Braaten, Ingrid Hanken, Ebba Rydh, Per Kristian Amundrød, Frank Havrøy, Trond Olav Reinholdtsen) Eir Inderhaug, sopran Ida Habbestad intervjuer komponisten Cecilie Ore (*1954): Schwirren for vokalensemble (2003) (Tekst: Robert Musil) Toil & Trouble for vokalensemble (2012) (urfremføring) (Tekst: William Shakespeare) Who do you think you are? for solo sang (2014) (urfremføring) (Tekst: Cecilie Ore og Bibbi Moslet) --- Who do you think you are? er basert på materiale fra Norges Grunnlov og verbale trakasseringer rettet mot kvinnelige journalister, politikere, forfattere og kunstnere. • Norway – Music and Musical Life
Norway2BOOK.book Page 273 Thursday, August 21, 2008 11:35 PM Chapter 18 Norway – Music and Musical Life Chapter 18 Norway – Music and Musical Life By Arvid Vollsnes Through all the centuries of documented Norwegian music it has been obvi- ous that there were strong connections to European cultural life. But from the 14th to the 19th century Norway was considered by other Europeans to be remote and belonging to the backwaters of Europe. Some daring travel- ers came in the Romantic era, and one of them wrote: The fantastic pillars and arches of fairy folk-lore may still be descried in the deep secluded glens of Thelemarken, undefaced with stucco, not propped by unsightly modern buttress. The harp of popular minstrelsy – though it hangs mouldering and mildewed with infrequency of use, its strings unbraced for want of cunning hands that can tune and strike them as the Scalds of Eld – may still now and then be heard sending forth its simple music. Sometimes this assumes the shape of a soothing lullaby to the sleep- ing babe, or an artless ballad of love-lorn swains, or an arch satire on rustic doings and foibles. Sometimes it swells into a symphony descriptive of the descent of Odin; or, in somewhat less Pindaric, and more Dibdin strain, it recounts the deeds of the rollicking, death-despising Vikings; while, anon, its numbers rise and fall with mysterious cadence as it strives to give a local habitation and a name to the dimly seen forms and antic pranks of the hol- low-backed Huldra crew.” (From The Oxonian in Thelemarken, or Notes of Travel in South-Western Norway in the Summers of 1856 and 1857, written by Frederick Metcalfe, Lincoln College, Oxford.) This was a typical Romantic way of describing a foreign culture.

International Festival & Conference 5-7 June 2008, Birmingham, UK fusing music and technology Programme Welcome to Integra 2008, the culmination of the three-year Integra project supported by the Culture 2000 programme of the European Commission. What is unique about Integra 2008? We would boldly suggest that only rarely in a music festival has the desire to bring together different, often conflicting worlds been so central. Integra 2008 thrives at the precarious but fertile intersection of music and technology, where creativity can either be overwhelmed or augmented in powerful, unpredictable ways, opening up visionary landscapes. >hi^ijid >iVa^Vcd 8jaijgV In three days of performances of mixed media and live electronic music and an international conference, we will convince you that this music matters, and is worth preserving for the future. Featuring five of the best European new >hi^ijid music ensembles, Integra 2008 showcases seven new works, four of which are>iVa^Vcd world premières, and six works from the history of live electronic music, whose8jaijgV original and now obsolete technology has been modernised by the Integra project teams. >hi^ijid >iVa^Vcd Y^ Running concurrently with our Festival showcase, the Integra 2008 Conference, 8jaijgV ‘Solving the tensions between musicians and technology’ asks: AdcYgV Are we prepared to narrow the gap between academic research and artistic practice? Are we ready to humanise our technologies? By bringing together artistic promoters and decision makers, researchers, composers and performers we aim to stimulate a debate about technology and music. The Conference offers a rare opportunity to discuss the challenges and possibilities new technologies bring to music, and look at ways of solving existing tensions between musicians and technology.
