SACRAMENT OF THE SICK —Please notify the rectory when a parishioner would like to receive the sacraments and is homebound, in a nursing home, or in the hospital. Ray’s favorite Saints this week… Apr 23: St. George (303+) Even Islam considers this Christian to be a “prophet”. He suffered in Lydda – now Lod in Israel – as a ‘great martyr’ in Byzantine thought by the year 450 – but when he was ‘seen’ assisting the crusaders in the siege of Antioch in 1098 -- everything changed for the West. By 1350, “St. George for England!” has been our battle cry! Apr 24: St. Fidelis von Sigmaringen (1578-1622) His baptismal name was Mark Roy – much easier to swallow – but he is known to the world as the glorious Franciscan Counter-Reformation martyr of the Swiss Canton Grisons. Check this quote, “I have come to enlighten you, not to accept your errors.” That comment alone inspired 20 armed men to butcher him. Apr 25: St. Mark (first century) I’ve liked him since our family joined St. Mark parish in Vienna, Va in 1971. I’ve loved him reading his gospel in Greek and praying at his relics shrine in Venice. He expresses the raw humanity of Jesus – especially that frustration and anger – more than any other Evangelist. Did he write his gospel in Rome or Alexandria, Egypt? Apr 26: St. Paschasius Radbert (790-865 ) He wrote more clearly about the Assumption of Mary and the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist than all previous scholars. Visit her grave in the cemetery right outside the airport in Western Milano. Numerous children around the world are now named ‘Gianna’ in her honor – including several from our parish.     Saint John Francis Regis - June 16th Born 31 January 1597 France Died 31 December 1640 France At 19, Saint Regis entered the Jesuit order and began to prepare for a priestly ministry that would save thousands of souls. He was ordained at the age of 34 and was then sent to the mission fields of France. In the years since the Protestant Reformation, many French Catholics had become Protestant. Still others were so disillusioned by the Wars of Religion, that they had abandoned Christian faith, entirely. During Regis' day, parishes were known not to have administered the sacraments for twenty years. Many towns were entirely without priests and many of the priests who remained were woefully ill-educated and often ordained hurriedly in order to replace the thousands who had been martyred. During this turbulent period, countless women were forced into prostitution because they had no other recourse for survival. Seeing the need to step in, Saint Regis, began to minister to prostitutes whenever possible, pounding on brothel doors and demanding that new “recruits” be given into his custody. Sometimes, he would see a woman being dragged off by an attacker and would throw himself upon the man, pulling the woman from the grasp of her assailant and allowing himself to be beaten instead. He established safe houses for these at-risk women, whom he came to call “Daughters of Refuge”. Training in lacemaking and embroidery were provided at these locations, giving an alternate income to support the wayward. In addition, St. Regis founded a group of charitable women that helped feed many of the women and orphans during their transition into a productive life, and extended his protection by demanding and receiving, treatment for these abandoned victims of human trafficking, from doctors, nurses and pharmacists.

THE FOUNDRESS OF REGIS HIGH SCHOOL WITH HER CHILDREN A CENTURY OF ACCOMPLISHMENT1914 The inspiration for Regis was a radical one: attract intellectually gifted students who would not otherwise be able to aff ord a private school education, and support them through four years of rigorous, tuition-free academic study. Driving this inspiration was the belief that, regardless of background or circumstances, young Catholic students who were challenged by ambitious goals would respond with exemplary achievement. The idea was innovative, yet the experiment worked, and the results have far exceeded expectations. Since 1914, Regis has provided more than 12,000 students with an educational experience unlike any other, producing exceptional thinkers, dedicated leaders, men for others.

Thereafter, an annual index ap­ peared. These indexes, while generally more than a table of contents, are not an adequate key to the mine of information contained in the Letters. In addition to the annual indexes, the Letters have pub­ lished five other indexes, including the present one. The first of these, called Index A, published in 1888, covers the first ten volumes (1872-1881). It is divided into three parts: Historical Papers, Biographical and General. Biographical is further subdivided into Sketches, Notices, Obituaries and Mentioned. The second of the indexes, called Index B, is not dated but according to a note prefixed to Index A was published in 1888 or shortly afterwards. It covers volumes 11 to 15 and has the same divisions as Index A. These two indexes are still of some value for the first fifteen volumes and references to those volumes in the present index can be further controlled by consulting them. The third of the indexes, published in 1898, covers the first twenty-five volumes of the Letters and is divided into three parts: A General List of Articles with Authors, An Index of Authors, Sketches and Obituary Notices. In a foreword, the editor of the time, Father Samuel H. Frisbee, notes that the List of Articles with Authors was prepared for "the con­ venience of our readers, and to preserve, while they could yet be obtained, the names of the authors of the different articles which have appeared in the Letters for the past twenty-five years." This index is, consequently, still of value.
