Description of artworks: Value is a commodity that can be traded in and of itself by various perceptions of a population at any given moment in time and history. Inheritance is a single channel video projection addressing the seeming polarities between western ideas of modernization through industry and rise of capitalism, versus the skeletal foundation of an ancient eastern cultural legacy and its remaining traditions in the modern landscape of Iran. By examining the gradual movement and intersection of two still images, (one of an oil refinery under construction and the other of the great audience hall of Persepolis), Inheritance questions the rise or fall of these seeming polarities, allowing the answer to unfold in the ephemeral perception of the viewer and their individual observation of movement and meaning.

Category: Sculpture Name: Elnaz Salehi Email: [email protected] Ref no: ESal186

Short biography: The artist was born in Tehran, Iran, and studied sculpture at the University of Tehran. She has shown her works in exhibitions and festivals around Iran.

Description of artworks: This is the age of imagery, of domination by solid objects. For some, imagery not only defines human perception but humanity itself. Would it then be possible to speak of a blind person's perception? Could it be in any way related to my own perceptions and sensations? The Piraha people, a tribe native to the Amazon rain forests of Brazil, have no abstract terms to express colour apart from bright and dark. Words and language carry socio-historical meanings which only make the intended sense in their own cultural and geographical domains; the awareness and objectivity is often lost in translation to another language. But this shortcoming aside, can we talk of a universal inability to see or to speak? Can we talk of an inability to "tell" our perceptions and to communicate with others? Or, contrary to this, should we talk of an invisible and inexpressible awareness, an unaccountable awareness? Should we talk of an idea which defies perception, which defies assimilation into a linguistic structure, which defies objectification and, like a lightning in the night's sky, blinds all for an instance? The word Mamihlapinatapai is derived from the Yaghan language of Tierra del Fuego, listed in The Guinness Book of World Records as the “most succinct word”, and is considered (for example by Austrian playwright Clemens Berger) one of the hardest words to translate.

List of artworks: Blue, 32cm x 17cm x 5cm, sheet metal/LED light, 1500000 toumans Mamihlapinatapai, 60cm x 17cm x 5cm, sheet iron/LED light, 1500000 toumans

Short biography: The artist has a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and shown his works in solo and group exhibitions around Iran and in London, Dubai, and the USA.

Description of artworks: The lion has come to be recognised as the King of the jungle, therefore in some way he is linked to Kings and Sultans. In truth, it so happens that in the same way that the lion reigns supreme over other animals, so a King reigns supreme over his people. The last Iranian lion was hunted some eight decades ago, however the essence of the lion remains to this day, ever present in the culture and beliefs of the Iranian people. In eastern culture, the bull symbolises the moon and the lion is a symbol of the sun. Just as the lion overcomes the bull, so it follows that the sun prevails over the moon, the day over night and light over darkness. With this work, the artist has tried to demonstrate such prevalence but this time we see the bull surmounting and hunting the lion. The image of the bull overcoming the lion, as engraved on the blow torch, is to illustrate all at once that everything has been reversed and to suggest the prospect of darkness triumphing over light. For his second piece, the artist was inspired by the poetry of Iranian poet Molana to create his artwork, which is engraving (ghalamzani) on an original helmet of an Iranian oil company.

List of artworks: 1. Lion and the Bull on blowtorch, 2013, 25cm x 12cm x 21cm, $3500 2. The Riders, 2013, 49cm x 27cm x 31cm, $4000

Short biography: The artist is an Iranian artist and photographer. He studied BA Photography at the University of Brighton and is currently finishing his MFA Public Art and New Artistic Strategies at Bauhaus University, Weimar. His work has been exhibited around Europe, and featured internationally in Photoworks, Elephant magazine, and Curator. He has also worked as an assistant for Magnum photographer Alessandra Sanguinetti. His practice had previously involved examining the possibility of transforming non-visual data (such as economic figures) into visual forms. In a conceptual and technical shift from this approach, more recently he uses staged imagery and is particularly interested in semi- autobiographical fiction with absurdist overtones.

Description of submitted work: “Blowback” looks back at the financial records of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now BP) prior to the nationalisation of the oil industry in Iran, which led to the overthrow of the government, coded Operation Ajax. The photographs demonstrate excited fluids under the effect of sound waves with particular frequencies. The figures used to generate the frequencies correspond to the company’s net profits, royalties to Iran and (if applicable) British taxes, in nine most critical years of the company’s forty-two year long activity in Iran prior to the nationalization. Accompanying the photographs are excerpts from declassified documents and found images related to the events immediately before and after Operation Ajax.

Short biography: The artists were both born and raised in Iran, and trained as architects. They moved to the UK seven years ago to complete a master’s degree in Emergent Technologies and Design. Four years later, they founded a multi- disciplinary architecture, design and research practice based in London. Islamic art and architecture, particularly of Iran, is predominantly characterised by complex geometries in patterns, ornaments and structures. The artists utilise these familiar geometrical elements and develop them further through a contemporary mode of design and fabrication. With this method, they are able to create artefacts that are simultaneously innovative and culturally rooted.
