Bass, Dan Gapen Sr. 3 PREFACE Extensive research was required to compile the data contained in the Fishing Hot Spots “Fishing The Mississippi” book series. Factual information was gathered from publications of the Illinois Department of Conservation, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Information also was collected from the files of area fish managers, interviews with state and federal management personnel, interviews with area fishermen and from personal visitation to much of the Upper Mississippi River Valley. Great care was taken to ensure that you have the most up-to-date in­ formation. "Fishing The Mississippi” describes each pool and its fishery in detail. This book provides fishing insight on Pools 15, 16 and 17, a segment of the river covering 23,393 acres and stretching 56 miles from Rock Island to New Boston, Illinois. Although these pools are near large industrial cities, excellent fishing is available for largemouth bass, catfish and panfish. In addition, walleye and sauger action is sufficient to interest many anglers. Through the input of many guides and local fishermen. Fishing Hot Spots has pinpointed dozens of proven spots in each pool. The pools are so vast, however, there are many more sandbars, holes, sloughs and other features that could not be covered thoroughly. Due to constant current, many areas change from one year to the next. Perhaps this is the charm and challenge of the Mississippi River - there are always new fishing areas and patterns to discover. Information on each pool is presented in the standard Fishing Hot Spots outline form, enabling anglers to easily answer questions and to compare data from

Britton _________________________________ College of Graduate Studies The University of Toledo May 2009 An Abstract of Flies Only: Early Sport Fishing Conservation on Michigan’s Au Sable River Bryon Borgelt Submitted as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctoral of Philosophy in History The University of Toledo May 2009 This dissertation focuses on the earliest stage of fish conservation on the Au Sable River of Michigan. It begins with the popularization of the grayling fishery in the nation’s sporting journals, such as Forest and Stream and Scribner’s Monthly where Thad Norris and others wrote of the adventure and abundance of fly fishing on the Au Sable. By the 1890s the grayling were all but gone due in part to over fishing, commercial lumbering and the introduction of non-native brook trout. Despite the absence of the grayling, a sustainable sport fishing industry had risen from the ashes of the cut over lands of the Michigan High Plains. Early sport fishers had recognized man’s role in the loss of grayling and began their own versions of fish and stream conservation centered in the towns of Grayling and Lovells. Early fish conservation looked directly at protecting the resource itself, and not the modern holistic approach that encompasses the entire ecosystem. The first focus was to create state laws that closed seasons and promoted more sporting methods of capture such as the use of a hook and line.

    Grover Cox and Cox’s Sporting Goods by Ron Gast The group stood over the pile of fresh caught fish. All were starting to feel tired after a night of fishing in Tampa Bay. The clean clothes they had just put on did not do a lot to help relieve their fatigue. “Well, the snook really like that minnow Grover,” Mr. King said to Mr. Cox. “I have never seen them go after one like that before,” he said. “Yeah, I’m really pleased with it. It has the action they can’t resist,” Grover said turning to Mr. King. “I see the photographer is here so let’s go ahead and get behind these fish so he can take some pictures. This will make some great publicity for my new minnows. Oh, one of you boys go ahead and dangle one of my minnows in front of us over the fish. That’ll be a nice touch” Such are the visions one conjures up in seeing the old photograph postcard of Grover Cox and his fish. We’ll never know how the scene actually came about, but it’s fun to imagine. One thing we do know is that Grover Cox has the privilege and honor of being the first Floridian to make a commercially available wooden fishing lure. This fact has made his lures some of the most desirable ones for collectors. The Tampa Minnows are well constructed and have hardware suitable for catching large fish. His lures were made in a time when the fishing tackle businesses were taking off.
