Biographical/Historical note Madeleine Lindsey Green was born in 1943 and lived in Alexandria, Virginia throughout her life. She worked for the federal government, serving 24 years with the Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Water Monitoring, though her passion was for family and history, which led her to the hobby of genealogy. Madeline frequented the Library of Congress, the Orange County Virginia African-American Historical Society, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York. Madeline’s research led to her ancestors’ names being included and engraved on the Spirit of Freedom, African-American Civil War Memorial in Washington, D.C. She was also responsible for her ancestor’s names being included and read off at the annual Slave Memorial Wreath Laying Ceremony at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate. She died in Washington, D.C. in 2012. Scope and Contents note The Madeline Lindsey Green Family Research Papers span the 1600s through 1999 and document Green's genalogical research into her own family, as well as the families of others. Research materials include photocopies of legal documents, wills, birth records, death records, registers of freed persons and slaves, censuses, wills, and other genealogical documents from Virginia, North Carolina, Pennnsylvania, and Washington, D.C. Families include Green's own relatives, the Quander family, whose lineage can be traced to Africans in America during the eighteenth century. Other familes Green researched include the McIntosh, Whistle, Ross, Madella, and Taylor families. Audiovisual materials include videotapes of a History Channel recording on Union Soldiers for the McIntosh family, as well as other family photographs and videos from the McIntosh family.
