Hey, Buddy, Wanna Buy a Piece of the Empire State Building?
08 December 2011 | voaspecialenglish.com Hey, Buddy, Wanna Buy a Piece of the Empire State Building? The Empire State Building in New York Correction attached (You can download an MP3 of this story at voaspecialenglish.com) DOUG JOHNSON: Welcome to AMERICAN MOSAIC in VOA Special English. (MUSIC) I’m Doug Johnson. On our show today we play music from rock band Nickelback … We also answer a question from China about the state of Alaska … But first, another question -- could a historic piece of New York City be up for sale soon? (MUSIC) 2 Empire State Building DOUG JOHNSON: Americans like to joke about the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. They use the expression "selling the Brooklyn Bridge" to describe a person who wants to trick someone else. Individuals have, in fact, offered to sell the publicly owned structure to trusting buyers. But it is not for sale. But, over the years, we have never heard about someone selling New York’s Empire State Building -- until now. Christopher Cruise explains. CHRISTOPHER CRUISE: The Empire State Building was the tallest structure in the world for more than forty years. Work on the building was finished in nineteen thirty-one. While it is no longer the tallest, it is probably the most famous. People from around the world visit its eighty-sixth floor observatory to see New York from high above. Ten years ago, the Malkin family bought the Empire State Building for more than fifty-seven million dollars. Now, the family is considering selling shares in a publicly traded company that would operate buildings in New York and the state of Connecticut. -

1 Making Music With Heart Rock The House! 2 Making Music With Heart First Edition September 2013 3 Stagecraft Notes 1. Our goal at gigs is to create a safe and comfortable environment so that people, strangers sometimes, will feel at ease to participate in group singing and dancing. 2. When you arrive at the gig, make an effort to shake the hand of every audience member. Ask people where are they from, what’s their favorite music, do you like to sing? Create connection. Mingle with everybody. 3. As a singer, you are performing. You are seen, admired, listened to, and believed in. You transmit an essence to the audience. Whatever you express, it will be read by the observer/listener. They will read and echo your energy. Give off positive vibes, smile, move and have fun. You will touch many with your vibe. 4. Memorize vs. reading the book. Your eyes are the window to your heart. Use your eyes to connect with people. 5. Maintain good posture, erect with head up. Slouching, arms folded, hands in pockets – no good. Talking with others during a song transmits a bad signal to the audience. 6. Breath is fundamental. Breathe deep into your abdomen and exhale by sending your stomach muscles into your spine. Tank up every chance you have. 7. Drop the jaw, widen the sides of your mouth and let the sound out. Aim the sound from your throat to the back of your top front teeth. Sing forward in the mouth. All voices sing to this place. -

Songs of Working People
s o n g s o f w o r k i n g p e o p l e Seattle Labor Chorus In May 1997, a nervous, exhilarated bunch of amateur singers mounted an out- door stage at Seattle’s popular Northwest Folklife Festival. Facing a huge late afternoon audience, backing up folk legend Pete Seeger, the Seattle Labor Chorus began more than a decade of spirited, thought-provoking performances. A lot has changed in that time, except for the continuing guidance of music director Janet Stecher (of the respected folk duo Rebel Voices). Folks have joined, left and sometimes returned. A skilled crew now provides music sheets with polished, computer-aided arrangements. We improve our collective sound through formal training, practice and choral exchanges. But what’s kept us singing is the satisfaction of what’s been called “having buckets of fun using music to wake the sleeping giant of the American conscience.” At countless union meetings, rallies, marches and picketline demonstra- tions, the chorus has inspired workers with songs of beauty, rage and humor. Striving to reflect current issues, we’ve built a large and varied repertoire enriched by the work of gifted contemporary artists. Some milestones in our history: our tenth Folklife Festival performance this year; singing down the barriers of the “no protest zone” as we rallied against the World Trade Orga- nization; performing in concert with Utah Phillips, Charlie King and Linda Allen; our Vancouver Folk Music Festival debut; wowing crowds at the Washington, D.C. Great Labor Arts Exchange; a musical memorial to the immortal Paul Robeson at the Canadian border; our now-annual public singalong; and even our Best Chorus trophy from Seattle’s annual street-corner caroling contest. -
Winter 2016 When We Stand Together, We Can Make a Change. It Is Time For
Berti Winter 2016 If you are reading this newsletter, chances are you know someone who is gifted. You may have a gifted child, grandchild or student. You may be the director of a gifted program, or the principal of a building that houses a gifted program. You might be teaching in a classroom, unsure of what to do with your gifted students, or you might have your own kids attending a district that does not offer services for gifted, and you would like to see a program started. Whatever has brought you to our newsletter – we are excited you are here! The GAMbit’s mission is to share information and services about gifted with parents, teachers and administrators. That is one of the reasons the Gifted Association of Missouri wanted to make the GAMbit free and online! We want to get the word out that gifted services are important and need to be advocated for in our state. Did you know that gifted services are not required in Missouri? Currently, districts do not have to spend money received from the state for having a gifted program, on gifted education! Gifted students will tell you how important their services are to them. They are passionate about the projects, classes and units that challenge them to think creatively. Children who are gifted know they are unique, and they need affective lessons so they can be more accepting of who they are as a gifted person. It is vital that they believe it is okay to be different! Gifted programs teach that. GAM has a BIG goal this year! We would like to see gifted services mandated in our state.
