Knowledge of the biogeographic distribution of ants is central to our understanding of ant ecology, evolution, taxonomy and conservation. Here, we introduce a novel global biogeographic database for ant genera and an associated website with maps showing the known distribution of all extant ant genera. We use this database to consider knowledge of the distribution of ant genera in Asia, a hotspot of ant diversity and biological diversity more generally. We find that, although ant systematists and ecologists are now active in Asia, much remains to be learned about the distribution of Asian ant genera. We highlight areas where additional research would be particularly useful. Here, we report the discovery of a new ant that appears to represent the sister lineage to all extant ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). The phylogenetic position of this cryptic predator from the soils of the Amazon rainforest was inferred from several nuclear genes, sequenced from a single leg. Martialis heureka (gen. et sp. nov.) also constitutes the sole representative of a new, morphologically distinct subfamily of ants, the Martialinae (subfam. nov.). Our analyses have reduced the likelihood of long-branch attraction artifacts that have trou- bled previous phylogenetic studies of early-diverging ants and therefore solidify the emerging view that the most basal extant ant lineages are cryptic, hypogaeic foragers. On the basis of morpho- logical and phylogenetic evidence we suggest that these special- EVOLUTION ized subterranean predators are the sole surviving representatives of a highly divergent lineage that arose near the dawn of ant diversification and have persisted in ecologically stable environ- ments like tropical soils over great spans of time.

Brandão AbsTracT The present catalogue lists the type specimes of 112 nominal “poneromorph” ant species housed in the Formicidae collection of the Hymenoptera laboratory, Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZSP). The catalogue includes types of Amblyoponinae, Ectatomminae, Heteroponerinae, Ponerinae, and Proceratiinae, that is, all poneromorph (sensu Bolton, 2003) but for the monotypic Paraponerinae, of which the collection bears no type specimens. We present here information on type categories (holotype, paratype, syntype, lectotype, and paralectotype), label data, nomenclatural changes since the original description and type specimens conservation status. Technol., Dec. 2005, 27(Suppl. 3) : 665-673 Canopy ants were examined in terms of a number of species and species composition between in high and low disturbance sites of lowland tropical rainforest at Ton Nga Chang Wildlife Sanctuary, Songkhla province, Thailand, from November 2001 to November 2002. A permanent plot of 100x100 m2 was set up and divided into 100 sub-units (10x10m2) on each study site. Pyrethroid fogging was two monthly applied to collect ants on three trees at random in a permanent plot. A total of 118 morphospecies in 29 genera belonging to six subfamilies were identified. The Formicinae subfamily found the highest species numbers (64 species) followed by Myrmicinae (32 species), Pseudomyrmecinae (10 species), Ponerinae (6 species), Dolichoderinae (5 species) and Aenictinae (1 species). Myrmicinae and Ponerinae showed a significant difference of mean species number between sites (P<0.05) while Formicinae and Myrmicinae also showed a significant difference of mean species number between months (P<0.05). Here, we compared a primary and a secondary forest each on two continents using four different sampling methods. Winkler sampling, pitfalls, and four types of above- and below-ground baits (dead, crushed insects; melezitose; living termites; living mealworms/grasshoppers) were applied on four plots (4 × 4 grid points) on each site. Although less diverse than Winkler samples and pitfalls, subterranean baits provided a remarkable ant community. Our baiting system provided a large dataset to systematically quantify strata and dietary specialisation in tropical rainforest ants. Compared to above-ground baits, 10–28% of the species at subterranean baits were overall more common (or unique to) below ground, indicating a fauna that was truly specialised to this stratum. Species turnover was particularly high in the primary forests, both concerning above-ground and subterranean baits and between grid points within a site. This suggests that secondary forests are more impoverished, especially concerning their subterranean fauna. Although subterranean ants rarely displayed specific preferences for a bait type, they were in general more specialised than above-ground ants; this was true for entire communities, but also for the same species if they foraged in both strata. Carebara abuhurayri Sharaf & Aldawood, 2011 is synonymized under Carebara arabica Collingwood & van Harten, 2001. Carebara arabica is redescribed and a Neotype is fixed based on a specimen collected from southwestern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A new species, C. fayrouzae sp. n. is described from Saudi Arabia based on queens, major and minor workers. Keys to major and minor workers of the two Arabian Carebara species are given. Madl* Abstract The ant collection of the Natural History Museum Vienna (Austria) contains syntypes of nine species described from Eritrea: Aphaenogaster clavata EMERY, 1877 (= Pheidole clavata (EMERY, 1877)), Cam- ponotus carbo EMERY, 1877, Melissotarsus beccarii EMERY, 1877, Monomorium bicolor EMERY, 1877, Pheidole rugaticeps EMERY, 1877, Pheidole speculifera EMERY, 1877, Polyrhachis antinorii EMERY, 1877 (= Polyrhachis viscosa SMITH, 1858) and Tetramorium doriae EMERY, 1881. All syntypes were collected in Eritrea except the syntype of Monomorium luteum EMERY, 1881, which was collected in Yemen. A prelimi- nary checklist of the ants of Eritrea comprises 114 species and subspecies of seven subfamilies. Zusammenfassung In der Ameisensammlung des Naturhistorischen Museums Wien (Österreich) werden Syntypen von neun Arten aufbewahrt, die aus Eritrea beschrieben worden sind: Aphaenogaster clavata EMERY, 1877 [= Phei- dole clavata (EMERY, 1877)], Camponotus carbo EMERY, 1877, Melissotarsus beccarii EMERY, 1877, Mono- morium bicolor EMERY, 1877, Pheidole rugaticeps EMERY, 1877, Pheidole speculifera EMERY, 1877, Poly- rhachis antinorii EMERY, 1877 (= Polyrhachis viscosa SMITH, 1858) und Tetramorium doriae EMERY, 1881. Alle Syntypen stammen aus Eritrea ausgenommen der Syntypus von Monomorium luteum EMERY, 1881, der in Jemen gesammelt wurde. Eine vorläufige Artenliste der Ameisen Eritreas umfasst 114 Arten und Unterarten aus sieben Unterfamilien.
