CORONAVIRUS

The Coronavirus is rapidly spreading, and at the moment of wri ng, has aff ected seventy countries, including India. There is no sign that it has reached its peak, and more deaths are being reported each day.

I am recommending the following steps for the control of the virus:

1. Encourage our people not to shake hands at the Sign of Peace, but to greet each other with folded hands (namaste). In general, avoid shaking of hands. 2. Encourage our people to receive Holy Communion in the hand. 3. Before distribu on of Holy Communion, the Priest/Minister could purify their hands in a bowl of water/sani zer. 4. On Good Friday, at the Venera on of the Cross, discourage people from kissing the Cross. The blessing with a raised Cross would be adequate. Those who desire could come in a queue, make reverence with a bow, and go back. 5. Holy Water stoops may be kept dry. 6. If any one shows signs of the Flu (coughing or fever), please avoid contact with people. Medical assistance and care at home is the safest remedy.

Evidently, all these are temporary arrangements, and will be reviewed from me to me. At the moment, these Norms can be followed ll Easter Sunday - April 12, 2020. If there is any indica on that an individual in the community is infected, Priests are advised to temporarily suspend mee ngs of Cells, Sodali es, Associa ons and other large gatherings.

Do advise people not to panic. The Government authori es are doing their best to face this challenge. All of us need to cooperate so we can combat this eff ec vely.

Our fi rst faith response is to turn to God. I recommend the following prayer be said a er , and frequently at home.

Prayer Almighty and merciful God, who show your love to all Crea on everywhere, hear graciously the prayers we make for all those aff ected by the coronavirus in various parts of the world. We come before you asking for a quick control of the outbreak, for a healing of those aff ected, for the vic ms and their families. We pray for the doctors doing research that an eff ec ve vaccine to combat the sickness is speedily found. We pray for the Government and health authori es, that they may take appropriate steps for the good of the people. We make this prayer through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

6 · THE EXAMINER · MAR 14 - 20, 2020 FFrr AnthonyAnthony CCharanghatharanghat Thirst for Living Waters

he Gospel reading of the third Sunday of Lent this year is about the Samaritan woman who went to draw water from the well and found Jesus sitting there, tired from the journey. In T His conversation with the woman at the well, He said to her, "Give me a drink." Just as in EDITORIAL that Samaritan afternoon, Jesus comes into our life, halfway through our Lenten journey, telling us, as He did to the Samaritan woman: "Give me a drink" (Jn 4:7) thirsting to off er us living waters to eternal life. "Give me a drink," he asks us. But really, what He wants of us is what He wanted of her – our hearts and all our love. His material thirst, says Pope John Paul II symbolises a far deeper reality; it expresses His ardent desire that His dialogue partner and her fellow-citizens will open themselves to faith. If we give in to His request, we will simply be responding to His love for us; there will be an exchange. He will give us His heart. Jesus spoke of a 'living water' that He could off er her that would be able to quench her thirst, and become in her 'a spring of water welling up to eternal life.' When the woman at the well encountered Jesus, she made fairly quick assumptions about Him. She was instantly able to see that Jesus was Jew unlike her, a Samaritan, and because of the resentment that existed between them, she thought He would not want anything to do with her. Besides, she was a woman and on the margins of the society in which she lived. She expected Him not to reach out to her. His discourse with her demonstrated that He knew the state of her personal life, and proved her wrong in her assumptions. He does not share the prejudices of His people, or others' judgmental attitudes and gender discrimination. He very gently leads her on a journey of discovery. He shows her who – and what – she is. He shows her that He accepts her, will not condemn her or dismiss her. He gives her time, treats her with respect, acknowledging her dignity. Patiently, He leads her to a deeper understanding of what He is off ering. He is not put off when she brings up the diff erences between her people and Jesus' own traditions. Then, when she is ready, Jesus reveals who He is. In response to her intuitive remarks about the Messiah, He reveals that the hour has come to adore the one true God in spirit and truth. Lastly, He entrusted her with something extremely rare: that He is the Messiah. Finally, she is so taken up with Jesus, that she spreads the message and brings others to meet Him, so that they also can spend time. The episode speaks to us of this dialogue that ends up in a salvifi c barter where the Lord, so 'deeply thirsted' for the salvation of the Samaritan woman, that 'he set on fi re in her the fl ame of God's love'. Even today, Jesus continues to 'thirst', namely, to desire humanity, 'thirst' for our faith and love, 'thirst' for our response of faith to so many Lenten invitations - to conversion, to change, to reconcile with God and our brothers, to prepare ourselves, as much as we can, to receive a new life of resurrection in the coming Easter. 'I who am talking to you, I am He' (Jn 4:26)—this direct and clear acknowledgment by Jesus of His mission, which He had never done before with anyone else, shows likewise God's love, a love that undergoes more in quest for the sinner and promise of salvation, that will abundantly satiate the human desire for true Life. This is why, in this same Gospel, Jesus will proclaim: If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will fl ow rivers of living water" (Jn 7:37b-38). So your commitment this Lent is to go out of yourself and tell all men: 'Come and see a man who told me…' (Jn 4:29).

s a Samaritan woman, and one of disrepute, having had fi ve husbands, A nothing could be more repugnant to a Jew. The hos lity between us had existed for centuries. The schism had corrupted our social and religious fabric to such an extent, that the greatest insult one Jew could hurl at a fellow Jew was to call him a 'Samaritan'. Unaware that the stranger who sat by Jacob's well was the personifi ca on of that insult, 1

I nervously approached it, trying to keep a 'safe distance' between the two of us. I needed water to quench my thirst in more ways than one. By coming to Jacob's well at Sychar, I was inwardly trying to connect to my religious roots as well. He was, a er all, part of the 'undivided' kingdom.

His answer was simple. He had no pre-conceived image of what I should be. One-upmanship does not authen cate one's spirituality. He saw me as I truly am.
