O NE • trillium 10 Items or Less by JC Sherman I saw the devil in the other line (Hell, you work here, after all) But this one is shorter anyway So I put you behind me and hold on to this shirt I’m here to rescue. It really is a shock to see you in flesh it’s been so long since your memory parted I thought I’d killed it and sent it here But you could see me any second If I turn and see recognition in you it would be easier to wrap my hands around your throat and squeeze that recognition out. Your shirt asks How-May-I-Help-You and you could answer yourself with a choking rattle but the customer service here is nothing compared to Elysium across the way So I hand over the money and walk and even though I didn’t look back, I think you might be there now. While I may not be a pillar of salt I’ve left with less than what I had. O 2014 •TW Changinggg by Brendan M. Abbott I was not expecting company When death came knocking at my door. I was not prepared to greet him Or what he had in store. He said the time had come for me To fly away and go. Escape was not an option No way to take it slow. I would not go so easily Or give up without a fight. I glanced around for someone But no help was found in sight. For when time comes to battle death You have to fight alone. Using all the things you learned from life In the time that you have grown. I said he could not take me I would not agree to go. Holding on with all my might Was at best a worthless show. For death cannot be beaten He wins at every turn. The most important lesson Is the one we die to learn. F IVE • trillium Bird Government by Jonathan Minton Migrating birds connect every geography. Their songs define our air. Their y-shaped prints mark our ground with yes or yew in unfinished librettos. We arrange them as books. When others arrive with counterfeit tongues and strange vowels in their beaks, we classify them into the kingdoms of grain, the kingdoms of macadam and hedges. We then wonder at the hugeness of the world, and its wounded places where we vanish with the sparrows we took for our spirits. They call to each other from unnamed trees, before flying to older shores, with their pictures in our fires, our embers in their eyes. IX S A Poem for Andyy Kaufman by Jonathan Minton Call me Black Jack Hayes, the Bell Ringer, the Hand Clap Attacker, and master of the flying moonsault body press. Behind this tiger mask my equilibrium is perfect. When my critics say “look closer,” this will satisfy them. I can guarantee you one thing is certain, I’m pointing to the object hidden behind your back. You intend its purpose each time you bend or stand. You hold it to your mouth and then your ear. Have you any other use of it? Each day I suspect it and the pain it brings me. I know I’ve felt this pain in this arm. * Call me the Back Alley Bully, El Samurai, the Five Fingered Space Crusader. The pressure being applied is to the wrist and to the arm heldagainst the back.

  • “When I Listen to Gish,” Billy Corgan Says Today
“When I listen to Gish,” Billy Corgan says today, “what I hear is a beautiful naïveté.” They say you never forget the first time, and even twenty years later, the 1991 debut album by Smashing Pumpkins –– guitarist and vocalist Corgan, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, bassist D’arcy Wretzky and guitarist James Iha –– remains the unforgettable start of a musical conversation that continues to resonate with millions of fans all around the world. In retrospect, Gish can clearly be heard as a groundbreaking album in the history of what would soon become more much widely known as alternative rock. Gish was, after all, the promising debut of a band that would help alternative rock quickly become part of a new, grungier mainstream. But back in the beginning, Gish was simply the memorable opening salvo by a band from Chicago that really didn’t fit in anywhere in the rock world –– that is, until bands like Smashing Pumpkins helped change the rock world once and for all. To hear Corgan tell it now, Smashing Pumpkins came by their beautiful naïveté naturally. “We’d had very little exposure to the national stage,” he explains. “There’s no way that if we had been exposed to all of what was going on in New York and L.A. earlier, we would have made Gish. This is one of those weird albums that sounds like it came from some guy who crawls up out of the basement holding a record in his hands proudly –– a little like the first time we heard Dinosaur Jr. You think, ‘who the hell is this? And where did that come from?’ ” According to Corgan, the album originally came from Smashing Pumpkins’ early vow of poverty.

  • Cool Kids Never Have the Time: the Music of the Smashing Pumpkins and Youth of the 1990S
STARKIE, ZACHARY J., M.M. Cool Kids Never Have the Time: The Music of the Smashing Pumpkins and Youth of the 1990s. (2008) Directed by Dr. Guy Capuzzo. 105 pp. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the connection between youth of the 1990s and the music of the Smashing Pumpkins. The introduction is used to provide the reader with pertinent background information on youth, the 1990s, alternative music, and the Smashing Pumpkins. Following that, Chapters 1 and 2 feature analyses of two songs by the Smashing Pumpkins, “Here Is No Why” and “Tales of a Scorched Earth.” The analyses of both songs focus on text enhancement and musical contrasts in each song. At the end of Chapter 2, the qualities of each song are compared. Chapter 3 examines two styles of music that were influential on the band, progressive rock and heavy metal, and examines their place in “Here Is Now Why” and “Tales of a Scorched Earth.” Chapter 3 also examines how the differences between these two styles are evident in the Smashing Pumpkins’ music. Finally, Chapter 4 examines the band’s newest recording, Zeitgeist, and assesses its use of the musical aspects evident in “Here Is No Why” and “Tales of a Scorched Earth.” COOL KIDS NEVER HAVE THE TIME: THE MUSIC OF THE SMASHING PUMPKINS AND YOUTH OF THE 1990S by Zachary J. • Speaking in Rhyme and Riddle: Hybridity in Billy Corgan's
SPEAKING IN RHYME AND RIDDLE: HYBRIDITY IN BILLY CORGAN’S MACHINA by ADAM MICHAEL WARE (Under the Direction of Carolyn Jones Medine) ABSTRACT The present study examines MACHINA , a hybrid multimedia narrative composed and performed by Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins. Through a disjunctive use of media to tell the story of a fractured, hybrid hero named GLASS, Corgan reveals himself to be an inheritor of William Blake’s attitudes toward creative media as evidenced in his experiments in illuminated engraving. GLASS, the focus of the chards of narrative and performance, represents one variant of Joseph Campbell’s hero as suited to the needs of Corgan’s disaffected audience. In the act of co-creating the narrative with Corgan, his audience helps to enter themselves into a liminal state and a sense of communitas as developed by anthropologist Victor Turner, again with variations made to suit the fractured, conflicted nature of Billy Corgan’s audience. More than a concept album, MACHINA reworks a number of existing notions about religious responses to narrative and performance. "A differenza di me, Howard vive nel mondo reale, " spiega Billy Corgan "E così il suo ruolo nel disco era simile a quello di un poliziotto che dirige il traffico. Lui è riuscito a far emergere i punti dove il suono dei Pumpkins aveva bisogno di spingersi oltre, e per questo io gli sono riconoscente, perché non è mai stata un'idea della band quella di vivere nel passato nè tantomeno di diventare una macchina di sentimenti.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

A.Place in Time: City -.- Limerick Page 1 of 4 9I: / / A Place in Time i 'I The story of Louisville's neighborhoods '1 A publication @The CourierJournal B 1989 Limerick GENEROSITY WAS CORNERSTONE UPON WHICH IRISH AND BLACKS BUILT THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD By Pat O'Connor O The Courier-Journal imerick. Its very name brings up thoughts of the Irish -- shamrocks, leprechauns, the wearing of the green. But the Limerick neighborhood was home to a small, close-knit community years before the first Irishman put down roots in the area. Before the Civil War, much of the area was farm land. Starting in the 1830s, a small community of blacks lived in the area between Broadway and Kentucky Street. Many were slaves who labored on a large plantation at Seventh and Kentucky streets; others were free blacks who were household servants. In 1858, the Louisville & Nashville Railroad bought the Kentucky Locomotive Works at 10th and Kentucky streets for $80,000, and within a decade, the railroad had built repair shops and a planing mill. At about that time, many Irish workers began moving their families from Portland into Limerick, nearer their jobs. Typically, they lived in modest brick or wood-fiarne houses or shotgun cottages, which were later replaced by the three-story brick and stone structures that line the streets today. L & N also hired black laborers, who lived with their families in homes in alleys behind streets. But fi-om the mid- 19th century until about 1905, Limerick was known as the city's predominant Irish neighborhood. Some historic accounts credit Tom Reilly, an early resident, with giving the neighborhood its name, and others believe it was named for the county or city of Limerick, which is on Ireland's west coast.
