“I Believe that We Will Win!”: American Myth-Making and the World Cup A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Communication of the College of Arts and Sciences by Michael Burkel B.A. University of Cincinnati April 2015 Committee Chair: Eric Jenkins, Ph.D. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the pervasiveness of nationalistic rhetoric and narratives in soccer-related media. The rhetorical strategies used by commentators, analysts, and fans to fit the United States Men’s Nation Team into the myth of American Exceptionalism are analyzed. First, four broadcasted soccer matches in which the United States played Mexico are analyzed, along with the available prematch, halftime, and postmatch studio coverage, in order to explain the growth of an exceptionally American storyline known as the Dos a Cero myth. Afterward, an analysis of fan responses to World Cup-related threads on a popular social media site are analyzed for nationalistic rhetoric and narrative content. This thesis offers insight into the ubiquitous nature of the myth of American Exceptionalism, showing the tactics used by Americans to rhetorically twist the facts to fit their preferred reality of an America that always triumphs in the end. 3 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT: ……………………………………………………………………………………. 2 CHAPTER: I: INTRODUCTION: ……….…………………………………………………………… 5 II. Major League Soccer: Columbus Crew players from University ... http://www.ohio.com/cmlink/1.411481?print=1 Click to Print Major League Soccer: Columbus Crew players from University of Akron hear familiar voice of Caleb Porter Crew players pleased to get win, watch coach in pros By Michael Beaven Beacon Journal sports writer Published: July 7, 2013 - 11:37 PM COLUMBUS: The voice sounded familiar on the sideline, but on this day the constructive criticism wasn’t directed at Wil Trapp and Chad Barson. Trapp and Barson each heard coach Caleb Porter shouting instructions to his Portland Timbers players in his return to Ohio on a warm Sunday at Columbus Crew Stadium. Porter mentored Trapp and Barson at the University of Akron during a seven-year tenure at the school that ended in 2012. Barson played on Porter’s 2010 Zips team that won a national title and the 2009 team that was national runner-up. Championship memories remain in Porter and Barson’s thoughts, but on this sunny day in Columbus a Major League Soccer match was the focus. The match was spirited with 36 fouls called, and ended with Columbus a 1-0 winner. The Crew (6-8-5) utilized a revamped starting lineup and got a goal five minutes into the match before a crowd of 15,051. Midfielder Bernardo Anor scored the goal past Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts after a corner kick by forward Federico Higuain. The result ended the Timbers’ (7-2-9) unbeaten streak at 15. Trapp made his MLS debut Sunday as a starting midfielder after playing with the United States U-20 team in Turkey.
