The Effects of Hip-Hop and Rap on Young Women in Academia by Sandra C Zichermann A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education Sociology in Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Sandra C Zichermann 2013 The Effects of Hip-Hop and Rap on Young Women in Academia Sandra C Zichermann Doctor of Education Sociology in Education University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This thesis investigates the rise of the cultures and music of hip-hop and rap in the West and its effects on its female listeners and fans, especially those in academia. The thesis consists of two parts. First I conducted a content analysis of 95 lyrics from the book, Hip-Hop & Rap: Complete Lyrics for 175 Songs (Spence, 2003). The songs I analyzed were performed by male artists whose lyrics repeated misogynist and sexist messages. Second, I conducted a focus group with young female university students who self-identify as fans of hip-hop and/or rap music. In consultation with my former thesis supervisor, I selected women enrolled in interdisciplinary programmes focused on gender and race because they are equipped with an academic understanding of the potential damage or negative effects of anti-female or negative political messaging in popular music. My study suggests that the impact of hip-hop and rap music on young women is both positive and negative, creating an overarching feeling of complexity for some young female listeners who enjoy music that is infused with some lyrical messages they revile.

  • The Lost Boyz Drop 'Forever' 5-31-05
The Lost Boyz Drop 'Forever' 5-31-05 Written by Robert ID997 Friday, 11 March 2005 07:23 - The Lost Boyz, the Queens, N.Y.- based rap crew that brought us such smash singles as "Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimas and Benz," "Lifestyles of the Rich and Shameless," "Music Makes Me High" and "Renee,"as well as two gold certified albums, 1996's ''Legal Drug Money'' and 1997's ''Love Peace And Nappiness'', are set to release ''Forever'' on May 31. Inspiration struck Mr. Cheeks when he was looking through some photographs. As he flipped through some older shots, Cheeks came across a photo that showed him with the rest of the Lost Boyz crew that also included Freaky Tah, Spigg Nice and Pretty Lou. But since the photo had been taken, Freaky Tah had been murdered and Spigg Nice had been incarcerated. As Mr. Cheeks looked at the picture, he noticed that the photographer had written "Lost Boyz Forever" on the print. Mr. Cheeks now had the title of his upcoming Lost Boyz album. "It was time for me to put some LB stuff out there," says Mr. Cheeks, the group's lead vocalist and creative force. "There were a lot of things that people haven''t heard from our crew. Before Spiggy went in, he did some joints that we wanted to put out. There were some joints that Tah was on and we didn''t get a chance to release them before, so we freshened them up, crispened them up and got them in the Lost Boyz tradition.

‘Keep scopin til you hear me, words is spoken clearly’ Hip-hop music and the art of exclusion Dave Peplow University of Nottingham Abstract In the last twenty years hip-hop culture has been fairly extensively researched within academia. However, relatively little work has considered, in detail, the language of rap lyrics. Approaching the lyrics of a hip-hop track from a stylistic perspective and employing cognitive linguistic frameworks, this article has two primary aims: firstly, to stimulate further discussion of the rich linguistic texture inherent to the genre and secondly to consider how these lyrics problematise simplistic notions of belonging and identity in hip-hop culture. I consider a number of different raps, but particularly focus on a track by Rakim, one of the most revered MCs in hip-hop history. Key words: African-American culture, cognitive poetics, conceptual metaphor, deictic shift theory, hip-hop music, modernity, postmodernism, Rakim. 1. Introduction Most people today, they can’t even define in words, hip-hop. They don’t know the whole culture behind it. – Afrika Bambaataa (George 2004: 46) It is unfortunate yet predictable that academic research into hip-hop culture tends to start on the defensive. Tackling such a controversial area of popular culture requires some justification. Hip-hop culture, and in particular the lyrics of rap music, have been widely condemned for its promotion of violence, misogyny, and racism. This condemnation has come from the African American community as well as from outside. In 1996 Joseph Lowery, the former leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, argued that the civil rights movement had lost its way in more recent times and had sacrificed its respectability and moral conscience (Perry 2004: 4).
