The Book of the Watchers (Chapters 1–36) The Book of the Watchers (Chapters 1–36) Superscription to the Book 1:1 The words of the blessing with which Enoch blessed the righteous chosen who will be present on the day of tribulation, to remove all the enemies; and the righteous will be saved. Introduction: An Oracle of Judgment (1:2—5:9) 2 And he took up his discoursea and said, “Enoch, a righteous man whose eyes were opened by God, who had the vision of the Holy One and of heaven, which he showed me. From the words of the watchers and holy ones I heard every- thing; and as I heard everything from them, I also understood what I saw. Not for this generation do I expound, but concerning one that is distant I speak. 3 And concerning the chosen I speak now, and concerning them I take up my discourse. The Theophany “The Great Holy One will come forth from his dwelling, 4 and the eternal God will tread from thence upon Mount Sinai. a Lit. parable (Aram matla<: Gk paraboleμ). 19 EEnochHermtrans.inddnochHermtrans.indd 1919 88/24/2012/24/2012 110:40:590:40:59 AMAM 20 1 Enoch 1:4-9 He will appear with his army,a he will appear with his mighty host from the heaven of heavens. 5 All the watchers will fear and <quake>,b and those who are hiding in all the ends of the earth will sing. All the ends of the earth will be shaken, and trembling and great fear will seize them (the watchers) unto the ends of the earth. 6 The high mountains will be shaken and fall and break apart, and the high hills will be made low and melt like wax before the fire. 7 The earth will be wholly rent asunder, and everything on the earth will perish, and there will be judgment on all. 8 With the righteous he will make peace, and over the chosen there will be protection, and upon them will be mercy. They will all be God’s, and he will grant them his good pleasure.c He will bless (them) all, and he will help (them) all. Light will shine upon them, and he will make peace with them. 9 Look, he comes with the myriads of his holy ones, to execute judgment on all, and to destroy all the wicked, and to convict all humanity for all the wicked deeds that they have done, and the proud and hard words that wicked sinners spoke against him. a Eth: Gk from his camp (same Gk noun). b Eth all will fear and the watchers will quake: Gk all will fear and the watchers will believe. c Gk good pleasure (eudokian): Eth prosperity (=Gk euodian). Contemplate the signs of>c winter, that all the earth is filled with water, and clouds and dew and rain rest upon it. 3:1 Contemplate and observe how all the trees appear withered and (how) all their leaves are stripped, except fourteen trees that are not stripped, which remain with the old until the new comes after two or three years. 4:1 Observe the signs of summer, whereby the sun burns and scorches, and you seek shelter and shade from its presence, and the earth burns with scorching heat, and you are unable to tread on the dust or the rock because of the burning. 5:1 Contemplate all the trees; their leaves blossom green on them, and they cover the trees. And all their fruit is for glorious honor. Contemplate all these works, and understand that he who lives for all the ages made all these works. 2/ And his works take place from year to year, and they all carry out their works for him, and their works do not alter, but they all carry out his word. 3 Observe how, in like manner, the sea and the rivers carry out and do not alter their works from his words. a The textual witnesses in this section are often at odds with one another, fre- quently because of omissions in one or another. Hard of heart! There will be no peace for you! The Verdict 5 “Thena you will curse your days, and the years of your life will perish, and the years of your destruction will increase in an eternal curse; and there will be no mercy or peace for you! 6 Then you will leave your names as an eternal curse for all the righteous, and by you all who curse will curse, and all the sinners and wicked will swear by you.b But all the <chosen>c will rejoice; and for them there will be forgiveness of sins and all mercy and peace and clemency. For them there will be salvation, a good light, and they will inherit the earth.d But for all you sinners there will be no salvation, but on all of you a curse will abide. 7 For the chosen there will be light and joye and peace, and they will inherit the earth. But for you wicked there will be a curse.f 8 Then wisdom will be given to all the chosen; and they will all live, and they will sin no more through godlessness or pride. a Aram: Gk Eth therefore. b Eth omits the rest of this verse. c Gk corrupt for sinners. We might translate “sons of God” as “heavenly beings,” “sons of men” as “humans” or “human men,” and “daugh- ters of men” as “human women.” However, to retain the complex relationships among these terms, to indicate gender distinctions where they are evident, and to avoid the confusion that would arise from the partial replacement of the terms, it seems best to translate the text literally in this section, reminding the reader that this is a story about the illicit mating of beings from the divine and the human realms. e Gks adds and went astray after them: Syr adds and went astray. f Gks Syr add of earth. • The Truth About Angels
PROJECT CONNECT PROJECT CONNECT PROJECT CONNECT The Truth About Angels by Donald L. Deffner I grew up during the Great Depression in the early 1930s. My father was a minister. Behind our small home was a dirt alley which led nine blocks to downtown Wichita, Kansas. I can remember when I was a boy the hungry, destitute men who came to the back door begging for food. My mother never turned them down. She shared what little we had, even if only a couple of pieces of bread and a glass of milk. My mother didn’t just say, “Depart in peace! I’ll pray for you! Keep warm and well fed!” (See James 2:16.) No. She acted. She gave. Often I was curious about these mysterious and somewhat scary men. I had a sense that they were “different” than I was, not worse, not better, just different. I always watched these strangers heading back up the alley toward downtown, and sometimes, in a cops-and-robbers fashion, I secretly followed them, jumping behind bushes so I wouldn’t be seen. I think I half expected them to suddenly disappear. After all, my Sunday school teacher, encouraging us to be kind and care for strangers, told us the Bible says that, by doing so, many people have entertained angels without knowing it (see Hebrews 13:2). I never saw any of the men disappear. They were ordinary, hungry human beings. But my Sunday school teacher was right. God does send His angels to us, and they do interact with us—not just to test us and see if we are kind, but to protect us and guide us.

Christian Angelology Angelology Introduction Why study Angels? They teach us about God As part of God’s creation, to study them is to study why God created the way he did. In looking at angels we can see God’s designs for his creation, which tells us something about God himself. They teach us about ourselves We share many similar qualities to the angels. We also have several differences due to them being spiritual beings. In looking at these similarities and differences we can learn more about the ways God created humanity. In looking at angels we can avoid “angelic fallacies” which attempt to turn men into angels. They are fascinating! Humans tend to be drawn to the supernatural. Spiritual beings such as angels hit something inside of us that desires to “return to Eden” in the sense of wanting to reconnect ourselves to the spiritual world. They are different, and different is interesting to us. Fr. J. • President's Monthly Letter Feast of St. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels September 2020 Dear Guardian Families
President’s Monthly Letter Feast of St. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels September 2020 Dear Guardian Families, Happy Feast of Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels! Yesterday we celebrated our patronal feast and the 3rd anniversary of the dedication of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel. As our fourth year is now underway, we can look back and celebrate the many accomplishments of SMA in the past and look forward to our exciting future together, confident that our patron, St. Michael, will defend us in the battle. Whenever I visit the doctor, there are four words I never like to hear: “Now this may hurt.” That message brings about two responses in me, the first is one of dread… it means I’m going to be experiencing something I really don’t want! Secondly, I brace in anticipation of what is about to happen; I’m able to make myself ready for the event. September is the month of Our Lady of Sorrows (in Latin, the seven “dolors”). When Mary encountered Simeon in the temple, she heard the same message in a more intense form, “this is going to hurt.” The prophet told her, A sword will pierce through your own soul. Mary, a new mother still in wonder at the miraculous birth of her child, now hears that her life is going to be integrally tied to his sufferings. So September is always a month linked to compassion; the compassion Mary had for her son and has for us. It is also a reminder of the compassion we can have for each other.

ARAM, 20 (2008) 59-76. doi: 10.2143/ARAM.20.0.2033120D. ARBEL 59 ELIJAH LORE AND THE ENOCH METATRON NARRATIVE OF 3 ENOCH Dr. DAPHNA ARBEL (University of British Columbia) I – INTRODUCTION The enigmatic Enoch/Metatron narrative, included in 3 Enoch of the Hekhalot and Merkavah literature, draws together threads inherited from a broad range of previous sources to weave a new narrative in which the human/ angelic figure Enoch/Metatron plays a central role. 1 Among these sources two central streams of traditions are pivotal: early Enochic traditions concerning Enoch, and rabbinic traditions, concerning the angel Metatron. Key studies have analyzed thematic and conceptual connections between these early Enochic and rabbinic traditions and 3 Enoch, as well as the channels through which the authors of 3 Enoch came to know them.2 In contrast, not much scholarly attention has been paid to the ambiguity inherent in the new literary construction of the Enoch /Metatron narrative, and the manner in which it characterizes its main protagonist. The narrative integrates, alters, and harmo- nizes themes and images rooted in the early Enochic and rabbinic traditions in a way that seems neither predictable nor traditional. Hence, questions related 1 3 Enoch or Sefer Hekhalot, is included in P. Schäfer, Synopse zur Hekhalot Literatur in col- laboration with M. Schlüter and H.G. von Mutius (Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 1981) sections 1- 79. A German translation of 3 Enoch with text-critical notes has been provided by P. Schäfer and K. Herrmann, Übersetzung der Hekhalot-Literatur, vol. 1:1-82 (Tübingen: Mohr-Siebeck, 1995).

  • The Christian Comforter
The Christian Comforter Enoch the seventh from Adam In the book of Genesis, there are two Enoch’s; one from the line of Cain, in Genesis 4:17, and one from the line of Seth, who is the Enoch that we are concerned with here. The lineage is Adam — Seth — Enos — Cainan — Mahalaleel — Jared — Enoch. Enoch walked with God, and after 365 years God took him — he did not die. Genesis 5:23-24 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. This fact is expanded upon in Hebrews chapter 11 — among those who walked in faith. Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. Enoch is also found in the genealogy of Jesus. Luke 3:37 Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan. Note; above the names are spelt differently in the New Testament which was originally written in Greek. In the time of the early church fathers, the book of Enoch was widely accepted as inspired scripture by Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Athenagoras, Tertullian, Origen and Lactantius. They all referenced Enoch in their own writings, probably because of Jude’s reference that it was a prophetic text. Jude 1:14-15 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
