Secondary Sources About Elizabeth Cummins PREFACE Scope and Purpose This Judith Merril bibliography includes both primary and secondary works, arranged in categories that are suitable for her career and that are, generally, common to the other bibliographies in the Center for Bibliographic Studies in Science Fiction. Works by Merril include a variety of types and modes—pieces she wrote at Morris High School in the Bronx, newsletters and fanzines she edited; sports, westerns, and detective fiction and non-fiction published in pulp magazines up to 1950; science fiction stories, novellas, and novels; book reviews; critical essays; edited anthologies; and both audio and video recordings of her fiction and non-fiction. Works about Merill cover over six decades, beginning shortly after her first science fiction story appeared (1948) and continuing after her death (1997), and in several modes— biography, news, critical commentary, tribute, visual and audio records. This new online bibliography updates and expands the primary bibliography I published in 2001 (Elizabeth Cummins, “Bibliography of Works by Judith Merril,” Extrapolation, vol. 42, 2001). It also adds a secondary bibliography. However, the reasons for producing a research- based Merril bibliography have been the same for both publications. Published bibliographies of Merril’s work have been incomplete and often inaccurate. -

Outside SAPS it will have to serve as a letter-sub stitute to the several people to whom I owe letters that will most probably never -hear from me otherwise, A very flattering picture of yours truly in a "beat" mood adorns the cover of this issued In the first place, I don't have that much hair any more. In the second place, I've shaved off the beard. I kept the mustache, and at least of this writing have started on the second attempt at a beard. The one you see ■'m the cover was three weeks old, and a real beaut, but I thought I'd look a little more normal without it, and as I had to impress the finance company as to what a respectable type person I was, in order to get a car, I shaved it Off. Much to my.sorrow. The picture was drawn by Shirley Porzio, my bongo instructor, P.Si, I also gave up the bongos. Beards are funny things, I'd just reached the point where everyone at work was resigned to the point of fact that I was going to wear it regardless of what they thought, when I shaved it off, and I've got that whole bit to play over again. -

TEACHING PULP MAGAZINE WRITING Science fiction classes in colleges throughout the nation have become common place today. Estimates place their numbers at in excess of 500, and there are universities and colleges abroad which also have such courses. The first such course in history -was taught by myself at City College of New York, and ran from 1953 through 1955. I was listed as a member of the faculty and received compensa tion from the college based on the number of students in the class. Guest lec turers included Robert A. Heinlein, John W. Campbell, Isaac Asimov, Lester del Rey, Robert Sheckley and others. I gave it up when an editorial position at Quick Fro zen Foods magazine required that my evenings be available for special assignments. I plan to do a special article on that pioneering course sometime in the future. I mention it because some regard genre writing instruction as novel. While no earlier course on science fiction is known, there were special courses at New York University in 1942 on various specialist pulp categories. Marie Rodell taught a professional course on the Detective Story and Willard Crosby on the Action Story. These were part of a group of professional short story writing classes, headed by William Byron Mowery, well-known in the twenties and thirties for his action pulp adventures. -

Cover design and illustration is one of the most important considerations in marketing and selling print publications. As with other types of product packaging, the cover attracts the prospective buyer, inviting a closer look at the book and encouraging its purchase. Mass market paperbacks were produced using cheap wood pulp paper (hence the term “pulp fiction”). Due to their inexpensive cost and low-quality paper, these books were regarded as disposable. Their ephemeral nature may explain in part why cover illustrators were uncredited, at least in the early days, and remain relatively unknown. These days, however, the pop culture appeal of vintage cover art has contributed significantly to the growth of the field of paperback collecting and to increased recognition of many formerly anonymous artists. In the post-WWII era, the design of a book cover was typically overseen by an art director, who would commission an illustration from a freelance commercial artist. For genre fiction, the illustration usually consisted of a single scene based on the plot and setting of the story, painted in a vividly-colored, soft-edged, realistic style. -

As a collector, over the years I have ended up with many duplicates, and would like to trade for issues that I do not have. To keep it fair, I would prefer to trade 1950s for 1950s and 1960s for 1960s, but 1970s to current are okay to consider. I need quite a few from the 1950s and 1960s, and would like to fill in the missing issues. After the 1970s, I would just as soon swap for 1980s or 1990s, or even 2005 issues, so here’s your chance to pick up some 35 year old magazines. Sigma March 2021 Page 1 February 2021 Meeting Minutes — Bill Hall - Parsec Secretary For once (thanks in part to a helpful e-mail from Kevin Hayes) I was early and got to chat awhile with Nils Hammer, making his first meeting appearance in a long time. This Zoom session grew steadily to a headcount of 21 (though never all at once), making it very competitive with our last physical meetings, although we did benefit from attendees in, say, California or West Virginia. I clarified “I’m not a cat,” but that mercurial meme may have been dying on the proverbial vine even as I invoked it. John Thompson reported that Triangulation, devoted to “Habitats” this time, is shaping up, and Patrick Ropp confirmed that Alpha will soon hold its 19th annual workshop. Vice-President Karen reminds us that we can still contribute up to 3500 words to the Parsec short story contest, this year’s theme being “Still Waters, Deep Thoughts,” by April 15. Some of Mary Soon Lee’s poems are up for Rhysling nominations. Also, it sounds like Kirsten Wright is working You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato. on a detective novella. Oh, and it turns out we have a YouTube channel, just type in “Confluence-SFF” and over forty —Scrooge to Marley videos are there. Life could be a dream, sweetheart (Do-roo-do-do, sh-boom) After discussion, it was decided because of the lingering coronavirus and an exorbitant covid clean-up fee at Dormont — The Chords park there will not be a Parsec picnic this year. -

Fafnir – Nordic Journal of Science Fiction and Fantasy Research journal.finfar.org San Diego State University’s Speculative Fiction Collections: A Growing Center for the Study of Popular Culture Pamela A. Jackson Keywords: Speculative Fiction, Science Fiction, Comic Arts, Special Collections, Libraries SDSU’s Special Collections & University Archives is home to all things rare, unique, fragile or valuable in the library: approximately 80,000 rare books, over 500 archival/manuscript collections, and well over half a million pieces of ephemera. The collection’s strengths include historic astronomy, history of printing and graphic design, fine press and artist’s books, children’s books, science fiction and fantasy, horror, surfing, comics and zines, and alternative religious movements. Archival and manuscript collection strengths include local history, civil rights, performing arts, identity politics, and women’s studies. Some of the rarest items in the collection include a first edition (including papal marginalia) of Nicolaus Copernicus’s De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium (1543) which models a sun-centered universe, and a rare fourth printing of Heinrich Institoris’s Malleus Maleficarum (1494), which offered a step-by-step guide to interrogating and prosecuting suspected witches. SDSU’s ever-growing speculative fiction collections are a major source for research in science fiction, proto-SF, utopian and dystopian fiction, alternate histories, fantasy, horror, Gothic literature, weird tales, and the comic arts. Related holdings in pseudoscience, the occult, UFOs, and alternative religious movements support diverse inquiries into imagined or invented realities (Culbertson 1). Elizabeth Chater Science Fiction and Manuscript Collections Elizabeth Chater was the author of more than 24 novels and numerous short stories in the genres of science fiction, horror, mystery, and historical fiction and romance.
