Non-Racialism and Social Cohesion: Is ANC Failing in its Vision of a National Democratic Society? Speech by Y Abba Omar at the Inaugural Annual Lecture of the ANC Inland Branch, Boksburg Centre, 29 October 2014 Master of Ceremonies and Chair of Inland Branch 42, Wilson Manganyi; Councillor Paulina Morake; Zonal Leader, Duduzile Nqozo. Comrades, ladies and gentlemen. I would like to begin by thanking the Inland Branch for honouring me with this invitation to address you on what I hope would become an annual event. The topic I have been asked to speak to is one very close to my heart. In my talk I will start by addressing the three closely related concepts in the topic for today: nation-formation in South Africa of which non- racialism and social cohesion are key components. I will then spend the second half of my talk focusing on the way forward and milestones for the future. And unlike other speakers who give the answer to the question right at the end, I will answer the question now: No I do not believe the ANC is failing in its vision of a national democratic society but we are going through some challenging moments which can be addressed by the ANC playing a leading role in conducting open and critical dialogue on the issues of non-racialism and social cohesion. This is not the official line from MISTRA or Luthuli House. It is my personal views as a cadre of the movement and I intend being provocative and controversial in some parts. SOME HISTORY From the beginning of the 20th century debates around how a South African nation can be created have revolved around many propositions. -

The Commonwealth Observer Mission was led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo, former Foreign Minister and Attorney-General of Ghana. The other members of the Mission were Hon. Dorothy Pine-McLarty OJ, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica; and Sheikh Abdul Carimo Nordine Sau, Chairperson of the National Elections Commission of Mozambique. The Mission was supported by a four-person staff team from the Commonwealth Secretariat. The Mission was tasked with determining whether the elections were conducted according to the standards for democratic elections to which South Africa had committed itself. During their time in South Africa, the Observer Mission met with a range of stakeholders including political parties, civil society organisations, media representatives, other election observer missions and Commonwealth High Commissioners. -

Sesa ORCID iD: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6406-5378 Abstract Botswana’s much touted peaceful Presidential succession experienced uncertainty after the transition on 1 April 2019 as a result of former President Ian Khama’s public fallout with his ‘handpicked’ successor, President Mokgweetsi Masisi. Khama spearheaded a robust campaign to dislodge Masisi and the long-time ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) from power. He actively assisted in the formation of a new political party, the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF). Khama also mobilised the country’s most populous Central District, the Bangwato tribal territory, of which he is kgosi (paramount chief), for the hotly contested 2019 general elections. Two perspectives emerged on Khama’s approach, which was labelled loosely as ‘tribalism’. One school of thought was that the Westernised and bi-racial Khama was not socialised sufficiently into Tswana culture and tribal life to be a tribalist. Therefore, he was said to be using cunningly a colonial-style strategy of divide- and-rule to achieve his agenda. The second school of thought opined that Khama was a ‘shameless tribalist’ hell-bent on stoking ‘tribalism’ among the ‘Bangwato’ in order to bring Masisi’s government to its knees. (PhD, Geography) Developmental Fusion: Chinese Investment, Resource Nationalism, and the Distributive Politics of Uranium Mining in Namibia Thesis directed by Professor John O’Loughlin China’s rising global influence has significant implications for the politics of natural resource extraction and development in sub-Saharan Africa. Focusing on the uranium industry, I analyze how China’s influence operates at global, national, and sub-national scales in relation to natural resource politics in the southern African country of Namibia. Specifically, I draw on multi-methods fieldwork to evaluate 1) how Namibians are engaging with Chinese investments in mining and 2) what implications these engagements have for the politics of mining and development, including natural resource ownership and the distribution of mining-associated benefits and costs.
