Greetings!

I would like to welcome you to the 8th CUNY Athletic Conference Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Classic held at Lehman College, to benefit the American Cancer Society. As you prepare for two days of exciting basketball action, we ask that you take a moment to remember the true purpose of this event.

The Coaches vs. Cancer Classic is a collaboration with the American Cancer Society that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. With inspiration from Coaches vs. Cancer tournaments at the Division I level, we decided to join in the struggle against cancer in the Division III ranks.

We are pleased to bring in a truly national slate of games for you to enjoy, with schools coming from Virginia, Michigan, Maine, and New Jersey. Also, we would like to thank our corporate partners, who have helped us run this year’s Classic. The Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown is serving as the host hotel, housing several visiting teams. The CUNY Athletic Conference has long been a supporter of this event, and continues to assist in various ways.

On behalf of the Lehman College Department of Athletics, and the CUNY Athletic Conference, we would like to thank all of the players, coaches, fans and parents for their participation and support of this event. Together, we can make a difference in finding a cure for this terrible disease.

Enjoy the basketball action these two days, and we look forward to having you here again next year to help continue the fight!

Yours in Sports,

Eric Harrison

Cancer Facts and Figures

The American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths expected each year in order to estimate the contemporary cancer burden, because cancer incidence and mortality data lag three to four years behind the current year. In addition, the regularly updated Facts & Figures publications present the most current trends in cancer occurrence and survival, as well as information on symptoms, prevention, early detection, and treatment.

ACS has published Cancer Facts & Figures annually since 1952. These annual reports provide the most current information about cancer, including the projected numbers of new cancer cases and deaths for the publication year. A unique feature of these publications is their projections of the number of cancer cases and deaths expected in each state and in the nation in the current year. These widely cited projections are scientifically accurate enough to serve as a basis for research, yet readily understood by the public. Each edition of Cancer Facts & Figures includes a Special Section of in-depth focus on a specific cancer or group of cancers.

About Coaches vs. Cancer

The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that empowers basketball coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.

Because cancer has touched so many of our nation's basketball coaches, Coaches vs. Cancer offers them the unique opportunity to fight the disease. Through integrated fundraising activities and public awareness campaigns, participating coaches are truly making a difference in the fight against cancer and are raising awareness in their communities about the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and making healthy lifestyle choices.

If you are a coach looking to get involved in your community and make a difference for a meaningful cause, Coaches vs. Cancer is for you. There are various ways you can use your voice and leadership to help fight cancer:

 Participate in national and local events to raise funds and awareness to support Coaches vs. Cancer and the American Cancer Society.  Serve as a local/national spokesperson to heighten visibility of the resources, services, and support that the American Cancer Society offers to help all people facing cancer.  Advocate for responsible public policy issues related to cancer.  Increase awareness of the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and healthy lifestyle choices.  Raise funds in the fight against cancer to help support the American Cancer Society's lifesaving efforts to eliminate the disease.

IN THE BRONX

SERVING THE BRONX

Each year, approximately 5,400 Bronx residents are diagnosed with cancer. In 2010, the Bronx office of the American Cancer Society was able to reach and provide free services to 2,332 cancer patients in the Bronx.

Free services included:

836 women attended a Look Good Feel Better session – a program that addresses the cosmetic effects of cancer treatment. Participants received a free make up and skin care kit. 161 men attended a Man to Man group – a group for men diagnosed with prostate cancer. 980 women participated in Reach to Recovery – a program that matches newly diagnosed breast cancer patients with a volunteer survivor. Participants received free kits that included a surgical bra, prosthetic, and other supportive items and gifts. 470 patients received on site Patient Navigation by a trained ACS volunteer/staff member. Patient navigators assist cancer patients with receiving free ACS services, additional resources, and provide support. 117 cancer patients attended I Can Cope support groups – groups that provide cancer education and support to all types of cancer patients. 258 women received free wigs and fittings. 1750 Bronx residents received free cancer screenings through the Bronx County Cancer Services Program. In addition, 20 diagnosed cancer patients became recipients of the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program.

All of this was made possible by your generous donations and volunteer efforts. Thank you for your continued support and for making a difference for Bronx residents whose lives have been affected by cancer.
