentaire Le K’in tajimol dans la municipalité autonome de Polhó Cd, films Paris, Batsilk’op Chiapas, (2006-2014). Parent Hervé Titulaire d’un master « Direction de projets artistiques et culturels internationaux » (Lyon 2), Hervé Parent est directeur de l’association KaRu prod. Il a notamment en charge le pilotage du projet d’inscription de la rumba catalane sur la Liste repré- sentative du PCI de l’Unesco. Il développe aussi, au sein de la structure, des actions de management et de production discographique avec des artistes gitans de l’espace eurorégional Pyrénées-Méditerranée. Smeets Rieks Ethnolinguiste, professeur des langues du Caucase à l’université de Leiden, Rieks Smeets a été, de 2003 à 2008, Chef de la Section du Patrimoine culturel immatériel à l’Unesco et Secrétaire de la Convention pour la sauvegarde du PCI. Depuis 2008, il est consultant en PCI, notamment dans les pays de l’Europe du Nord ces der- nières années. Storari Jacopo Après avoir obtenu un Bachelor of Arts en philosophie et ethnologie à l’universi- té de Lausanne, Jacopo Storari a suivi le cursus interdisciplinaire du master en sciences sociales avec orientation anthropologie de l’université de Neuchâtel. Son mémoire de recherche porte sur la conversion d’un site industriel situé dans la Suisse 6 Les Cahiers du CFPCI 7 méridionale en objet patrimonial. Dans le cadre de ses études de master, il a tra- vaillé au Musée d’ethnographie de Neuchâtel (MEN), où il a également partici- pé à la conception et à la réalisation de l’exposition temporaire C’est pas la mort ! (27 juin 2015-17 janvier 2016). Depuis octobre 2016, il réalise une thèse au sein du centre Georges Chevrier de l’université de Bourgogne et de l’Institut d’ethnologie de l’université de Neuchâtel portant sur Les prises françaises du patrimoine culturel immatériel. Contribution à une anthropologie de la territorialité. Tornatore Jean-Louis Jean-Louis Tornatore est anthropologue, professeur à l’Université de Bourgogne et chercheur au Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire de Recherche « Sociétés, Sensibilités, Soin » (LIR3S, UMR 7366). Ses recherches et ses engagements l’ont conduit de la mine au patrimoine et du patrimoine à l’anticapitalisme. Ses travaux actuels se tournent vers l’écologie des savoirs, les formes d’insurgence et de résurgence et une mise en perspective critique des transitions. 7 8 Les Cahiers du CFPCI 7 Jean-Louis Tornatore Introduction Patrimoine et territoire, limites et impasses d’une « parenté conceptuelle » Ce volume réunit un ensemble de textes issus de communications présentées lors du 6e colloque de l’ethnopôle CFPCI qui s’est tenu les 6 et 7 octobre 2017 à Vitré, sous le titre : « Les territoires du patrimoine culturel immatériel ». L’objectif initial était d’interroger ce que le patrimoine culturel immatériel (désormais PCI) fait au territoire ou plutôt de questionner à nouveau la relation patrimoine-terri- toire à partir de l’institution de la nouvelle catégorie patrimoniale. L’argument était suggéré par un article incisif de Valdimar Hafstein (2011) dans lequel il propose de problématiser la question patrimoniale

    Atlantic Origin of the Arctic Biota? Evidence from Phylogenetic and Biogeographical Analysis of the Cheilostome Bryozoan Genus Pseudoflustra Piotr Kuklinski1,2*, Paul D. Taylor2, Nina V. Denisenko3, Bjo¨ rn Berning4 1 Institute of Oceanology, Polish Academy of Sciences, Sopot, Poland, 2 Natural History Museum, London, United Kingdom, 3 Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia, 4 Geoscientific Collections, Upper Austrian State Museum, Leonding, Austria Abstract The intricate geological evolution of the Arctic Ocean is paralleled by complexities in the biogeographical and phylogenetical histories of the Arctic biota, including bryozoans. Here we present revised taxonomic descriptions for all known species of the bryozoan genus Pseudoflustra, and use the present-day distributions and phylogenetic relationships between these species to infer the historical biogeography of the genus. Nine species belonging to the genus Pseudoflustra are recognized in the Arctic and North Atlantic. One new species, previously identified as Ichthyaria aviculata, is described as Pseudoflustra radeki sp. nov. Another species, previously assigned to Smittoidea as S. perrieri, is transferred to Pseudoflustra. Biogeographical analysis of Pseudoflustra reveals that species distributions mostly match current patterns pertaining in the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean. Distributions were probably shaped by recent geological history as present-day current directions in the Arctic Ocean are believed to have been similar for at least the last 120 000 years. Phylogenetic analysis of Pseudoflustra places the five Arctic-North Atlantic species in a clade crownward of a paraphyletic grouping of North Atlantic species. Given that the Arctic Ocean was fully glaciated until 18 000 years, the most likely explanation for this phylogeographical pattern is that species of Pseudoflustra colonized the Arctic relatively recently from North Atlantic sources.

    RESEARCH COMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH COMMUNICATIONS The biogeography of the Plastisphere: 541 implications for policy Linda A Amaral-Zettler1,2*, Erik R Zettler3, Beth Slikas1, Gregory D Boyd3, Donald W Melvin3, Clare E Morrall4, Giora Proskurowski5, and Tracy J Mincer6† Microplastics (particles less than 5 mm) numerically dominate marine debris and occur from coastal waters to mid-ocean gyres, where surface circulation concentrates them. Given the prevalence of plastic marine debris (PMD) and the rise in plastic production, the impacts of plastic on marine ecosystems will likely increase. Microscopic life (the “Plastisphere”) thrives on these tiny floating “islands” of debris and can be transported long distances. Using next-generation DNA sequencing, we characterized bacterial communities from water and plastic samples from the North Pacific and North Atlantic subtropical gyres to determine whether the composition of different Plastisphere communities reflects their biogeographic origins. We found that these communities differed between ocean basins – and to a lesser extent between polymer types – and displayed lat- itudinal gradients in species richness. Our research reveals some of the impacts of microplastics on marine bio- diversity, demonstrates that the effects and fate of PMD may vary considerably in different parts of the global ocean, and suggests that PMD mitigation will require regional management efforts. Everyone in American Samoa have a friend, sibling, family member or relative who are or have been in the military, and many use the military to gain access to education and money, and to help their family. In this thesis I explore the process of becoming U.S. Marines amongst a group of young people in American Samoa working to meet the requirements to go to boot camp. I argue that the time spent training for boot camp is simultaneously a period where they take the first steps towards acquiring the habitus and mindset of a Marine. I look at how they use shared values, brotherhood, as well as ways of thinking about progress, pain and how to live life, to create and maintain a shared identity as Marines. This topic is looked at through the lens of the body and the mind, and how they work together to create the Marine as a holistic and lifelong identity.

They build landfills and expensive artificial islands. The ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface. Those countries (or persons of wealth) starting the early colonization of the ocean may obtain advantages through additional territory or creating their own independent state. An old idea is building a big ship. The best solution to this problem, however, is the provision of floating cities, islands, and states. The author’s idea is to use for floating cities, islands, and states a cheap floating platform created from a natural ice field taken from the Arctic or Antarctic oceans. These cheap platforms protected by air-film (bottom and sides) and a conventional insulating cover (top) and having a cooling system can exist for an unlimited time. They can be increased in number or size at any time, float in warm oceans, travel to different continents and countries, serve as artificial airports, harbors and other marine improvements, as well as floating cities and industrial bases for virtually any use.     Sebastian Potes Dr. Elisa Warford Writing-340 6/11/13 Floating Cities: Settling the Sea and the New Frontier Abstract Many attempts have been made at building a floating city but only a few have been partially realized. Once thought to be a far off notion, the colonization of the ocean seems to be within reach. We will discuss a new method, proposed by scientist/engineer/inventor Alexander Bolonkin, that would create mobile, interlocking, floating ocean-platforms from which to build upon. This method, combined with an industry that would enable floating cities to flourish - the production of algae as biofuel - could lead to the next frontier. Introduction Ocean colonization is the theory and practice of permanent human settlements of oceans. These settlements may float freely on the ocean surface, be attached to the bottom of the ocean, or be somewhere in between [1]. The main reason for colonizing the ocean would be to expand the amount of livable area. Colonizing the surface of the ocean would also open up a whole new economy based on tourism, aquaculture (the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and aquatic plants), and other ocean based industries. Ocean colonization would also provide a testing ground for space colonization. It seems that colonizing the ocean is simpler and would probably occur first. The lessons learned from running an ocean colony may prove useful to future outer space colonization efforts. Floating cities are not a new concept. In fact, similar communities already exist in the form of houseboats, oil platforms, hotels, and cruise ships (which are often called floating cities).

Stiebens1 & Christophe Eizaguirre1* Understanding the processes that underlie the current distribution of genetic diversity in endangered species is a goal of modern conservation biology. Specifcally, the role of colonization and dispersal events throughout a species’ evolutionary history often remains elusive. The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) faces multiple conservation challenges due to its migratory nature and philopatric behaviour. Here, using 4207 mtDNA sequences, we analysed the colonisation patterns and distribution of genetic diversity within a major ocean basin (the Atlantic), a regional rookery (Cabo Verde Archipelago) and a local island (Island of Boa Vista, Cabo Verde). Data analysis using hypothesis‑driven population genetic models suggests the colonization of the Atlantic has occurred in two distinct waves, each corresponding to a major mtDNA lineage. We propose the oldest lineage entered the basin via the isthmus of Panama and sequentially established aggregations in Brazil, Cabo Verde and in the area of USA and Mexico. The second lineage entered the Atlantic via the Cape of Good Hope, establishing colonies in the Mediterranean Sea, and from then on, re‑colonized the already existing rookeries of the Atlantic. At the Cabo Verde level, we reveal an asymmetric gene fow maintaining links across island‑specifc nesting groups, despite signifcant genetic structure.

For many of the approximate 300 oil platforms, their service life is approaching the end. Thus far, only a handful of offshore platforms in Malaysian waters have been decommissioned mainly due to lack of regulatory framework and weak decommissioning plans. The shortage of decommissioning yards provides another major challenge in managing onshore disposal. With a number of options viable in decommissioning our used platforms, a review of these possibilities is timely. The scope of this paper entails the decommissioning methods particularly in the Gulf of Mexico, where conditions are similar to Malaysian waters. Evaluations of methodology as well as sustainability implications are discussed. The usual methods of decommissioning involve any of these options: complete removal, partial removal, reefing or re­using. Employing the aspects of sustainability as a pillar of the study, a conceptual framework of a viable decommissioning scheme is drawn. It was conceptually found that refurbishing the whole of the structure as a livable hub has its own unique potentials. Given the calm conditions of Malaysian waters and the sturdy design of the platforms, the restored structures hold possibilities either as ocean townships or futuristic cities such as a 'sea­stead'.

Steering north to regain their way, Diaz and crew caught sight of land on 10 August along the coast of Anosy, Madagascar’s southeast extremity (fi g. 1). The day was the Feast of São Lourenço, and Diaz named the big island (Madagascar) for European cartography after the feast.1 As far as it is known, this was the fi rst sighting of Madagascar by seafarers hailing directly from the Atlantic via the Cape route. European sailors and mapmakers continued to identify Madagascar as São Lourenço (Portuguese) and Saint-Laurent (French) for centuries to come. From the early decades of the sixteenth century to the French abandonment of Madagascar in 1674, Anosy in southeast Madagascar was an important site of European-Malagasy interac- tion. The meeting grounds of Anosy played a signifi cant role in the early modern history of the southwest Indian Ocean, much as the Cape of Good Hope or Kilwa and Mombasa did, but they are poorly known outside a close circle of francophone Madagascar experts. Unmatched fun.” Letter From the Director Dear Delegates, My name is Anna Isler and I am thrilled to serve as your director for Project Atlantis! I am a junior at the college double majoring in Biology and Health Sciences. Outside of academics, I play the violin in the W&M Symphony Orchestra and a string quartet, conduct research on synthetic biology and genetic engineering, and, of course, I am a member of the International Relations Club. As a member of the club, I have worked with the philanthropy team, International Relations Cares, competed in and staffed conferences, and I am a member of the &MUN IX Secretariat. I was first introduced to MUN when I came to William & Mary, and I have enjoyed traveling to competitions and staffing ever since. I have been a fan of sci-fi and fantasy stories for as long as I can remember, and I’m excited to be able to bring elements of both genres into this committee. Right now, science and technology are progressing faster than ever, so who knows what could happen by the time we reach the year 3000.
