Nand Singh and Jangnamah Europe: Subaltern Insights on the Wars of Empire
Nand Singh and Jangnamah Europe: Subaltern insights on the wars of Empire blogs.lse.ac.uk/southasia/2017/04/05/nand-singh-and-jangnamah-europe-subaltern-insights-on-the-wars-of- empire/ 2017-4-5 Jangnamah poetry is a literary form dating back to the 16 th century, used by Punjabi authors to narrate conflict. Here Raman Singh Chhina discusses the significance of Jangnamahs as a historical resource, highlighting one particular work which offers a unique insight on a Sikh soldier’s experience of WWI. Nand Singh, an Indian poet and soldier who witnessed the World War I fighting under the British in Aden, opens his Jangnamah Europe verse with assassination of the ‘Shehzada’ (Prince) of Austro- Hungarian Empire by the Serbians. His poem then talks about the events which led to the German invasion of Belgium and how “the compassionate British Government, stood with Belgium and France against the arrogant Germany who broke all the agreements.” Nand Singh’s work and other Jangnamahs of the British period in Punjab are valuable literary and historical narratives providing rare subaltern perspectives about the colonial wars and conflicts. Even prior to the WWI, Punjabi soldiers had fought under British in the Second Anglo-Afghan war, Anglo-Egyptian war, Second Opium war, Boxer Rebellion in China and multiple campaigns in the North West Frontier. There was very little documentation of this period “from below”, and of this limited historiography Jangnamah poetry holds a vital but largely forgotten position. Nand Singh finished Jangnamah Europe on 7 June 1919 and is arguably the first work in Punjabi discussing the European and Middle Eastern people, empires and politics. -
Judas 9 Text
Judas! from Inside A Prune Welcome to issue nine of Judas! As I write this Dylan has begun another year’s touring and although the set-lists may look predictable the arrangements are refresh - ingly, dramatically altered in many cases. Good for him. You will notice a New Morning theme through this issue, with no less than three articles looking at that intriguing period. In issue 10 there will be another theme running through the general articles and reviews; in this case it will be early acoustic Dylan, so if you have anything you want to say on that please send it in. I am not saying that we are doing theme issues as such, it is more a case of giving a recurrent flavour to certain editions. If you have resubscribed you will soon notice additions to the subscribers’ area of the Judas! website. Steve Lescure is generously giving us his 'Dylan Commentaries'. In his own words, he is ‘…bringing together information from a wide variety of sources - numerous books, magazine articles, and the Internet - condensing it down into the essentials and presenting it in an easy-to-digest format.’ This will eventually cover all of Dylan’s official output; the debut album material will be available in the near future. Also on our website we have started an archive section to publish those issues of Judas! that have already sold out. We are delighted to begin our series of excerpts from Izzy Young's back pages. These articles, notes and reviews can be found throughout the issue, wherever you see the symbol and comprise reprints - or first prints - from his notebooks as well as news - papers and magazines and so forth, as dated. -

Quotes Basics Science History Social Other Search h o m e e u r o p e a n i m p e r i a l i s m c o n t e n t s Hinduism remains a vibrant, cultural and religious force in the world today. To understand Hinduism, it is necessary that we examine its history and marvel at its sheer stamina to survive in spite of repeated attacks across India's borders, time and again, by Greeks, Shaks, Huns, Arabs, Pathans, Mongols, Portuguese, British etc. India gave shelter, acceptance, and freedom to all. But, in holy frenzy, millions of Hindus were slaughtered or proselytized. Their cities were pillaged and burnt, temples were destroyed and accumulated treasures of centuries carried off. Even under grievous persecutions from the ruling foreigners, the basics of its civilization remained undefiled and, as soon as the crises were over Hindus returned to the same old ways of searching for the perfection or the unknown. Introduction The history of what is now India stretches back thousands of years, further than that of nearly any other region on earth. Yet, most historical work on India concentrates on the period after the arrival of Europeans, with predictable biases, distortions, and misapprehensions. Many overviews of Indian history offer a few cursory opening chapters that take the reader from Mohenjo-daro to the arrival of the Moghuls and the Europeans. India's history is ancient and abundant. The profligacy of monuments so testifies it and so does a once-lost civilization, the Harappan in the Indus valley, not to mention the annals commissioned by various conquerors. -

Policing British Colonial Protest After 1918

In part, it is a study of changing pat- terns of repressive behaviour in worsening economic conditions, an approach which explains the concentration on the inter-war period, cleaved as it was by the acute economic disruptions of the Depression years. In part, it is an investigation of the connections between perception and action. Focusing on Colonial Office instructions regarding protest policing, it examines the ways in which police and military security forces in the British Empire constructed enemies of colonial state ‘order’. This, it is argued, shaped the resultant stra- tegies of repressive restriction, riot control, and labour containment adopted. Blood on the Tracks: ‘Time Is an Enemy’
Judas! Blood on the Tracks: ‘Time is an enemy’ by John Hinchey ‘Up to Me,’ an outtake eventually released on Biograph, is a rueful ballad of love wasted that picks up the action at the conclusion of ‘Idiot Wind,’immediately after the singer realizes that he and his beloved have fallen out of each other’s orbits. But its tone seems tempered by the realizations of those songs, discussed in the preceding chapter, in which the singer assimilates a devastating romantic loss and struggles to regain speaking terms both with his lost beloved and with himself. Now, in ‘Up to Me,’ the singer he returns to tell her – and himself – what he’s going to do about it. His plan of action is paradoxical: he’s heading out on the ‘Union Central’ in search of the same missing wife he’s leaving. The song I just described is over by the end of the third verse, yet ‘Up to Me’ is twelve verses long. The song gets away from Dylan, overflowing the bounds of the paradoxical farewell note. The lyric feels unfinished, and unlike, for instance, the original version of ‘Idiot Wind’ (later released on The Bootleg Series, Vol. 1-3), it also strikes me as unfinishable, except by starting over from scratch. Indeed, ‘Shelter from the Storm’ can be seen as a radical revision (and revisioning) of ‘Up to Me.’ The problem is that the momentum of feeling that sweeps the singer from one verse to the next seems to be largely unconscious, feelings he recognizes (if at all) only after the fact. -

Drawing on colonial and postcolonial source materials, in addition to contemporary discussions and scholarship that places the 1919 events in the context of the longue durée of British colonial violence and historiography, this essay assesses the appropriateness of a potential centenary apology by the British. The Amritsar massacre remains one of the most rounds, Dyer marched his troops out of the important and controversial events of British square.1 Britain placed the official death count rule in India. Yet, many historians have at 379, but Indian estimates have ranged to over struggled to interpret it due to the ways in 1000.2 The disagreement over the number of which, in isolation, it can appear as an deaths is typical of the uncertainty and debate aberration.
