S C 0 4 4 7 9 5 About the Exhibition Artists from around the world were invited, through a call for artists, to respond to the title of Perception in categories such as video, installation, multi-media, painting, textile, drawing, photography, and sculpture. Artworks must have been created by an Iranian artist or inspired by Iran. The Selection Process Our invited judges made their selections from over 200 submissions and the works with the most votes will be exhibited at Summerhall gallery, Edinburgh, during the festival week. There will be a jury prizewinner for most promising submission. Judges Janet Rady Based between London and the United Arab Emirates, gallery director and curator Ms Rady is a specialist in contemporary art from the Middle East, with over twenty five years’ experience of the international art market including leading auction houses and major commercial galleries. She holds a masters degree in Islamic Art History from the University of Melbourne, and is the hons lectures secretary for the Iran Society and a nominator for the Jameel Prize. She is a member of the Arab British Chamber of Commerce and sits on the Advisory Council of Caravan Arts. http://www.janetradyfineart.com/ Morteza Nematollahi Mr Nematollahi is a leading figure in contemporary art within Iran. Born in Isfahan, Iran, he studied sculpture at the School of Fine Arts in Isfahan and the University of Fine Arts in Tehran. One of his creations was the statue of Ostad Ali Akbar Isfahani who was the architect of Imam Square, Isfahan. He has participated in a number of biennials, group and solo exhibitions across Iran, and been part of numerous jury panels for exhibitions. Gohar Dashti Gohar Dashti holds a masters degree in photography from the Fine Art University, Tehran. She creates artwork using different media such as photography and video with references to history and culture in modern society. She has participated in art residencies and scholarships such as the DAAD award and her works have appeared in various exhibitions around the world such as the V&A in London, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. http://www.gohardashti.com/ Helia Darabi Ms Darabi is an art critic and freelance curator. She holds a masters degree in Art Studies from the University of Fine Arts, Tehran. She lectured at the Art University in Tehran and has worked as an editor for various art magazines such as Tandis. Her artworks have been shown at exhibitions around Iran and Turkey. Description of artworks: This collection is made up of paintings called The Veresk Bridge which is the artist’s perception of the events in World War II where the bridge was a route for the Russians and helped secure victories. He has shown his works in solo and group exhibitions around Iran. Description of submitted work: The artist has used elements more commonly used for road construction to create his artworks. This may cause the viewer to change its perception of what bitumen, crude oil, and tar can be used for. These materials are abundant in oil-rich countries like Iran. List of works: 1. Best known for his linear figurative paintings, he immigrated to America at thirteen. He has a bachelor’s in Fine Arts and also in Industrial Design. His linear figurative paintings are inspired in part by Persian calligraphy, tile works, and studies in quantum physics, revealing his reverence for such ideas as Unity and Monism. His paintings have been featured in more than sixty group shows across the globe, including Saatchi Gallery in London and Ex Aurum Museum in Pescara, Italy, in addition to solo exhibitions in New York, Boston, Amsterdam, Tehran and Esfahan Museum of Contemporary Art. Description of artworks: Value is a commodity that can be traded in and of itself by various perceptions of a population at any given moment in time and history. Inheritance is a single channel video projection addressing the seeming polarities between western ideas of modernization through industry and rise of capitalism, versus the skeletal foundation of an ancient eastern cultural legacy and its remaining traditions in the modern landscape of Iran. By examining the gradual movement and intersection of two still images, (one of an oil refinery under construction and the other of the great audience hall of Persepolis), Inheritance questions the rise or fall of these seeming polarities, allowing the answer to unfold in the ephemeral perception of the viewer and their individual observation of movement and meaning. Description of artworks: Cenapse is a series of audio/visual experiments based on the concept of removing all the narrative elements from the piece and using special audio-visual stimulations to create the same brain condition in the viewer as watching a dramatic narrative.     Entrance to Word into Art, Artists of the Modern Middle East with Iranian artist Parviz Tanavoli Heech in a Cage, 2006, bronze in foreground right Published online arteeast.org July 2006 WORD INTO ART: ARTISTS OF THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST AT THE BRITISH MUSEUM (MAY 18 – SEPTEMBER 2, 2006) is a major contribution to our perceptions of contemporary art in the Middle East. I attribute its engaging nature to a combination of aesthetic seduction, clear organization, and compelling subject matter. “Word into Art” is based on the premise of the vibrancy of the traditional art of Arabic calligraphy in the context of a sacred script, as well as the transformations of the script by individual artists as they intersect with international contemporary art trends, politics, and their own regional traditions. Word into Art consists primarily of contemporary works on paper and ceramics, as well as a few paintings, most of it collected by the British Museum since the 1980s. The show attracted a huge grant from Dubai Holding, enabling the museum to have an entire summer of Middle Eastern Programming, as well as an opening symposium that included artists and art historians from Palestine, Iran, Iraq, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. (1) Because of this funding the museum also commissioned major art works as part of the exhibition, including Blessed Tigris by Iraqi artist Dia al Azzawi, a towering sculpture in the entry of the Great Court of the Museum. The tower is inscribed with a painfully lyrical poem by Iraqi poet and journalist Muhammad Mahdi al Jawahiri who died in 1997.

This essay argues that the ethic of javanmardi demonstrates a high level of cultural continuity. The difficulty of defining this concept is partly resolved by relying on seminal texts from the medieval period and referring to important historical figures from early Iranian history. A taxonomy of types, the felon, the faithful and the fighter, are utilised in this article to provide a bricolage of characters who demonstrate that javanmardi is just as important in modern Iran as it was in medieval Persia.   • Contemporary Art in Ethnographic Museums
    Deconstructing the Dichotomy In 1985 the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam organized a symposium on a new and challenging theme, i.e. contemporary art from what were at the time referred to as developing countries. Throughout the course of a long day, directors and curators of leading ethnographic and art muse- ums in the Netherlands discussed the possibility of assembling a joint collection. The outcome was somewhat disappointing for the curators of the ethnographic Tropenmuseum; their presentations of current art pro- duction in Africa and Asia were met with skepticism and disdain. The representatives of the art museums concluded that the collecting of work from these regions ought to best be left to the ethnographic museums because such art did not fit the criteria employed in contem- porary art discourse.
