Introduction Apple (Maluspumila) is commercially the most important temperate fruit and is the fourth produced in the world after banana, orange and grape. About 70 million tons of apples were grown worldwide in 2013, and China produced almost half of this total. The United States is the second-leading producer with more than 6% of world production. In 2001-02, although production increased by less than 1% (i.e. from 11 to 12 lakh tones). It is mostly grown in the states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Apple belt of the Himachal is the most important crop, accounting for about 90% of the total horticultural production. Received: July 24, 2018 Accepted: October 02, 2018 ABSTRACT The majestic Himalayas have a unique place in Indian history and traditions. The entire region is endowed with natural and cultural beauty. Since the dawn of civilization in this subcontinent, the strategic location of the western Himalayas on the crossroads of racio-cultural movements has been responsible for shaping the socio- economic milieu of the people of this region. The state of Himachal Pradeshis located on the traditional trade routes that connect the Indian mainland with the Trans-Himalayan regions in Tibet, China, central Asia, and even the Middle East. It is the most desirable state for mountain tourism for domestic as well as foreign travellers. Himachal Pradesh is a relatively new establishment, but the history of the lands it comprises goes back to ancient times. The main objective of this paper is to study the historical perspective of tourism in Himachal Pradesh from the Mughal period to the modern period with a narrative approach. Keywords: Travel, Tourism, History, Mountains, Himachal Pradesh INTRODUCTION Travel was a typical way of life prior to the advent of modern means of transportation, when economic compulsion forced people to travel, often over hazardous territories to trade essential commodities.

Prasher* & Deepali Ashok Department of Botany, Punjab University, Chandigarh-1600014, India (Received on: 17 April, 2013; accepted on: 11 May, 2013) ABSTRACT Three hundred fifty five species of wood rotting fungi (non-gilled Agaricomycotina) are being recorded from state of Himachal Pradesh. These belong to 37 families spreading over 133 genera. These are recorded from 8 districts (Chamba, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Shimla, Solan, Bilaspur, and Mandi) of the study area. District Bilaspur and Mandi of Himachal Pradesh have been surveyed for the first time. Key Words: Wood rotting fungi, Agaricomycotina (non- gilled), Himachal Pradesh, North Western Himalayas. • The Old Hindustan Tibet Road and Kotgarh: 1815- 1947
8th Mediterranean Interdisciplinary Forum on Social Sciences and Humanities, MIFS 2020, 28-29 May Online Conference, Proceedings The Old Hindustan Tibet Road and Kotgarh: 1815- 1947 Vikram Bhardwaj, M. Phil, MA Government College Sanjauli, Himachal Pradesh University, India Usha Sharma, MA RKMV, Himachal Pradesh University, India Abstract The year 1815, is a watershed in the history of Shimla Hill States because, in this year, the British established their control over the region and opened a new chapter in the relationship between the Shimla Hill States and the British Government. After winning the war the British restored the petty hill kingdoms to their legitimate rulers, except retaining small tracts, detached plots situated on the hills for establishing the Military cantonments in these regions. These isolated patches scattered at considerable intervals among the hill states were formed into Shimla District, under the direct administration of the British Government. This made the British Government the paramount power in relation to these states and it exercised paramountcy over the hill states from 1815 till independence in 1947. The territory of Sadoch/Kotgarh was also among the British territorial acquisitions within the hills which belonged to the small principality of Kotkhai. British troops continued to stay there until 1843 when the detachment was finally withdrawn and handed over to missionary activities. The retention of Sadoch/Kotgarh was due to the fact that it contained some good military posts and forts. This led to the construction of Old Hindustan Tibet road which changed the socio-economic and religious spheres of this region. The chief importance of Kotgarh was that it holds an advanced post towards the Punjab and Tartary probably the farthest in the north.
