I have to say I did enjoy a decent hot summer. How long ago was it when we had one like that? Dare I say we really need a proper cold winter as well. We need to get rid of those horrible bugs that like ambient, grotty, damp, luke warm weather. The new format of the Parish News appears to be working in that we have increased the size by another page this year. With the aid of Chris Bryant and his extensive village records, I have started a history page giving some idea of what news there was in the parish mag over 25 years ago. Did you recognise any of the names? I did and I have only lived in the village 7 years (and I cannot believe that number either!) There have been some very successful events this year: parish breakfasts, a quiz, the Open Gardens, Soulfest, Bonfire night and, of course, our tribute to‘The Battle’s Over’. The organisers of these events have surpassed themselves again. During the Open Gardens I asked everyone who attended mine to complete my visitors book. Apart from the lovely comments it also showed that most of the visitors did not live in the village. I will let you ruminate over that one! Again, I would like to thank everyone for supporting the Parish News - those who write, advertise and deliver. Without this merry band of supporters your Parish News would not arrive on your doorstep each month. Finally, I would like to wish you all a happy time over the festive period and hope Santa comes up with some lovely surprises. I don't know about you but do you feel the adverts have been really low key on the subject this year? I don't think I've actually heard a Carol or even a 'secular' seasonal song yet - they usually seem to appear very early September and become relentless by the last few days before the great day itself. One thing that hasn't been overlooked this year is the centenary of the end of WWI on 11/11/2018. We marked it variously by our usual services in Church and at memorials, by eating together, lighting millennium beacons, displays and exhibitions as well as glorious bell ringing right throughout the country. The question which arises, of course, is to how we will mark the day as time moves on and what the emphasis should be from now on. It seems this is a year destined to be one of change and development as well as commemoration - what of 2019? And what of (dare one say it?!) Brexit and its various incarnations? For those of us who believe the one still, solid point in all these matters is the birth of Jesus at Christmas and the comfort and the challenge that His incarnations represent. Once again, happy Christmas and a positive new year to you all. God Bless. Revd. It is really surprising the varying topics we cover in our hour and a half together, we all learn something new every day. This month we are looking forward to our Christmas meal, so spare a thought for our wastelines.. Millennium Green News This past month has seen a massive effort being made by the Community Team to clear brambles and blackthorn from the green. In particular, in the annexe area and also higher up the green to the left of the meadow. This is being done to reclaim a lot of the land in the meadow and to turn the annexe area into a place of peace and quiet. We are taking this opportunity to clear and reinstate the original drainage ditches. I would warn all walkers that while work is in progress some root stocks still remain and could be a trip hazard, so please be aware and be careful! www.soulburymillenniumgreen.co.uk Christmas Singalong In the parish hall on 1st December - get your friends together and book a table. £15.00 per person. Call Alan on 01296 270213 to book. Choice of fish and chips or chicken and chips. Don’t forget to bring your own drinks and glasses. Parish Council News The meeting of Soulbury Parish Council took place on Monday 19 November 2018. There were 8 members of the public present. Apologies received from Chairman Victor Wright so Cllr Cross took the chair. Apologies also from Cllr Ian Culley and Cllr Janet Blake. Minutes of Parish Council meeting on Monday 15 October 2018 were approved. Cllr Stevens raised the issue of the change of boundary proposed by Great Brickhill PC and that AVDC are doing nothing about it but will talk to the 3 residents in Ivy Lane. Various accounts were paid. Planning: 18/03621: change of lean-to to office. No objection but comment to be made about insisting it is used by homeowners and not a commercial let. 18/04056: Alterations to15/00658, approved application, concerning entrance and barn. Need more detail. Two planning appeals: 50 houses, public enquiry, Paul Newman homes and indoor equestrian schooling area, Hollingdon Farm. Children’s play area: nothing to raise. Grass cutting: fi nished for the year. Church looked good for Remembrance. AVDC/BCC: Cllr Neil Blake advised of 4 public consultations: Annual Budget, Social Care closes 10 Dec, Early Help revue closes 13 Dec and School Transport changes closes 4 January 2019. Cllr Blake also advised that Bucks will be a single unitary council to be known as Bucks County District Council. Not what the present council feels is the correct thing to do. Number of councillors will be reduced, not sure the new arrangement will cope when the anticipated growth in people in the area is expected to go from 600K to 800K. Lots of discussion taking place. Parish hall: nothing to raise. Soulbury Millennium Green: going well, headless deer being repaired.

Mr Hanley was also kind enough to make a number of valuable suggestions on the first draft of the introduction which also benefited from the ideas (albeit on their part unknowingly) of Dr J. Broad of the North East London Polytechnic and Dr D. R. Mills of the Open University whose lectures on Bucks village society at Stowe School in April 1982 proved immensely illuminating. None of the above, of course, bear any responsibility for any errors of interpretation on my part.
